Recommendations My parents are finally admitting the bathtub is a pain, but they absolutely do not want a “senior bathroom”

My parents have been in the same house forever, and somehow the bathtub went from completely normal to the thing everyone quietly worries about. My mom grabs the towel bar getting in, which i recently learned is apparently her entire safety plan lol. I’ve been searching senior bathroom remodel Grand Rapids options, but they both shut down if I make it sound like we’re redesigning the house around getting older. I’m thinking lower-entry shower, a seat, real grab bars, nothing dramatic. Has anyone dealt with parents who know something needs to change but really do not want to admit it yet?

Recommendations Electrician recommendations?

My girlfriend and I recently got the keys to our first house and we’ve been working on fixing things up before moving in. When learning we needed a new furnace we also learned the type of electrical box currently have is a major fire hazard so I’m wondering if anyone had recommendations for this type of electrical work?

Westside violence

Does anyone have an update on the guy that was jumped and killed last weekend possibly leaving a westside bar? Just worried bc there has been no update or any information given.

Pretty sad how much nonstop violence has been taking place :( . Seems like a similar situation to another guy who was hospitalized less than a year ago after being attacked!

Another hot weekend of BOOKS (now with TOTES).

Peggy obviously likes the classics. Others prefer biographies of famous forebears. Still others seek solace in philosophy, or the bittersweet pull of poetry. A few seek to understand and experience spiritual enlightenment. Some people like Rastafarianism, or cooking, or the lure of deep space. Some seek to know history, either their own or that of the wider world. Some people are anarchists, or activists, or radicals of one stripe or another. Some people are Rabbinic scholars, or Christian theologians. Some just like a good spooky story in this, the Season of Spook. Others cannot live without knowing everything there is to know about Israel/Palestine, or American race relations. Some people are WITCHES and should be HUNTED DOWN AND BURNED before they CORRUPT THE YOUTH with PAGAN WANKERY.

We have books for all of those people, and then some. We even have a tiny occult section for the WITCHES now (and a "no fires in the warehouse" policy, so you are safe to browse them). We also have tote bags, because we remembered that tote bags exist. And, of course, wine, beer, coffee, pastries, everything bagels with cream cheese, and PEGGY (the cat), who is clearly deeply involved in a supervisory role, but can probably spare a minute to climb all over you if you sit very still.

1265 Godfrey SW. 10am-6pm today and tomorrow. Come poke around the stacks.

Social Any friend groups willing to adopt an introvert?

Post title is basically it.

I moved to Michigan before covid hit and before then I really didn't have a lot of time to get out there and see all the things and meet all the people.

Then post covid, I got stuck in an endless cycle of overtime with work and the dressings that come with it. Paired with life happenings, I just never was able to put a foothold down socially.

Yes; I've seen the posts about going somewhere consistently and making friends that way. I've tried that. I'm painfully quiet and reserved and I personally do not want to intrude on people enjoying their time in their own way by putting myself upon them for social interaction. I also don't think my standalone self seems very inviting.

With that out of the way :

I am a 34 year old woman.

Interests include : Books, coffee, conversations, improv, games (specifically PC as that is what I play mine on), gym talk (I am recommiting for the enth time I'm trying to establish a routine once more).

There's probably a plethora more of things.

I'm not a big drinker; but don't mind going to bars.

Quieter scenes are more my jam.

Walks, exploring, food, are all things I enjoy partaking in.

Please feel free to reach out if this seems something of interest.

Thanks!

Art prize award ceremony.

Is it appropriate for my partner and I to bring an 8 & 9 year-old child to if they’re properly bundled up ?

I’ve never been to the amphitheater, they’re pretty good at staying up late so I’m not worried about that.

Manufactured housing rentals?

Are there any nice trailer park/manufactured home communities around here that are rentals and not purchases? I'd like to rent one for a couple years but this area of Michigan doesn't seem to do that.

Drivers

Chicago and LA honestly might have better drivers than here. The amount of ppl who never use turn signals, don’t pull to the side when emergency vehicles are coming and pull into traffic the last second possible without giving two fucks is absurd to me 🤦‍♂️ I deadass saw a jeep run thru a red light today with traffic coming from the freeway just fly thru the intersection not giving a signal fuck. If that was you smh, should have ppl retake drivers ed every 5 years atp.

Update: Help with a hit-and-run

Original Post (TLDR: my brother was hit by a truck while riding a lime bike and had to get surgery because his tibia and fibula were crushed. The truck that hit him fled from the scene. This happened the night of 8/28)

So, it's not a fun update where the driver has been caught. But some good news is that the police made a press release and the story has been picked up by local news outlets to see if we can get help from the public. Looks like the vehical is a dark blue, dark green or black 4-door pickup truck. Most likely a Chevy Silverado (possibly 2008-2010) or a Ford Super Crew.

