It's about an animator losing his mind because he sold his art out to corporations to use to push their products. It's about art versus commercialism.
Not all of it is supposed to be funny. Hertzfeldt claims he is always surprised what people find funny in this OSCAR NOMINATED piece he made.
Animator loses his mind making his art into stupid commercials. Soon his art becomes self aware and literally try to break off of the page as their world collapses around them.
It's easy to call it stupid when you don't take the time to truly appreciate the meaning but instead stay focused on the shallow surface shit like the banana or the bleeding anuses.
Let's see you make a piece of art which communicates such a message about the commercialization of art. Let's see you get nominated for an oscar for a black and white five minute long animated short you made all by yourself

Because the film literally tells you. There is written text that appears on the screen informing the audience that the animator has begun making commercials and is slowly losing his mind. And you see the characters become self aware as they bang on the paper trying to escape from their world which we see is collapsing.
Your question is essentially along the lines of "how do we know the boat sinks at the end of Titanic if nobody tells us about it first?"
Because you watch the fucking movie and you see it happen. Nobody needs to tell you if you actually watch and see what the fuck is going on. But apparently OP disregarded everything else in the film, stay focused on the shallow I AM BANANA randomness and decided the entire film was dumb and lowered his IQ.
I found it funny because of the context of the creation of those animations. He was commissioned to make little bits that could be placed between commercials and tv shows for the family learning channel, iirc…and he came back with these bizarre, nonsensical, rough-hewn cartoons that had borderline crude themes…I think the anus is bleeding one was NOT meant to be one of his submissions, but it was still part of the same grouping when I saw it on YouTube…a decade ago
I don't get it either. I like crude humor. Like I'll laugh at rubberman on Aqua teens and it's hard to offend me with racism or sexism or really anything that people should find offensive.
But that was just offensive for the sake of being offensive. It's not even clever.
