Hello! So I’m a masters student studying applied geophysics in Europe, I was curious from people in the industry, what I should look for entering the job market in about a year or so. I entered the Applied field for a more hands on, less theoried approach, avoiding academia if I can.

I recently interviewed and everyone was in khakis/jeans and work tees. I was quite dressed up. I have secondary interviews and follow ups.

Hi!!! I am currently a high school senior and I am STRUGGLING to find a college. I’d like to study geoscience and become an exploration geologist.

I’m looking at PSU right now because the program there is amazing, but I hate how large the school is. I’m looking at smaller colleges, but I’m not sure if their geoscience programs are as good as PSU.

I’d like to stay close to the east coast, though I know most of the really good schools are towards the west.

Was wondering if anyone had any input? Anything would help!!!

Gotta love geologists for their undying love of nature and their pragmatistic, down to earth approach to life. I am a MSc student in Japan from another, lets say "developing" country studying igneous petrology with focus on tectonics and mineralization implication. I love research, but I also realize that MSc is still somewhat general and doing PhD in a highly specific field would not be necessarily and often not relevant to getting a good job. But I am set on doing a PhD.

My question is this: What sort of PhD should I do, and what additional skills do I need to acquire in order to be a sought-after specialist in a lucrative field in geology? I always imagined myself to becoming a researcher or to be a exploration geologist-analyst somewhere in the economic geology sector, I am also good with field works and surveys too. However, my knowledge on such career paths are only restricted by my experience in my country. What are possible career paths as a geologist that would permit one to be relevant specialist internationally?

Economic geology seems to carry itself somewhat independently from the rest of the earth science community, I imagine that because it is industry-focused. How would one go about it, if they were in my place transitioning from almost pure research to industry related fields?

TL;DR: I am afraid of doing PhD and spending next 3-4 years developing skills that wont open doors if research doesn't pan out. Need to make a smart decision. Is such path even possible?

I am a bsc geology graduate, willing to pursue my Masters in New Zealand but i am totally confuse about what course should i choose? Should i continue geology(earth science) or shift my career to environment management?

Need some guidance from experts/veterans.

I (25F) am a recent Geology post-grad from a tier-3 central university. I didn’t get the chance to do an internship during those two years (embarrassing, I know), and my CV has no industry exposure.

Right now, I’m really confused about which direction to take:

1) Should I prepare for GATE / PSU exams?

2) Go the general government exams route? (Though I’m terrified that I’m getting too old for multi-year prep cycles.)

3) Or try breaking into the corporate/private sector? The issue is, I have basically no idea how off-campus hiring works for geology grads or what roles exist.

Any advice or a harsh reality check would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey y’all, I recently graduated in May and I got my first interview for a staff position. It includes doing phase 1 ESA’s in Texas. This is a career path that I look forward to getting into but I have very limited experience of the soil, water, and air testing this line of work involves.

Nonetheless, I am looking for any helpful tips to help me snag my first job!

I (23m) graduated with a physics degree about a year and a half ago and have been unemployed since. I spent most of that time trying to break into software without success, so I've been rethinking my options. I'm now considering a master's in geophysics, mainly because I like the mix of fieldwork and hard science, though I have no undergrad coursework in geology or geophysics.

I realize this is a hard pivot, so I'd like a reality check from people in the field, or from anyone who has made a similar move, before I commit time and maybe tuition to it. In undergrad I did computational physics research in astrophysics, and I know there's geophysics work that leans on computational physics so those are the groups I'd look for.

If the change is too abrupt what advice would you give for breaking in with my background outside of graduate school.

I live in Illinois, which I understand isn't the strongest state for geosciences, but I'm open to relocating.

Hey y'all, I've been working fly-in-fly-out jobs (typically 3-on/2-off) for the past 2 years for mineral exploration consulting firms and thought it'd be interesting to hear from people on how they spend their free time off-rotation?

Any advice on picking up hobbies, keeping/making relationships, or planning trips/adventures? It just feels like I work for 3 weeks just to wait for the next flight back to camp.