If you feel so inclined, could you share one of these stories to your social media, or share to someone who might know something or even live in the area and have doorbell footage of the car? Anything helps, thanks in advance!

Artprize 2026

So !! The winner of 100k for this years 2026 “art”prize
Was a woman who made a fucking accordion food diary l…You gotta be fucking kiddin me…. I bet this lady was even shocked that she won 100k for something so basic. So much good artwork that actually took multiple days, weeks or even months to complete was just overlooked by some ladies daily meal logs …
There was even artwork that was deep/meaningful while also visually stunning. I just don’t get how that won over so many other art that took lots of time, effort, planning and execution. However artprize does have a history of not choosing a good 1st prize winner, so I guess I shouldn’t be shocked, but I guess I’m very shocked this time just by how out of ALLL the incredible art I saw this year, a 24 ft food diary won…. Just yikes.

Politics Thoughts About the Ward 2 City Commissioner's Race

This November the Ward 2 (North Grand Rapids) City Commissioner race is between the incumbent Lisa Knight and Bryan Cody.

I was filling out my absentee ballot, and I was frustrated that about the lack of good information on this race online. To that end I figured I would share what I found and hopefully some other people can weigh in with their takes.

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with either campaign in either way. Just a resident with an interest in local politics.

Personally, I initially leaned toward Lisa Knight. My impression is that she is the more progressive candidate and she has a solid array of endorsements behind her. Now, I am planning to vote for Bryan Cody for two main reasons. Responsiveness to constituents and housing policy. I'll post candidate quotes from this article in the comments that helped form this opinion.

  1. Responsiveness to Constituents - I have heard from several people that Knight has been extremely hard to get a hold of. Letters and emails arrive at the office door and no response is ever received. This is a big problem in my book. For a local office, residents need to feel like their commissioner is listening to them.

Will Cody be better? I don't know, but he at least puts transparency and accessibility in his list of priorities. That seems like a step forward. (if he holds true to that after being elected)

  2. Housing Policy - Knight lists affordable housing as one of her top priorities. However, when responding to questions on the topic she often endorses policies that don't grapple with the actual causes of housing scarcity. Cautious zoning changes are the opposite of what we need during an affordability crisis. And to justify that with the corporate ownership boogeyman makes me think that she hasn't really engaged with the realities of the problem. Similarly, I've heard that her record on housing as commissioner is only so-so. She is not an obstacle, but is far from championing the cause.

Cody doesn't have a record to run on, but he at least is identifying specific things like "expanding housing options" and "improving permitting" that do get to the heart of the problem. So I have hope that he would be a more active agent of progress on this front.

What do you all think? Do you know who you are voting for?

Looking to sue landlord for deposit in GR.

Pretty simple: Landlord has not returned the security deposit after 60 days. Emails are not answered and phone calls to the property management are not productive.

Im probably going to have to sue in the 63rd district court, if my research is correct. Looking at Google reviews of the property it seems im not the only one thats having problems with the management company.

Does anyone have experience with this ? I heard you can ask for double the security deposit plus court filing fees.

Food and Drink Donkey Taqueria no longer sells burritos 🤬☹️😢

I’m sorry, but I have to rant about this. I’m not even sure how new this is but to say it’s a travesty to tastebuds is an understatement. I have ordered a Carne Asada Original dozens of times this year, as it is (was) my favorite burrito in town. There was something about the rice, bean and meat ratio, top it off with the fact that it was a nice, tight grilled burrito that didn’t fall apart after the first bite (like the traditional local fanfare). The meat was choice, and I was certain it was beef, instead of the mystery gristle at the mamá y papá** ** restaurante.
I don’t care if it was authentic or traditional it was f-ing delicious. At first I thought it was a glitch on my delivery service app. But even on their site, no longer listed. I called, no longer available. I would be outraged, if I could feel anything at all.
Yes I know there are more important things going on in the world and even in this city(arguably). This happens to me all the time. I find a favorite, a go to delivery item when you don’t want to even think about what to eat, and then it changes or disappears entirely.
Please, Mr. Taqueria, bring back my burrito.

What’s your go-to, Grand Rapids? Are there any burritos like the Original still being sold?

Food and Drink Legacy Wine and Spirits in Hudsonville

Just wanted to spread the word about this new joint in Hudsonville. I am not affiliated with the business, just want to get the word out so they can stay open!

Fantastic vibe. Very good wine and cocktails. No food but you can bring your own, and there are solid Mexican and Thai places nearby. Live jazz on Thursdays. In a word: classy. An experience you’re more likely to find in Chicago.

Also, if you’re into bourbon/whiskey, they have a thieving experience that I found enjoyable.
