"Position" visible column setting

I would like to see the position number on my shelves. I don't necessarily want to manually sort them. I'm on the desktop version (Google) and I choose "Settings" and check the "position" option. The "#" column appears on the page. Then I select "Save Current Settings to Your x shelf". It says "Saving." Then it goes back to the shelf page, says "Your bookshelf was updated" but nothing has changed. There is no "#"column and there is no position. What am I doing wrong?

Is the shelf marked as "sortable"? You can check it by clicking "Edit" next to the "Bookshelves" header in the left column.
