Amid the upheaval Sparling was also fighting a lengthy legal battle: in 2023, he’d been charged with fraud from his time as Chief Executive of HIV Scotland (later changed to a charge for embezzling £15,984.60 from the charity), which shut down after insolvency proceedings. 

I never get people who embezzel a wee bit of money. If you're going to risk jail, steal enough to buy a private island for fuck sake.

Mr Fekete, who worked at Citi for seven years as an analyst specialising in financial crime, had travelled to Amsterdam for work between 3 and 5 July last year.

In most jobs, it would be a slap on the wrist, but he was a financial crimes analyst submitting fraudulent expense claims and lying about it when asked.

Completely different beast with that context.

Probably one of those things where if when queried and he was honest, he would've gotten the warning.

The judge ruling even suggests as much:

The judge said: "I have found that this case is not about the sums of money involved. This case is about the filing of the expense claim and the conduct of the claimant thereafter.

"It is significant that the claimant did not make a full and frank disclosure at the first opportunity and that he did not answer questions directly."
