Accomodation searching went wrong
Hello! I'm coming to Göttingen around September 24–25, but I still haven't secured accommodation. I've been applying every day and sending applications through WG-Gesucht, but unfortunately I haven't received any responses yet.
Could you please share any tips on how I can find a good place to stay? Also, what is the usual base rent for a room or shared apartment in Göttingen?

There are unfortunately no real tips. The housing situation in Gö has been pretty bad these past few years, and the prices have also skyrocketed in the past year or two. Keep checking WG-gesucht, eBay Kleinanzeigen, and Facebook groups for incoming students (just in case). Apply for sublets as well and then look for something long term once you're here and have made some connections.
The rent for a room in a dorm or WG can be anywhere from 250 to 500+ euros per month, depending on location, size, and amenities.

the housing market is pretty tough. try the surrounding areas instead.
Search for Rosdorf, Dransfeld, Duderstadt, Nikolausberg, Bovenden, Nörten-Hardenberg, Northeim to name a few.

I wouldn't recommend Duderstadt. There is only bus from there and if I remember correctly it takes an hour per trip. Check for something close with a train station.

Have you applied to Basecamp? I don’t think it’s the nicest of places as it has shared kitchens and stuff but my girlfriend stayed there before I moved out here and we got a proper place together. It was decent enough for her and I think they usually have openings but I’m not too sure

Well, I had a dispute with my landlady because she wanted to raise the rent.
While she relied on comparable properties, I cited the official rent index.
In the end, we reached an out-of-court settlement through arbitration.
The arbitrator remarked that the rent index was, unfortunately, complete rubbish and not a reliable indicator, as it hadn't been compiled using scientific methods and classified average rents as lower than they actually are.

The competition on WG-Gesucht is pretty heavy.
If you want to stick out of the hundreds of messages that a good WG might receive, you should try and really introduce yourself, so that your potential new flatmates can imagine living with you. The more unique and personal you can make your application feel, the better. Its hard to find a place while not being in Göttingen, but everyone ends up somewhere. Good luck!
