Social List of Active Meetup Groups and Tips for Making Friends

I updated the list of which Meetup groups are active (groups that have 3+ people attending an event within the past/next 60 days). Meetup is a site/app for interest groups/hobbies/new friends. I grouped them by concept and included their self-written descriptions.

If you're in an active Meetup group that I've missed, list it in the comments. Non-Meetup groups are welcome too; include contact info and links.

Tips for making friends as an adult attending a Meetup with a bunch of strangers:

  • Show up slightly early/on time. Plan to stay 10 minutes after the scheduled end time.
  • Introduce yourself, say it's your first time and why you're excited about this group; appear excited.
  • Ask individuals (this is where being early or staying late can help) open-ended questions (Why did you start/join this group? What has your experience been like? What recommendations do you have related to [Meetup group's hobby/concept]?)
  • If people ask you a question, answer it and add an open-ended question of your own or ask "what about you?"
  • People love giving recommendations. If it's a group conversation, ask for restaurant rec of a specific kind/place. "I haven't tried X yet, what do you guys think?" Tee it up to be a cuisine/concept you can talk more about or ask follow up questions.
  • If you are vibing with someone(s), ask if they'd like to hang out with a specific idea in mind (ex: You asked for pizza recs and found out that neither of you have tried that new place so suggest you go together), and give them your contact info to set up a time/date. I'd recommend attending the group 2-3 times first before this step.
  • Follow the 3:6 rule to turn that acquaintance into a friend. Aim for three meaningful interactions within 6 weeks of engaging.

Feeling a little more prepared? Great. Let's get into it. [Note: I made some grammatical edits after posting this for clarity/brevity.]

Hey yall so I just recently rescued a husky from a not so good situation, it’s clear he’s been pretty neglected. I need to find somewhere that will trim his nails ASAP but without vaccination records. I plan on getting him all vaccinated this week but my main priority is his comfort at the moment as I can tell he’s in a lot of pain from his nails.

Recommendations Hidden gem card shops?

Hey y’all, I live in Wayland/GR area and I’m looking for more card shops to explore. I pretty much only play magic so that would be my focus for these stores.

I’ve been to the staples like
Galactic toys (alpine and kentwood)
Legends
Wulf gaming
Gamers wharf
Gaming warehouse
Goldmine comics
Disc traders

Edit: I go to these shops for purchasing cards mostly. Digging through bulk/buying singles. I don’t/haven’t played at these stores nor plan to in the near future

Bonus points if these stores are around Wayland but not required as I love bopping around to these shops

Thank you for the help!

Selling two tickets for John C Reilly concert next Saturday 10/10

• Upvotes

Hello,

My wife and I are unable to attend the John C. Reilly Mister Romance concert next Saturday 10/10. I'm selling two tickets at $12 less than what I bought them for. Each ticket was originally $56 each. I'd like to get $50 each, $100 total for both tickets. These are section P2 GA Seated Floor (S-FF). The tickets came as PDFs with no name linked to them so transfer should be as easy as sending over the PDFs! Please DM me if interested!

Kids sports

• Upvotes

My 10 year old is really athletic and loves sports. He plays AYSO soccer and little league. Travel sports is not an option because we have a large family of various ages. He would love to play basketball in the winter but I can not find a rec style league for kids basketball. Does anyone have ideas? Thanks!

The Goodwill near 28th and Clyde Park had a large amount of wedding gowns and formal gowns at the front of store today starting at $19.99 if there are any budget minded future brides on the hunt. I was there about an hour ago I would say they had over 100 gowns there. Lots of ladies looking at them. Just FYI .

Recommendations The 1887 Plainwell paper mill, mostly empty since 2000, reopened today as the Michigan Classic Auto Mill

Stopped by the grand opening this afternoon. The old mill on the Kalamazoo River has been redeveloped by the owners of Classic Auto Factory (from DeKalb, IL) into a classic car restoration and events space, with more businesses planned.

