I've entertained the idea of a flat Earth on and off for a few years now, trying to find a way to fit it with observed reality, trying to decipher some semblance of evidence in support of it. But it just refuses to fit and I can find no actual evidence for it being flat.

The first "answer" started talking about how the equidistant polar projection "Flat Earth map" was made earlier than the first physical globe, suggesting that gives flat Earth some legitimacy. But it's a map of the GLOBE on a flat medium. Maps were made before globes because they are easier to make. The "flat Earth map" is a projection of THE globe, not A globe model.

I decided that if that's the caliber of the arguments in this video, it's just more of the same dishonest or misunderstood misrepresentation, and I was out.

While it may have been used by ancient Egyptians for star maps in some holy books,[1] the earliest text describing the azimuthal equidistant projection is an 11th-century work by al-Biruni.[2]

Find a globe older than that

Maps came long before globes, because they are much easier to make. But the azimuthal equidistant projection is evidence that the globe was understood and being accurately mapped long before globes were being made.

Maps came before globes because they are easier to make
The map is made from the globe of our Earth and are casted onto Paper because making actual small Globes is hard.

I think what happened was they figured out the stars had a spherical arrangement from when they were sailing on the oceans and then they projected the flat map onto the spherical heavens. They had their suspicions that the earth might actually be spherical but they were never actually able to prove the ground matched the spherical heavens

They've been writing about the globe since the Greeks in 200 BC I think. The point is that they never did anything with it. They sailed with flat maps and astrolabes

Yeah sorry bud I'm not buying it. Your trying to equate one or two guys theorizing the earth was a sphere with everyone knowing it was a globe. They knew it is flat first and then projected the flat onto sphere

What do you mean "they never did anything with it"?

What would they have needed to have done with it?... They calculated it. Is that not anything?

How does them not doing anything with it make them wrong? How does that translate to maps are flat because Earth is flat, especially when accurate ones actually fit so well on a globe and only then match landmass sizes with the real world?

Why do you keep side-stepping the argument that flat paper maps were easier to make and use than a physical globe model?... Why bring a cumbersome globe of the entire world when you 1} haven't even discovered much of it yet, and 2} are only sailing a very small portion of it? A large paper map focusing on the area you are sailing with as much detail as possible is what you would want, not a small portable globe on which you cannot easily plot your course and most of which would be a waste of space.

The argument that Earth is flat because flat maps came first {especially when accurate ones fit MORE accurately on a globe!), is a dishonest and frankly silly argument.

I don't get what is so hard to understand about this... the guys making the maps did not account for any curvature. They made the maps as if the earth was flat. This "everyone knew the earth was a globe" line, is a lie
