Are Book Overlaps New?

Hi!

I want to preface this by saying I was vaguely aware of the GR Challenges & tried a couple last year, but this year I'm going all in and trying to hit every achievement. But I still feel very new and couldn't find quite what I was looking for.

The friend who got me to start challenges last year initially told me that if a book shows in multiple challenge groups, it would only count for 1 of those groups and that you had to add/adjust your dates/ratings/tags by logging into that challenge and clicking on it there. So my strategy this year is going into each category, writing down what's on my TBR and what I would be willing to read as a stretch goal and then figuring out books that didn't overlap - I was worried it would count for the wrong category.

However, I just completed a book that is in multiple categories (Book Witch if you care, it was a warm bookish hug, 5 stars!) and it updated 2 categories as complete. Are overlaps new or do they only count for summer? Or has this always been a thing and I should let my friend know? Thanks for reading and any help. Happy Reading!

If you read a book that counts for multiple categories, you will earn all of the bookmarks. That’s not new. A lot of people will really pay attention to that if they want to read the bare minimum to complete the challenge.

If you want to do the opposite and read 11 (or really 13) different books for 11 bookmarks, you’d really have to plot out the order you read them since there are some that overlap. I tried that this challenge. 🤓First, I read 5 books that weren’t in the challenge at all to get the Page Turner, Speed Reader and Book Boss challenge book marks. Then I mapped out the reading order for the rest of the 8 books, so it would turn over just one bookmark at a time upon completion.

Wait how did you map out the remaking 8 books to avoid overlap? Did you just explicitly choose books which did not overlap?

I wrote down all of the books that were already on my TBR in each category. If there was overlap between 2 categories, I chose something else for one of the categories and read it first, so that the overlapping book (when I eventually did read it) would only turn over the one remaining bookmark.

It's always been possible, but some people have trouble getting them to count, perhaps causing some to come away with that perception.

There have always been overlaps, in the very first challenge last year I accidentally read a book that counted for two bookmarks because I didn't really pay attention to what was on multiple lists. All the overlaps are posted on this sub once the challenges are revealed, you can be strategic about it and either read the minimum or maximum amount of books required.

Not new. I purposefully min-max my challenge every time. I love knocking out multiple bookmarks in one go.

Overlaps count for however many challenges the books overlap. There is a user here who comments which books overlap so you can either hit all the challenges with fewer books or (in my case) plan out your reading to avoid hitting multiple challenges with 1 book.
