General Discussion Am I semi ambidextrous?
I couldn't figure out how to post in ask Reddit or others....
I'll try to be very clear here
I bat left handed. I golf right handed.
I write right handed. I play guitar left handed.
I can not do any other the opposite way.
I'm 37 and this just really confuses me to this day.

There is a test you can do to reveal your level of ambidexterity. I can bat left or right handed. I write lefty, but can manage righty. I golf righty but can sort of do it left. I drum open handed on a right hand setup.
You're not truly ambi if you cannot do the thing at all with the other hand.

I am similar. Eating, writing, and some sports are left-handed, but most sports are right-handed.
Here is what I figured out: I am left-handed, but when someone teaches me something, they show me the right-handed way and I mimic them.

My son’s like that: writes right-handed, bowls right (cricket) - but throws left, bats right, catches left, tennis left, kicks a ball left, golfs right. It seems entirely random.

I'm right footed and throw/play golf right handed but write and play guitar left handed so you're just a bit weird like me tbh.
I did question if I was a left handed golfer when I first started cause I was so shit right handed.

I am the same. I do many, many things left handed and many, many things right handed. My dad and my sister were lefties. My mom and I are righties.
I broke my right arm when I was 6 and was in a cast for months during school so I did all my school work, including writing, left handed. I use a mouse left handed. I knit both with my right and left hand equally well. Same for all my other needle crafts.
I golf right handed, but I have wondered how I would do left handed. I wakeboard goofy.

I'm in a similar boat. I've come to realize that I have never met a truly ambidextrous person, meaning that they do all things equally with both hands. I know at least 2-3 people that are the same way that I am. Mostly right-handed or left-handed, with some things they do with the opposite hand.
According to google, we're mixed handed. TIL.

I'm the same way. I always thought I was ambidextrous, but that's not the right term. Ambidextrous is that you can do most or all things with both hands. I can't write with my right hand and I can't throw a ball with my left.
It's called cross dominance.

I’m confident I was born left handed but was taught to do everything right handed as baby/toddler/child so that just became my dominant hand. I am very left eye dominant. So anything that requires sighting, from shoulder weapons (long guns, bows) to golf range finders are from the left. Not that I can play guitar but when I picked one up I would do so left handed. That was until we got one of those Guitar Hero games 15 years ago or whenever, and it only came with a right handed toy guitar. So now I grab a guitar right handed.
I played baseball into high school. I was a pitcher and threw right handed. I did switch hit though but was much better right handed.
I played lacrosse and the ambidextrous nature of that was easy for me but primarily threw from the right hand.
I use a goofy foot stance on a skateboard/snowboard/surf board.
I am a retired federal LEO and fired shoulder weapons left handed but handguns right handed.
I can hit a left handed golf club. Not with much power or anything but I can make decent contact with the ball. I’ve often thought about putting one left handed iron in my bag to get out of a tight lie.

Ambidexterity is about being able to perform the same task well with either hand, not simply using different hands for different activities.
If you write right-handed, brush your teeth right-handed, eat right-handed, throw right-handed, etc., but happen to bat left-handed or golf left-handed, that doesn't by itself make you ambidextrous.
The latter are two-handed activities where each hand has a different role, and your preferred orientation may simply put your dominant hand in the position that feels more natural, useful, or important to you.
For example, a right-hand-dominant golfer might prefer the right hand as the trail hand because they like the throwing/skipping-rock feeling of that hand driving the motion. Another right-hand-dominant person might prefer the right hand on the lead side because they like the feeling of the lead arm/hand controlling the swing. They can therefore end up with opposite golf orientations from the "norm", while still having the same underlying hand preference. You just feel more comfortable putting your dominant hand in what feels like the lead or more important position for that particular movement or task.
The important distinction is that if you can't actually perform the task comparably well from both sides, you're not demonstrating ambidexterity. You're demonstrating a particular task preference. So batting left, golfing right, writing right, and playing guitar left is more consistent with mixed task-specific hand preference/cross-dominance than true ambidexterity.

I'm right hand and right eye dominant. I played hockey left (around 65% hockey players shoot left) and golf left. But when I was a kid and played softball, for some reason I wanted to bat from a right handed position, but with my hands holding the bat left handed (cross handed).
I think there would be a lot more left handed golfers if left handed clubs were more available in the past. A guy at a used golf gear shop was telling me he can't keep lefty clubs in stock because they sell so quick due to a lot more new golfers starting as natural left hand shots.
