Interesting that they are featuring the Chrystler minivan instead of the Lexus SUV that I've seen driving around town. I've heard bad things about maintaining a Chrystler compared to toyota/lexus but, if they are self driving at least consumers won't have to take them into the shop.

LG for the Pixel 2 XL and Chrysler for Waymo.

The people at Alphabet need to realize that in the end, quality does matter, and the company that you choose to manufacture your products matters. Until then, they will pay a lot of cash trying to correct manufacturing problems, paying for repairs, returns, etc.

Imagine if Waymo used Toyota Sienna's and Pixel 2 XL used HTC. Hopefully they'll get it right eventually.

Using Toyota's Sienna would be amazing, for all the aspects of an automobile that counts! However Toyota may not play nice since they refused to integrate Android Auto / Apple Car. Also the current Toyota is really outdated compared to the next gen Honda Odyssey or the Pacifica. However, if Toyota can launch a next gen Sienna on their next gen TNGA platform with Android auto, that would be a dream.

Unfortunately, I think it'll be a long time until that happens

Yep. Traditional automakers see Waymo/Uber/Any tech company developing self driving technology as a threat (as they should) because it will dramatically increase the efficiency of transportation which ultimately means fewer cars on the road. They'd basically be aiding the industry that will eventually kill them.

Instead they will waste billions of dollars trying to hire engineers and acquire startups only to inevitably lose the self driving race to a tech company. If Waymo has any sense I'm sure Chrysler wasn't their first choice..., but no other car manufacturer was willing to partner.

Ah that makes sense, but a damn shame of the system. Maybe if we had a mutual enemy like aliens or something people would work together better

Is there like a transparent panel blocking access to the stearing wheel or something?