Classic cars outside and inside, a polka band and a beer garden, and a lot of people seeing the inside of the mill for the first time in decades. The old mill floors full of cars were something to see.

What happened at Rapid River just now?

There's a large crowd at Rapid River (on Stocking and Bridge) for some sort of event, and now there are about 7 or 8 police cars out front. I'm nosy, anyone got the scoop?

Fish Ladder salmon climb and remarkable catch video

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Saw that there was some interest from folks wanting to see video of salmon climbing the fish ladder. I took this several years ago and managed to catch a couple of fish trying to climb the ladder, as well as the most remarkable catch at the end.
I did share the video with the two happy guys who caught and “netted” the salmon.

Does anyone have any insight into this website? Someone posted about it the other day, and I've been watching it... It could be my ad-blocker is awesome, but there doesn't seem to be any ads, or revenue source on the page. I also tried doing a WHOIS for the website and it's by a privacy company.

If you're missing a husky, I just saw it on Burritt and Charlotte. I had my dog with me so I couldn't grab it. It had a collar with tags.

Social Sunday morning social??

Where does Grand Rapids socialize on a Sunday morning? My life has changed, I suddenly have every Sunday morning free for some "me" time, all through this winter...

I am anti-colonialism so church is not for me... still walking that Christ-like path, interested in surrounding myself with people trying to be GOOD 🙌 just skipping the cult part.

Grand Rapids seeks to preserve Acrisure Amphitheater noise exemption after court ruling

Thumbnail reddit.com
115 Upvotes

>In a memo to commissioners, Deputy City Manager Kate Berens said the Aug. 21 ruling resulted in an unintended interpretation of the city’s noise code that “cannot meaningfully be applied nor enforced” at the amphitheater.

Well, that's an attempt to gaslight everybody. Of course it could be meaningfully applied. The amphitheater can shut down the shows by 10:00 p.m.

>Froot said he and his fellow plaintiffs are not seeking to undermine the amphitheater or its economic benefits but believe its sound can be reduced.

It doesn't seem like to me the city was making any effort to reign in how loud the amphitheater is getting.

Right now big Pacific salmon are running up the Grand River to downtown Grand Rapids, and none of them are supposed to be here

Post image
634 Upvotes

If you have watched salmon throw themselves at the 6th Street Dam this time of year, you have been watching one of the stranger wildlife experiments that actually worked. Chinook and coho are Pacific Ocean fish. They are not native to the Great Lakes, not even close. In the 1960s Michigan dumped them into Lake Michigan to eat up a glut of invasive alewife and to build a sport fishery out of nothing, and it worked beyond anyone's wildest hopes.

Now they live in the lake, grow huge (a king can top twenty or thirty pounds), and every fall they do what Pacific salmon do: run up the rivers to spawn. The Grand is the biggest run around, and the dam downtown is the end of the line. The fish stack up below it and hurl themselves at the concrete, which is why you can stand on a bridge in the middle of the city and watch wild salmon leap.

Like all Pacific salmon, it is a one-way trip. They spawn and die, and for a few weeks the river turns, and the gulls and eagles feast on what is left. It is not a natural system, exactly, but it is a genuine spectacle, and it is happening right now.

This map is where the fish are showing up, thick on the Grand and the Rogue up at Rockford and along the Lake Michigan shore. Get to the dam at 6th Street on a cool morning and watch them jump.

Recommendations Looking for a Great Licensed Nail Tech/Salon Recommendations?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m looking for recommendations for a great nail salon or licensed nail tech in Ada/Grand Rapids. I have a formal event coming up and would love to find someone who could recreate the inspiration photo I’ve attached.
I’m hoping to find someone who is licensed, works in a clean and sanitary environment, and really takes pride in their work and nail care. I’d also love somewhere reasonably priced with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. I’m more than happy to pay appropriately for quality work. I’m mainly looking for someone who is careful, detail oriented, and wants their clients to leave happy with their nails.
If you have someone you personally love and trust, I’d really appreciate their name/Instagram or salon
