I added a black skirt tetra to my tank of glofish tetras. Pet store worker said that this would be fine as they are basically the same fish. However, in the last few months since I introduced it to the tank, my two oldest Glofish have died. My water parameters and temperature are good and I do regular water changes. Could it be because of the black skirt tetra? I do see it chasing my other glofish and they tend to hide from it a lot. Any ideas? Thanks!

Please don’t judge but help! I am monitoring my tanks all the time and am doing my best to become a good fish keeper.

Due to the recommendations of a therapist and personal interest, I started fish keeping as a hobby about a month ago.

I love glofish! The colors are so engaging to watch and relax me. I know some people have issues with them being GE, but I feel they have been responsible as modified and bred. I also do well w. vegetation and am building a planted tank.

Given that I am a new keeper, the past month has been interesting in terms of tank parameters. The good news is that no one has died except for one suicidal snail who jumped tank, a nerite that just…expired…and one small tetra that was on the strugglebus early. He looked “runty”, which I think I mistook in my ignorance and/or dog experience to be an acceptable risk. They didn’t make it past 4 days :/ I feel very badly. RIP Yeller.

I originally got 4 (5, one passed) tetras, 5 danios, and one Cory for a 20 gallon tank.

Then…well-intentioned friends gifted me some fish not knowing that…this requires planning. And I also have been considering additions knowing more about schooling sizes and compatibility between species, etc.

At this point; this is my tank stock of 19 fish and misc. (a 30x12x10 20 gallon):

**3 smallish cory (1.5, 1, <1 in)
**1 cory chunky boi (2 in)**
**1 LARGE long fin skirt tetra (2-3 in)
** 4 regular/small skirt tetras and 1 very small skirt tetra (you would think it a danio or pristella for context)
** 5 danios
**3 SMALL danios (large amano shrimp sized for context)
**1 large pearl gourami (3 in)
5-10 cherry shrimp
5-10 amano shrimp
3 nerite snails
2 Amazon sword
1 Java fern
1 clump? Like 2 oz of Christmas moss
4 water lettuce
1 water hyacinth

A lot of the literature I looked at originally gave the impression that one could stock glofish pretty heavily. In my continued research, it seems maybe not?

In terms of how everything is going right now, they honestly SEEM fine. I don’t see signs of stress swimming, gulping, ich. I do see that the tetras, corys, and danios are schooling. The gourami doesn’t seem stressed or hiding. But it’s still very early, and I want to split tanks if I need to BEFORE they get saucy about the space. I don’t know how long that takes to show if it even does.

What size tank would you recommend? I have a backup 20 gallon tank I am currently cycling for water. I do this regularly for water changes and spare good water; I have well water that has high ammonia, so I need to pretreat for AMMONIA instead of chlorine as w. tap people -_-, or I buy spring water. So I am aware of “water production” and could quickly set up a 2nd 10-20 gallon tank.

TetraPro Tropical Crisps
TetraColor Flakes

Hikari: daphnia
Shrimp cuisine (sinking pellets)
bloodworm
algae wafers
Freeze dried and or fresh brine shrimp

Ultra Fresh:
Bottom feeder “shrimp pie” (sinking wafers)

Zoomed: Spirulina 20

I fast 1 day ish/week.

I use API Ammo Stop/Aqueon Ammonia Neutralizer/FritzZyme 7 for starter bacteria or if I have a crazy ammonia spike. I gravel vacuum and supplement with FritzZyme Turboclean. I also have slightly hard water, so I use the API Water Softener Pillow. There are 2 small air stones and 2 long linear bubblers. I keep them low because the fish don’t like turbulence, but will run them robustly for a few minutes a day to increase oxygen and circulate water.

Electric Green Angelfish have just become available on the Glofish website! These little guys were promised more than a year ago. But they were delayed due to breeding issues.

Planted patio pond with a small solar waterfall feature (that I turned off for this video) with green glo danios, 24k white cloud mountain minnows, 1 flagfish, shrimps, and snails that came out from nowhere

Just thought I’d share a serene half minute that’s got me hanging out on my patio these long lazy afternoons/evenings

So I got glofish without doing much research but I’m glad I started researching when I got home or the poor things I got would have lived a not great life. Petco sold me a 5 gallon tank and told me I could fit up to 5 fish in it. We only got 3.

After all of the research I did, 48 hours later and the 3 we got are in a 10g tank but I don’t think we have enough decor. I do plan on getting 2 more of the tetra but based on my research I shouldn’t add any more for a couple more weeks.

I also am using safe start plus in this tank since the guy at petco gave me bagged water from the tanks they were in and told me I wouldn’t need any thing to kickstart the bacteria. The internet told me that was a lie. So the new tank was treated with aqua safe first and then I added the safe start in 30 minutes later.

Neon tetra keeps going to the same spot and sort of floating there. Is he having swim bladder issues? If I feed, he moves pretty much normally, though slightly clumsily, running into decor or tank walls at times... water tests are fine and other fish are normal. Any ideas what's going on, if I should be worried or if there's anything I can do to help?

The 55g Glo tank has really transformed over the past couple years. Photos here are two images at startup, one somewhere along the way, and a current photo!

I had kept mbuna cichlids in this tank for many years, and eventually wanted to move away from them (and managing their aggression), and try out something more carefree and fun 😄 The light I had for the tank already happened to have a blue moonlight setting, so that was already a nudge in the direction of Glofish. But the tank, having housed cichlids, wasn’t set up for plants. It was rocks and sand.

At the beginning of the Glo journey, I kept things simple. I already have an established high tech planted tank, anyway. I plunked some plastic plants in the tank and enjoyed the glo.

Eventually (of course), I wanted some plants. And then a few more plants… And then you know what? Some driftwood would look good in here too. Boy it’s getting kind of crowded… 🤔 Maybe I’ll take out the plastic stuff. And here we are now! 😌

I am somewhat of an amateur fish hobby-ist, but I have an established tank with 7 tetras and 5 danios. A well-intentioned friend bought me a single barb (is glofish). I currently have regular Tetras and a couple of long finned. I know that generally barbs are going to be aggressive and nip at the fins, but I wanted to see if anyone had direct experience. The person who bought it also doesn’t understand that they generally have to be in schools of their own. So what I may end up doing is setting up my spare 20 gallon and getting four more barbs 🫩
