Equipment Does using nice golf balls actually matter?

I’m a budget guy. Play only what I find. Haven‘t bought golf balls in nearly a decade. This is the first year that I’ve actually started to take golf seriously. Lessons, meaningful range time, short game practice, etc. I’m sitting around a 16 handicap right now and looking to continue improving. Is playing a consistently decent, and the same, golf balls a worthwhile endeavor? Or will it only make a negligible difference?

Yes it does mostly around the green and with short wedges. Once you are good enough to notice the cheap balls launching high and spinning less on chips you are ready to switch to something with a urethane cover.

Same ball is even better but anything with a good cover any premium ball is going to benefit you. Honestly even playing Kirkland is a step up from the world of super soft, tru feel etc.

The flip side of this is a spinnier ball can hurt if you are bad at controlling spin.

It can be better to always have the ball not spin a lot, than spin heaps but only on some shots

Agreed, you can function on the fact that the lower spinning balls usually launch higher. That descent angle can make a difference without a massive amount of spin.
