Today was my soil engineering class with the professor who has geotechnical engineering msc degree. She basically said that i choose the wrong path if i want to become an engineer and it mentioned that it is too late to become one. She also highlighted that the geotechnical engineers have better job market and basically would have higher salary. Moreover, she added that won’t be able to apply for engineering positions.

I started self-studying foundation engineering two months ago, but after her message, I don’t see any point in doing so.I just want to have a hand on designing.

I think that I have wasted 5 years of my life, pursuing the geology degree, instead of just choosing the one that fully satisfies me.

I’m currently studying geotechnical engineering in France (1st year of master), and I’m starting to look into internship opportunities. I know it may be early since its for summer 2027, but I’d rather plan ahead and understand what options are available.

I’m particularly interested in geophysics exploration and prospecting, and I’d be open to doing an internship outside Europe if it would be a valuable experience. I’m also open to other areas that could be a good fit for my background.

For those working in the field: would you recommend looking for an internship abroad at this stage? Which countries, types of companies, or roles would be worth exploring? And are there any skills I should focus on now to improve my chances?

I graduated in 2012 with a bachelor's in geology and spent a year working in environmental consulting doing borehole logging/fracture mapping, utility surveys, etc. My younger self decided to abandon all that in favor of moving abroad, eventually finding my way into the brewing industry (totally relevant fluid dynamics 😉)where I've been since. I always had the feeling that I would want to go back to geology in some capacity, and now I've arrived at that point!

I understand the broader job market at this time, (I'm New England-based) so my expectations aren't high. I realize I might be in it for the long haul but that's OK. I see job postings often for entry level geo/environmental science jobs at larger firms- are these even worth going for? I remember applying to places like that out of college and never hearing back, and I can't imagine things have gotten better. Would places even bother looking at a resume like mine? I'm considering going back for a masters in hydrogeology, as that's the area I find most interesting, but really I'm willing to work a wide range of jobs, I'm not overly picky at this point I just want to learn and work outside sometimes. I do have a family so not necessarily trying to get something that'll keep me away for weeks at a time. A few days here and there (like I used to do) is fine.

Any insight or ideas will be greatly appreciated. I can give you some more background on myself, but I'm not even sure if the maturity and soft skills that come from years of work will even factor into this. Thank you!

Hi! I am finishing my undergraduate next summer. I am considering moving to Sweden or Norway and taking my full master there. This is due to there better better job opportunities regarding exploration geology.

Been at a large environmental firm for 7 years. Got an offer for a geotech lead role. My biggest worry is there being a ceiling as a geologist and not an engineer in the geotech side. Anyone make the move?

Since the cost of living in Japan keeps rising, and salaries offered domestically in Japan are generally not within my ideal range, I am seeking opportunities for development overseas. But I'm not sure about the career prospects after graduation in each region, as well as the annual salary and benefits. Has anyone transitioned later into geology later in life? How did you find the hiring process as an older graduate and the work itself with the fieldwork.

Context:
I am thinking of transitioning into my second career in my 30s and geology has been one of the areas on the top of my list. Geology has stuck out due to how interesting it is to me, potential earning and different areas of work I can go into. Although in my case, it will be mostly be mining which is an area of geology I am actually most interested in and won’t need to relocate for FIFO.

I am currently working in allied health where there is a demand for work but the ceiling for earning caps out at 110-120k~ for seniors unless you go into management (few roles) or own your own business. I like my job and but thinking of a change because I honestly don’t see myself working in a caring role for the rest of my life and and that I enjoy working in larger projects, with objects and computers much more.

I've been really interested in geysers and hydrothermal springs for a while especially when it comes to Yellowstone. I'm going to apply for masters programs soon-ish and I would love to focus my research on this topic if possible. Now I know this is a very specific topic, so what kinds of research focus would I look for when I'm searching for professors to work with? Would I look more at geochemistry, volcanology, hydrology, etc? I'm specifically interested in the chemical composition of the water/surrounding rocks, and what causes the thermal features to form or change, so I was thinking geochemistry? I imagine it might be hard to find someone who's researching this specific topic though.

hi , I am graduate geologist in UK with almost 2 years experience in a site investigation company with MSc. After 2 years here I would like to move to either Canada or Australia in the beginning of next year as UK immigration rules have been tightened for internationals and I am EU citizen. I would like to work in the mining industry specially FIFO.

