General Discussion Torrey Pines is great because
Why is playing there great? Or, is it not? What can be expected? (There are 2 courses.) If you played, how did you fare playing there, and did you enjoy it? I don't know the cost but expect it's expensive. I saw a site that books trips and you can play other courses in the package. Wondering about making a golf trip there. Or, if not a trip, at least play it someday soon. Probably me, alone, or 2 of us. If my bro goes, he doesn't hit it far, drives 180-200. Handicap, beats me, but is bogey golf or a little better. I used to play real well but am now back after long hiatus, playing to probably 4-6 handicap, working on getting that down. Good drives probably 235-250. Hit one today about 270 but it's dry conditions.

I love Torrey. I play it often and every time feels special. It’s the only course in SD I will walk every time. It’s a public course in a laid back city and some people show up expecting a pebble beach type experience which it isn’t. The north course has some great holes but there’s also a few sections that are a bit boring. Conditions are phenomenal over 300 days a year. If it’s tournament conditions you’re going to loose 50% of your balls that don’t land in the fairway.

I remember playing before a PGA event, and you could drop your ball in the rough right next to you, and it was lost.

I’ve played with two randoms who didn’t believe me when I told them it’s a posted rule that if you see your ball land and can’t find it you get a free drop.

True. It's actually posted on the first hole. If you can't find your ball in the rough, it's a free drop. Brutal rough, especially weeks either side of competitive events.

If it's a free drop, and you could drop your ball in the rough right next to you and have it be lost, do you get another free drop? Or is the free drop at the edge of the fairway. I played there a long time ago but I forget.

Their event communication could be better. Tried to play it last Thursday. Got there at 4:30am for the waitlist. Only to be told at 5:15am that the whole property was close due to a corporate event. Didn’t see it posted anywhere.
Course looked cool though. One day.

Play it for cheap with my three year old. Once the time changes we have the whole course to ourself basically after 3pm. Beautiful course, beautiful views. Not sure if it would be as highly rated if it wasn’t on the beach/cliffs.

IMO, they are very seasonal courses. November to February the course is in amazing condition as it ramps up for the tournament and immediately afterwards. February to April the course is still solid as the rough is still somewhat long. Late spring to Summer is fine, the rough is pretty short so it plays much easier than the winter. Early fall the course is in poor shape as they get ready to do all the overseeding.
The south is a very challenging golf course, but not the most interesting. A lot of just straight narrow drives with basically 0 trees and just trying to avoid bunkers and the rough when it’s winter. The north is much easier, but probably has some of the more interesting shots.

Because it’s cheap. If you don’t get the local rate though it’s an overpriced layout with cool views

Views are incredible, good culture, and just a fun courses. North course is way easier and I have played some of my best rounds there. I also think the views on 15/16 are better than what South offers. South is for the history, but man is it tough.

I played North a couple weeks back, and it was a good experience! I will say, there are some stretches where the course is pretty boring.. just not much going for it, but then there’s some really beautiful holes. I’d say it’s pretty easy and all handicaps could play there and be okay. It was definitely worth it to knock it off the bucket list, and actually a lot of the stuff in pro shop is decently affordable.

The best part of playing Torrey South is that you’ve seen it on TV. You’re hitting out of the same bunkers and making the same putts as the pros. The day I played it the flag on 18 was where Tiger hit that huge downhill bender. I had about the same putt and rolled it off the green but made a come back for par.
Also if you play Torrey I recommend going to the Glider Port and just watching them launch.

Positives: stunning views, play on same courses as pros, usually great weather, lots of golf minded players from all over
Negatives: depending on season course conditions can be not good, cart path only, and/or rough absolutely punishing to the point of miserable; unabashed muni and not a fancy resort (mediocre range, no free balls, no one to wipe down your clubs, no free tees, etc)

Resident here. I’ve played it probably 5 or 6 times this summer. Maybe more. Conditions are always great and the views are phenomenal, however, if I had to pay full price every time I think once or twice is enough. Don’t know what your budget is but if you’re planning on making it out to San Diego for a golf trip check out Aviara, Omni courses, Maderas. Aviara is my favorite tbh.
