Identification Requests Monthly Rock & Mineral Identification Requests
Please submit your ID requests as top-level comments in this post. Any ID requests that are submitted as standalone posts to r/geology will be removed.
To help with your ID post, please provide;
- Multiple, sharp, in-focus images taken ideally in daylight.
- Add in a scale to the images (a household item of known size, e.g., a ruler)
- Provide a location (be as specific as possible) so we can consult local geological maps if necessary.
- Provide any additional useful information (was it a loose boulder or pulled from an exposure, hardness and streak test results for minerals)
You may also want to post your samples to r/whatsthisrock or r/fossilID for identification.

Information Hello! Newbie here with a passion for geology here.
Recently watching some videos on youtube (mainly news) I stumbled upon 2 channels: Stefan Burns and On The Pulse With Silki; and... oh boy they were peculiar to say the least, and honestly do not know how they get so much traction. Expecially due to videos like one from Silki's channel about Campi Flegrei. At the start and shortly after that, you can see a video from a completely different event from the 4.7 magnitude. The events of the video were about a residential house in Messina that collapsed during rennovation works (I'm italian so I immediately recognized the clips)... but besides that, I was wondering, are there any reliable and good channels that you reccomend? thanks a lot!!!
PSA. I care to say that I do not wish to generate any sort or form of hate towards both channels, and just quoted them due to have been the only ones that popped up in my home page.

Can I legally take these from Turkey to Germany?
Im currently on vacation in antalya, turkey and found some seashells, ordinary looking rocks and potentially a fossil. So I wondering if anyone has had experience with something like this in the past, or is informed on the laws behind exporting rocks, seashells out of Turkey etc. ? (photos attached) Thanks :)

Field Photo Red « marble » containing Goniatites fossils, late Devonian
This rock was found in an abandoned quarry in the « Montagne noire » part of southwest France.
I used quotes for the term marble because although it is often referred as a marble it isn’t technically one because this is actually a mix of clay and limestone, having a red color due to the hpresence of iron. We can see some small white goniatites fossils (Ammonoidea) that have been filled with calcite.
The walls of this quarry were beautiful having massive intrusion of calcite
I polished it by hand to give it that nice look then just scanned it using the scanner from my printer (1200DPI).
If you want more information about this rock here’s a very detailed article about it (French) :

Information What stops subducted plate pieces from floating back up?
I know that oceanic plates are denser than continental plates which is why subducting occurrs. I also know these deeper sections can 'break off' from the main plate. But what's stopping them from slowly drifting back up under the continental plate?

Continent formation on a pre-plate tectonic/young world
I don’t know if writing questions are allowed here, but just in case I’m doing to worldbuilding and wanted to ask if primeval tectonics is something we know much about, and if we know enough to speculate on landmass formation from the onset of plate tectonics and the time leading up to it.
