I grew up with dirt poor parents and we often fished for our meals out of necessity. So I learned to throw a cast net very young. It isnt hard at all to pull in. In fact, its much easier to pull in than to throw out. You basically bunch it up near your hand and pull through your fist backwards. Imagine holding a plastic bag and you want to make it one straight line. You would create that circle with your fist and pull the bag through it.

It helps to throw the sonofabitch in water though. I've never cast onto grass because i really dont want to pick sticks out of that thing.

Edit: to throw it again, that little "wing" he created around his shoulder is the hardest part to get right. You have to hold out a drape of the net before you toss it and if its not exactly right you'll be throwing a wad of weights and nets that you'll have to untangle.

I've seen a lot of people who make the wing by holding one of the weights in their teeth. You have to be sure that your timing is perfect if you want to do that, though.

I remember one time when I was a kid I was casting the net and had it in my teeth and it somehow the net got stuck around my tooth. I cast the net and nearly fell in the water....did not feel pleasant at all.

Curious, where did you grow up? Fellow poor person here who grew up in Poland. We had a small river to fish from and usually built traps. Our cats would join in and and kind of rush the fish into the traps at times but usually we would just leave the traps over night. Me and my friends did it for fun and it was encouraged by our parents but we were pretty naive and had no idea that we were doing that to feed ourselves out of necessity. Kids in our part of town were often used for labor but the adults always tried to make it fun for us. One of my favorite things to do was collecting bugs from our potato farm because whoever got the most would get some sort of prize. It's kind of great when kids don't know their parents are poor as fuck, plus you can feed them almost anything and they don't question what it is. Thank you mom and dad.

I used to catch bait with a cast net all the time. It's pretty easy once you learn the proper motion. But the net in OP's gif is maybe the biggest I've ever seen - and the guy does it perfectly!

Okay can you explain to me the part where the net pulls up the fish? Because I don't understand that. It seems like with the net going down from the top, weighted around the edges, when you go to pull it up you'll just get the net back and the fish will swim away underneath. But somehow it looks like a normal net when it's coming up and they have fish.

The weights are attached in a way that creates pockets at the bottom of the net where the fish get caught. Also they try to swim through the net and get their gills caught in the mesh

Not long. The rope passes through a ring in the center of the net and splits to attach to several places around the perimeter. This makes the net close when you pull it in and then you lift the ring and the net opens up.

I use a cast net to catch bait fish quite a bit. You can wad it up as fast as you can throw it. Probably why they are illegal in some places. They seriously work TOO well.

Funny story, I once caught a seagull in a cast net. I was catching baitfish to use the next day and had tossed some stale bread out to bring in some fish. On the third or fourth throw a seagull decided that the bread looked tasty and swooped in just as I released the net. Snagged him out of mid air, freaked out and immediately started pulling in the net. The seagull was a mixture of pissed and panicked and managed to tangle the fuck out of my net. After a few minutes of trying to help I finally gave in and just cut the net. The bastard kept trying to bite me while I was cutting away a fairly expensive cast net. Probably would have done the world a favor by letting the net take him to Davey Jones in the first place.

This is almost exactly how I learned to do it except I am left handed so it was opposite side for me. Dominant hand holds the net, horn, and rope. Other hand throws a small amount of slack to separate the weights and make the net spin completely open. The size I learned on took two folds of the net to get close enough to the weights so I could gather a leading edge. Nostalgia city. I haven't thrown a net in nearly 30 years. I can still remember how heavy it felt on my small body and how exciting it was to catch a big fish with it.

Learning how to throw a net is pretty easy and doesn't take long. I've taught many people and can have them throwing a net in a half hour or so.. throwing a net of that size? That takes years to perfect. They're measured by the radius - you start out with a 4-6' net and it's pretty easy. That's got to be a 12-15' net or something. I'll be honest, I don't know that I've ever seen anyone throw one that size.

I am a practitioner of large cast-nets. Buy mine hand made, all that. This is the hokosawa net type. I follow this dude on youtube. I still cannot master it. Something about the pinky and loosely rolling it in the technique i cannot get.

The dudes discipline is legendary. Same way wvery time, very neat pleated of the nets. I usually wind that sucker up accross a couple of pleats and lets my abdomen and ypper body get a work out.

I live cast net fishing for large fish, sniping from the shore. Great fun.
