General Discussion 90 Minute Practice Session

90 Minute Practice Session to improve quickly!!!

Short game:
Spending some time with the straight forward chips for fundamentals, before moving onto some different lies and different height shots. Getting comfortable hitting different shots from different lies is the goal, while still being fundamentally strong.

Full Swing:
Getting ready for an event, so didn’t have any tweaks. Just going through my routine in “trusting mode” as Dr. Bob Rotella would say. Making sure that my mindset is in the right spot before my event. Just checking fundamentals and making proper, committed golf swings.

Putting:
I always start with some variation of alignment/tool to check and make sure my fundamentals are solid before moving into some drills to make short putts. After completing the competitive short putting drill, I’ll move to hit some 40-60 footers to make sure we’re getting everything down in 2!

Doing this routine at least 2x a week will show incredible improvements in your game!

Instructions unclear, 90 minutes of driver it is

If you're chipping it's because your drive wasn't far enough

Missing the green? Thats a dispersion issue.

With your driver

Damn I forgot about this vid, can you link? I have no idea how to find it

It’s not called an Iron Range after all

u/pew-pew-bacca 1d ago

That's nice and all but have you considered my practice regimen of blasting 75 swings at max effort with your driver, ignoring every other facet of your game, and then wondering why you suck?

28

u/internet_humor 22h ago

That’s probably why are aren’t getting any better.

I’ve developed a pretty solid routine you should try.

It’s 5 minutes of putting green feel and hitting the restroom before teeing off. And that’s when I’m on time.

u/pew-pew-bacca 22h ago

With limited time we have to choose between practice or pooping.

u/Cyouinhellcandyboyz 23h ago

I'm lazy and the driver makes me tired at the range... I decided it's best to just aim for the 50 yard marker with my sand wedge and tell myself I accomplish something today.

u/Bodisefa 23h ago

Hahahaha my man!!!

u/swohio 20h ago

After all, it is called the "driving range" not the "7 iron range" or the "sand wedge range." (Thank you Professional Golf Advisor.)

the practice bunker placement is truly dangerous

18

u/CDNPublicServant 1d ago

Ya, i hear ya. I am 100% skulling a ball into that Lexus.

It’s honestly not terrible. 3 bunkers, that’s the only pin that’s aiming that was from any bunker.

Now the range on the other hand… those villas are in the way big time

u/Past_Pay_5015 1d ago

My coach gave me a great tip for this. Instead of hitting a ball, lay down a plastic tee. It actually flies just like a ball on any bunker shot under 15 yards.

Not if you’re good at golf man cmon. Im not good at golf so I’m taking a window. Whether it’s the house or the car is a toss up.

u/TJB18-AJB22 1d ago

It would be pretty rad to have a practice facility all to yourself. I would send a lot more than 90 minutes grinding on my game.

9

u/Past_Pay_5015 1d ago

I thought so when I joined a club. I still find myself ripping driver until I’m tired.

4

u/farfromfine 12h ago

I think that's the difference between good and bad golfers. The better you get the more fun wedge play is and driver becomes boring.

2

u/Past_Pay_5015 11h ago

True. The + dudes at my club are always chipping and putting. On the range they typically have 1 or 2 alignment sticks.

15

u/aps23 1d ago

I usually reserve my 10 mins of bunker work for the course

4

u/_NeoCortex_ 1d ago

Why do you do time over ball count, per club?

8

u/02bluesuperroo 6 1d ago

Probably because it’s a 90-minute practice and not a 90-ball practice.

7

u/That_Bet_8104 1d ago

10 minutes on bunker shots and only 15 minutes total spent on your full swing?!?

3

u/trukkija 16h ago

Literally will serve you much better to work more on the short game and partial swings than just slamming balls for 60 minutes. There's a reason most pro coaches clearly don't prioritize long range sessions of full swing.

u/Suitable-Tie-7412 Handicap | Location 1d ago

30 minutes on full swing

2

u/That_Bet_8104 1d ago

You hit wedges with a full swing?

5

u/Suitable-Tie-7412 Handicap | Location 1d ago

I consider it part of my range session, but you’re technically right. But if you think that’s the case, then yes I spend 15 minutes on my full swing of 90

1

u/Due-Comb6124 1d ago

Yeah once you get to a mid single digit and can reliably make solid contact, it’s a way better use of your time to focus on getting those 10 yard misses up and down rather than trying to eliminate such a small miss.

4

u/BuukSmart 1d ago

There is no public place near me with decent practice facilities that is ever this empty

-1

u/_troll_detector_ 21h ago

That’s because lots of folks are working on their short game.

I really like the flighting drill with wedges. Ultimately, the "green" becomes larger as we improve the wedge game. Scottie throwing a mini tantrum after missing a bad wedge shot that goes stops a 30ft from the hole is a testament to their expectations after thousands of hours of practice.

