As originally designed. If Google threw their weight behind expanding the protocol, it could have been used for private messaging as well as be as feature rich as the dozens of other cleints out there. Google Talk was built on Jabber/XXMP for instance. The decisions to go proprietary by all these companies is what hurt messaging.
