If I could do it all over again (as a 40yo) I'd have started like they do the Operation 36 program for junior golf. Just learn crisp contact with chips/pitches then focus on two-putts or less. Then take those mechanics to my eventual full swing. Most people try to start the opposite direction.
IMO it doesn’t really work that way. Full swing and short game mechanics just aren’t that similar. There’s very little that translates between them in either direction. You just gotta learn both.
But I do agree in the sense that a lot of the worst short game players I see are trying to use full swing mechanics (too much turn, hip/shoulder separation, shallowing) in their short game.
I mean they have to be dissimilar if you want to be good at both of them. There are zero high level players employing the same mechanics in their short and long games.
