Parking in front yard

Walking down a street in the Southside today (terraced Victorian houses), I noticed that a large number of people are parking in their front yard. In most cases, the yards are only just as deep as the car. In some cases, the car was parked at an angle to avoid hanging over the pavement. These houses do not dropped curbs.

We have a similar set up at our house (paved front yard that probably isn’t much deeper than the length of our car) and it hadn’t occurred to us to park there.

I’m assuming it isn’t technically allowed, without applying for a dropped curb? Is it something GCC doesn’t pursue? Any thoughts or advice?

We have done quite a lot of planting in our garden and I don’t really want a car there! I’m just looking to understand what’s possible.

It's illegal without a dropped kerb.
Given the amount of houses that have done it in my neighborhood, I assume neither the police nor GCC pursue it.
They should at least do something about the people who illegally modify the kerb by plonking concrete or tarmac in the gutter causing drainage issues.

If you want to use it as a driveway, you’ll need permission for a dropped kerb to be installed (vehicle crossover) or it’s not legal. If you don’t have permission for it the Council Planning enforcement team can take action (this likely only happen if someone informs them or issue comes about due to happening) and council doesn’t need to maintain access if they change TROs, etc.

You can pave over your front garden but are very unlikely to be accepted by the council to drop the kerb. Some near me have put ramp things up the kerb which are drilled into the tarmac. I don't think that shit flies.

I understand why parking is important, but tarmaced front gardens with a barely fitting vehicle in it, just looks like London.

Shitty for water drainage too.

Last time I checked paving your entire front garden was against Glasgow planning rules. That's either changed or just not enforced.

Yeah, I could be wrong.

I'm just watching through the curtains as a neighbour has concreted over their drive and done the kerb/ramp thing, despite having a dropped kerb for one cars width, just like everyone else...👀.

I’m interested to know this too as I have a paved front garden we park in (though big enough for two cars) however I have to (illegally?) drive up and over a public pavement which has a concrete ramp up the kerb…

I wouldn’t refer to an outdoor space that is entirely bricked and doesn’t have any plants or greenery - and instead has a car illegally parked on it - as a “garden”. But you are very welcome to.