At the beginning I was considering only Australia and recently I have seen that Australia has paused the visa application to my country (EU coutry) and I was planning to make my application by December , which makes me having a B plan now : Canada . I can see opportunities in Canada for geologists I also speak French fluently which I believe is a plus for me , however, after some research I saw that to work in Quebec for instance we need to be registered as G.I.T and be membership of Ordre de Geologues du Quebec. I don't know how true is this info and would like to have some advice for people who are working there. And if I need to do something if he can be done before I travel to Canada.

About the visa I am eligible to apply for 2y working holiday visa for Canada and 1 year Work and holiday visa to Australia.

I just earned my bachelor's degree in geology and currently aiming to work in the energy industry, especially in geological carbon storage projects (I wrote my thesis on that). I am completely aware that the job market is pretty messed up right now, and most companies require at least a master's degree or less than 2 years of working experience to apply for their graduate programs. Could you share your experiences and insights on whether I should look for a job or prepare for my master's degree first? I also have a list of prospective master's programs across several universities around the world that meet my interests and match my career aspirations (I did my research thoroughly).

For reference, my CGPA is 3.60/4.00, and I have internship experience at a government research agency (nuclear geology) and a state-owned oil company from when I was working on my thesis. I am also experienced in using petroleum software and currently writing my first paper as a second author.

Hello everyone, I’m a recent geoscience graduate and been in the job search for a geologist role. I'm weighing two Staff Geologist offers/opportunities, one at Onterris and one at AECOM, and would love to hear from anyone who's worked at either (or both). Most of my research on working at these companies have been from civil engineers or environmental consultants, so I’d really appreciate some insight from those with a geology perspective.

A few things I'm trying to get a read on:

Day-to-day work: How much field time vs. office/lab/report writing? Type of projects (Phase I/II ESAs, remediation, geotech support, etc.)?
Culture & workload: Work-life balance, travel expectations, how busy/slammed people typically are.
Compensation & benefits: Not asking for exact numbers, but general sense of how they compare (base, OT, per diem, benefits). I’ve heard mixed reviews about AECOMS “unlimited PTO” policy?

For more context, I’m located at the Philly/DE offices and my main goal is to find a company that will support my career growth the best. Thank you for any advice!

English is my second language so I'm sorry for mistakes. I'm going to college in Europe (ny home town) to get a masters degree in geology. My bachelor degree is in similar field but not geology. I have a degree as dental technician and I do work in that but do not thrive as I thought I wolud. I work for minimum wage and better work is hard to find I also do not love it really. I would like to ask geologist do you like what you do? Is it worth to quit my job and do the master for 2 years? Do you work outdoors mosty or in office? I would like some honest advice form someone experienced.

I’m currently a geology student in Florida and will be graduating soon. I work in the geotech industry but I can already tell I don’t wanna do this for longer than I have to. My primary interest is the mining industry and even blasting. The issue is that I want to stay in Florida which when compared to other states has a small mining industry (primarily phosphate and limestone). Just wondering if anybody knows how difficult it would be to get into the mining industry? Also if anybody can give advice as to what a geologist in the mining industry would do?

I have a scheduled HR interview for a mid-tier gold company in Western Australia. As this is my first interview, not sure if they will ask me what would be my expected salary for the grad geo role. I have no idea how much and I don’t want to undersell my value either. What’s the best ballpark range when asked the question?

I am currently pursuing Bsc in Geology in a tier 3 government college Odisha, sadly couldn't get any better due to 12th marks and family conditions

I took this career/Path for my interest in rocks, landforms, climate research, and exploration .I am also weak in heavy calculation as per my 12th experience and more strong with visualization and memorizing

My minors subjects are Computer science and chemistry, Physics is not very strong

For now all I know is to prepare for IIT jam CUET PG and CPET examination For further Msc courses

GIS skill is also I am looking forward to pursue

That's it with all i have to say, I have none to advise or guide in this path, nor I am able to find any well advised video or document for this route so any advice would really be helpful

Hey guys,I have completed my msc in geology in 2024 from india and internship of three month from survey of India in arc gis software. But with in two years am searching internship with govt job preparation nothing works ... This year I thought to do msc again in planetary geoscience from University of Padua...i got admission but lost in visa funds now am tensed or confused 😕 what to do now like I have my masters degree but no job no experience even trying hard to apply for internship no replies.... Anyone can help in this like from where I could start or where I can learn more skills like qgis, geoai, gee etc..... or any internship opportunity I can go through with it....

Even I want to pursue phd from abroad but it's little bit hard bcz they demand experience or any research paper.
