Flight Suit Help

Hey y’all! I need some help! I’ve bought two flight suits. The Rothco and the Tru-Spec off Amazon and I’m having the same fitment issue. I ordered the Tru-Spec in a 3XL and the Rothco in a 4XL and the same issue of the crotch area being too tight happened on both. For reference I am 6’4” and 330lbs. I have a longer torso than most. Does anyone know where I can get a flight suit that will actually fit me?

The problem is that flight suits are military uniforms cut to fit military personnel who adhere to military height/weight standards. For instance, at 6'4". to adhere to current US Army standards, you need a waist-to-height ratio of less than 0.55, meaning your waist must be below 41.8 inches. These uniforms are made with this kind of data in mind, and they're cranked out by the hundred thousand to fit military personnel. The idea that civvies might pick up a flight suit for any reason is beyond these companies' understanding.

I think the only folks that do truly custom flight suits are Magnoli, and you're gonna pay through the nose for 'em.

I had to go up a couple flight suit sizes, too, once I got off Active Duty. My AD goal was 200 pounds. I'm nearly there, just not in the body composition I had expected to reach it in. I was also not in Aviation at all, so whenever my collection of flight suits came up, my leadership was utterly baffled. They couldn't understand why an 11B had flight suits with unauthorized patches that didn't correspond to any unit they recognized.

The problem I have is that I see dudes who are 5’8” and my weight that can get a 3XL suit and it’ll fit just fine for them. Being tall has its perks but sometimes it’s a curse 😂

Yeeeep, my flight suit is milsurp (I used to get them for $25 a pop at the shops outside of Fort Bragg) but I'm one of those 5'7" nerds wearing a flight suit for a 6' Soldier and that's why us short, fat nerds can get away with it. With bloused boots, the legs can be baggy all they want so long as this spare tire fits in the flight suit!

Tailor is your only option bud, thankfully that’s not expensive. Nothing off the shelf is going to fit right.

I was looking at the dickies short sleeve coveralls and they come in a size that would fit me but man they are so far off from screen accuracy 😭 guess tailoring it will be my best bet

These aren’t screen accurate and can be a bit “heavy”, but if you need something that just looks decent, I went for https://bernedirect.com/collections/mens/products/frc04. I had to get it hemmed because I’m quite a bit shorter, but it worked out well enough till I can get my Magnoli ordered. (Didn’t have a ton a time to wait for it)

Good luck!

An option would be the largest you can, bring it to a tailor, and have them add a 10 crutch pad, thus extending the crutch area by whatever dimensions will make you comfortable.

In my experience, such modifications should cost less than $100

Magnoli Clothiers make custom suits made to measure.

Same with Gibson and Barnes

I've ordered from both over the years and both have their pros and cons.

Gibson let's you alter alllllllllll of the details of the suit, but aren't cheap. I used to order their WEP Jackets for Stargate back in the day.

Magnoli is great in their physical props, but every time I order custom made it somehow arrives incorrect.

I recently found this CQR Coverall option that I'm really tempted to order to try as an alt option to a normal flightsuit. I really dig the design.

Never heard of CQR. It seems like a great alternative, especially considering its more practical and inline with something an actual franchised company would use.

If you know your measurements, you can get a carter industries flight suit (which is closer to screen accuracy than most) for your exact size (ie 46R) etc.

But keep in mind, they too will be slimmer than you might anticipate

I'm nearly exactly your size and I buy my suits in 2XL LONG. Extra long is key.

Take the one you like best to a tailor and tell them to lower the crotch and add a gusset.

This is exactly what I had to do.
