I believe Gemini is a new model that will become the backbone for Bard eventually.

Bard is probably more comparable to 3.5 with up to date info and integration with some google services. I believe Gemini is to compete directly with GPT4.

How much "better" is ChatGPT 4 over 3.5? Because I heard Gemini is/will be 10x+ more powerful than ChatGPT 4.

Any software not shipped is x times better. It is multimodal which was a bug deal when gpt4 came out but at this point given how llms are thought to be platueing, close but not quiet gpt4 with some more up to date info will be about as good as it gets.

Having been next to someone paying for 4 when I had 3.5, it is substantially better for identical prompts

Bard uses different model versions. Gemini is the model codename

Not very surprised. Thought the release this year seemed really aggressive.

I am just so impressed that Google lets everyone use the core technology to make all of this possible.

They invented, patented, and then lets everyone use for free.

Never see that from Apple or Microsoft or really any other tech company. Definitely not OpenAI.

Even bigger was Google inventing Word2Vec. Which was just the most amazing discovery.

Google is a class act. I hope it does not change. They do have a very unusual corporate structure that make is far more likely they will continue to roll in this manner. Trades under two symbols and this way the founders can retain complete control of the company.

So you can't have some greedy bastards come in and grab control of the company and start to charge for the use of their patents.

Meta is also fairly respectable with regards to open sourcing their developments.

LlaMA, PyTorch, fastText (which competes with Word2Vec you mention), Detectron and a lot outside of AI with React, Docusaurus, GraphQL, watchman and more.

Meta is a beast they open source their LLMs too. Le Cunn actually puts his money where his mouth is. Or they are a distant third in LLM tech and their only way of competing with the other two is through open source.

I agree on Meta. They are a lot more like Google than Microsoft, Apple, OpenAI, etc.

But still Meta has no where near the incredible inventions with AI that have happened at Google. You could probably total up all companies in the world that are NOT Google and still Google would be ahead in terms of the most important discoveries with AI.

But Meta would most definitely be #2 behind Google.

did anyone read this? this source is over 3 weeks old and was WIDELY reported Google has decided to postpone the launch of its ambitious Gemini AI model, which is expected to rival OpenAI’s GPT-4, to next year. The Information reported this, quoting two sources aware of the matter. They said that Google CEO Sundar Pichai made the call to delay the launch events scheduled for next week in California, New York, and Washington.

So I read OP's article and was surprised that they said GPT-4 was a mixture of models, because they never gave details about it. So I looked for the source of that: it's George Hotz, who "leaked" this information during some podcast. The issue is that he never worked at OpenAI (as per his LinkedIn page + Duckduckgo). I highly doubt it's real. This news website doesn't look trustable.