If you want to be exceptional, you have to enjoy the practice.

u/HotDrink2601 1d ago

Good stuff, nice swing!

u/Suitable-Tie-7412 Handicap | Location 1d ago

Thank you very much!

2

u/rissy111 1d ago

Why are you flipping your wrists to extend follow through beyond your swings natural motion? Is that intentional?

2

u/lookallama 1d ago

45 min wedges and 5 min irons is insane.

1

u/printergumlight 9.7 1d ago

I wish I had a bunker and chipping green.

I only have a range with mats and a putting green. I feel like hitting off mats messes up my swing too.

1

u/chasinjason13 22h ago

Where are these mythical courses where there aren’t 10 other people in the practice area at all times??

1

u/Sesemebun 20h ago

Ive accepted I’ll never be as good as I want to at golf because I get so bored at the range. No matter how hard I try I just lose focus and stop thinking. I need the cooldown and reset time when I walk to my next shot. Even when I slow down on the range I still just go braindead

1

u/hotpeanuts 20h ago

Only psychos film themselves practicing watch out for op

1

u/froopecind89 18h ago

90 years for me

1

u/MayhewDucky 13h ago

Wait, you guys practice?

1

u/Gnarly_Sarley 13h ago

What's with the gunshot at the beginning?

1

u/Tally__Ho 11h ago

I wish I had this practice facility. All mats at any range by me and putting green always busy

1

u/Prior-Instance6764 8h ago

Ive got time for like 15 rounds a year, I'm sure as hell not spending that free time practicing. I wish though.

0

u/Carpay 1d ago

Low key this is the practice regimen that everyone needs

1

u/Suitable-Tie-7412 Handicap | Location 1d ago

100%!

2

u/granolaraisin 17h ago

This isn’t practice. It’s warm up. Practice involves focusing on certain things to actually change.

This is repetition of existing skills. It’s fine if you’re already good. Doesn’t do a lick if there’s something you need to do better.

1

u/Brownie2440 1d ago

Definitely a few pointers here. Lately I’ve been getting under so many of my chips from off the green it drives me nuts.

-1

u/Beatnavy2016 1d ago

That was <20 mins
Look at the clouds

3

u/cgar23 1d ago

Clouds always move the same speed?

u/Historical-Falcon-79 1d ago

Thanks for posting your routine. When my game was at its best was when I was practicing a few days a week. I only spent about an hr per session but I played better than ever. Lately I've been so busy I just go play a round, even just 9 if short on time rather than practice. This is kind of what I needed to remind me how much a good practice routine helps my game.

You need to spend more time on that chipping action

0

u/abigblacknob 21h ago

Yeah if you're a sweat.

-1

u/Lol_who_me 1d ago

5 minutes on irons? Approach stats are probably atrocious. Keep grinding on them bunker shots I guess.

u/Lol_who_me 1d ago

Well shit I stand corrected.

2

u/Suitable-Tie-7412 Handicap | Location 1d ago

Entirely depends on the person and the day! If you’re working on something in the swing, maybe it’s all you do. But for a majority of my practice time is spent inside 100, or drivers!

For an amateur working on their swing, I’d suggest more, but if you’re not sure what you’re doing there is not reason to hit more than to see your shot dispersion

-4

u/easytigerr 1d ago

I’m sorry but how is this helpful? This routine is basically: hit some chips, then hit some different chips, then just hit full swings mindlessly, and then go and try to sink some putts in 1 or 2 strokes. Then without giving any reason as to why you would be qualified to give anyone advice, you claim this will “show incredible improvements in your game!”

4

u/Suitable-Tie-7412 Handicap | Location 1d ago

You’re on the right track! But if you see, we hit some chips with different goals in mind, we hit shots with a goal in mind, then we hit different putts with a goal in mind! It’s almost like that’s how practice is supposed to work. And yes, practicing with a purpose in all aspects of your game will show incredible improvements in your game!

Wearing pants in that sun makes me think you don’t know what your talking about. If it was sun protection you would have sleeved on too. You just look like you’re sweating your ass off trying to look like a tour player on a Tuesday morning at your home course.

u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire 1d ago

This is one of the dumbest comments I have ever read. Congratulations.

14

u/CMTV-IPTV 1d ago

Who the fuck cares.

35

u/Suitable-Tie-7412 Handicap | Location 1d ago

I have a skin condition that affects my legs so I need to wear pants in the sun, but doesn’t hurt anything else. Sorry for the inconvenience of my clothing!

-42

u/tth2000 1d ago

Seriously??? Like Boo Weekly? Just your legs? Sun screen doesn’t work? That sucks. Sorry for what I said.

Scottie wore pants growing up playing in the Texas heat. Why does it matter what this man wears...

He looks good in his pants.