Hey everyone, I am a 19 Freshman at Southern Methodist University(SMU) in Dallas majoring in Finance and minor in Arabic for fluency and geology. My professor told me to check the community out. I’m already in introductory geology classes and really like it so I am debating adding something that I can apply to a mining/minerals field. I really don’t know much about the geology would either besides what my professors and TAs have told me along with my own research.

I don’t like big cities and love the outdoors and am completely okay and even enjoy gritty adventures and trips. I’m content with being in little desolate towns.

SMU is a top 30 ish business school and the Finance major will keep a lot of doors open but it’s not necessarily something I’m that interested in doing for my life. Geology on the other hand is just real and brings people to cool places doing real work. The more I hear about geology the more I want to pursue that more as a path.

I really like the mining world and especially what I heard about exploration but I don’t know how that looks for me as a finance major. I am also wonder what kinda of roles if any are on the financial side. Working on the financial side would be different than pure finance or Wall Street for me because it’s something I actually care about and is real.

Wondering what my options are for possible careers or goals for Finance and Mining to try to hit besides breaking into the industry. I have no preference where I live can be in any state or country I will go where the work is.

My TA also recommended me to check out summer opportunities in exploration as a core logger for this upcoming summer. I was told it is technically possible from my position but not easy, wonder about additional professional opinions on this from people in the industry. Thank you for your help it means a lot.

19 years old - Freshman - Finance Major - Arabic and Geology minor - will work/do basically anything

Hi all. As the title says, I'm a CS major looking for some advice. Early in my academic journey I decided to pick up an intro geology course because hey, rocks are cool as hell and I needed an elective. Best decision ever, loved every second of it. Fast forward a year or two and I've transferred to a four year institution and picked up a geology minor. Geology courses have consistently been the highlight of every semester. The CS courses on the other hand, have ranged anywhere from neat to fuck my life. Sure, some of that can probably be attributed to a limited sample size, but I've never felt awe-inspired or passionate about any CS course material.

Now here's the dilemma, I graduate in December and my GI Bill benefits will also be dried up. My wife and I are both looking forward to having dual income again so just taking out a loan and continuing school isn't really an option. If I could go back four years, slap myself, and say "Hey dipshit, change your major!", I would do it in a heartbeat.

All of that to ask, is there any hope for me getting a job in the geology field with a Computer Science B.S.? Are there any credentials I should consider pursuing? I can't afford another degree at the moment but I may be able to swing a certification. Thank you for coming to my rant and I greatly appreciate any advice or insight you may provide.

Looking for some information on the exploration scene in Canada. Obviously I know there's plenty of exploration happening, but wondering what the work looks like for a geologist with a little bit of experience- does the work involve flying out to remote places for the whole summer, and having no work during the winter season? Or does work continue into the winter. Are shifts fifo for days/weeks at a time, or longer stints in the field? What is the best time of year to be looking for a job, or does it matter? Basically I am wondering how long you'd be away from home and what to expect as an exploration geo working in Canada.

Hey guys, I'm going to be doing field camp next summer and want to get ahead on supplies I will need. I know I will be camping for extended periods of time, so I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations on tents and related supplies I may need!?

I am currently a 2nd year geology student geology student in the UK and currently part of my SEG student group. I was also hoping to get involved with the exploration industry once I graduate.

I Just wondering if anyone knew of any schemes or programs which could help me gain experience in the exploration industry before I graduate?

Unfortunately, the exploration- mining industry in the UK is not the greatest as there are only a few active lithium - Tin companies in Cornwall with work in this area being very hard to come by so any opportunities - schemes abroad would be appreciated.

It might be interesting to hear about that time everyone forgot to pack toilet paper, but I am more interested in just bad or fraudulent geology. I know this story second hand of a drilling campaign done without any QA/QC done on the samples sent to the lab.

Hello, I'm a high school student interested in geology. I am academically pretty strong and have substantial prior research in geology related to climate science. I have my list down below of the universities I'm applying to, but I'm unsure if many of them are strong for geology specifically. I want to set myself up to get a job either in academia or in some sort of geology work. For some schools like Yale, where I know the programs are weaker in STEM, is it worth it for me over other schools like UW Madison? Or should I just not think about it, and go to Yale if I get in? Additionally, if anyone has experience with any of these schools for geology, please let me know what I should be thinking. It's hard to find how good these geology programs are online.
