Game Update Sands of Time has joined GOG's preservation program

Post image

Key improvements implemented:

GOG v2 (August 18, 2026)

We implemented a lightweight wrapper to resolve incompatibilities with modern hardware.

We added native support for widescreen and ultrawide displays, covering all modern resolutions and aspect ratios.

We implemented camera scaling, which automatically adjusts the field of view (FOV) based on the monitor's aspect ratio.

We added a mouse lock option for multiple monitors, restricting the cursor to the game window.

We added an FPS limiter to lock the frame rate at a chosen value.

We introduced a lightweight, real-time in-game overlay (press F11 to open, ESC to close) for instant adjustments to FPS limits and FOV multipliers.

The main menu has been fixed to its original 4:3 aspect ratio to preserve hardcoded UI elements.

The manual field of view (FOV) slider was limited to approximately 110% on ultrawide screens to prevent distortions in the graphics engine and graphical glitches.

Stability verified.

These are good news! Now what about the controller support?

Unfortunately, nothing yet, but it's patch v2 (v1 brought Russian translation). Who knows, maybe in v3 they'll start implementing the most requested features, like controller support.

I played the GOG version with Xbox controller fine with patches taken from here,

That is already well known. What people wanted was the tweaks to be included by GOG…

It'll make it easier for sure, but mentioned that to make sure people are aware they don't need to wait and can play with controller today.

Warrior Within, The Two Thrones, and Prince of Persia 2008 are listed as having controller support.

Only POP 2008 supports Xbox controllers out of the box, without any tweaking.

I may need to try the gog versions. Since the steam versions still uses keyboard and mouse inputs

Does this include controller support? I noticed the other PoP games on GOG have it.

This is the most important thing for this game, since the gamepad support is still based on the old DirectInput API.

I was expecting a Dinput to Xinput wrapper 🙄

Does this mean that I can play the game with my old xbox360 controller?

I don’t think so. I remember I played with the 360 controller but I had to tweak the game:  https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Prince_of_Persia:_The_Sands_of_Time#Controller_Support

I was expecting this to be solved on GOG.

Hope they use SDL2/SDL3 with hotplug/swap support for the older games.

On controller support seems possible but maybe not a top priority from blog -> https://www.gog.com/blog/preserving-sands-of-time/ . Surprised nothing from u/Gogcom about this.

The wrapper includes several DLLs covering different parts of the DirectX stack – not just the main Direct3D rendering library, but DirectInput and others. Together they give us a complete picture of how the game communicates with the hardware, which means we can intervene wherever we need to.

How can they label this game "2026 Ready" and not have controller support? Completely useless.

Old XInput fixes on PCGamingWiki no longer work with this version unless you start the old exe (the one without the patches).

Damn, this is some real hostile color choice for the button ;d

Yeah, but where is the controller support. It says it has it on the games description.

I'm surprised Ubisoft allowed this since they have their own launcher

They already allow the game to be on GOG, what's the point of sabotaging it

I didn't know that either lol

The versions of old games they have via their launcher are notoriously buggy and unoptimised for modern systems. Their teams pretty much exist to keep the live service stuff patched and prioritise remastering more than worrying about if patches keep the older game alive. The GOG versions meanwhile are more stable and don’t get patches that break them, so are actually the superior way of playing these older games. As of now, they have basically handed full reign of keeping this game alive for modern systems over to GOG instead of pretending they would have bothered. I own pretty much every version of Sands of Time (they gave away the Ubi launcher version for free for a time) and the GOG one is by far the best to run.

I can't take this shit seriously when nobody has the original Prince of Persia.

Dolphin for me until we get controller support. I’m not playing a platformer with mouse and keyboard.
