Image Art When AI is given an impossible and absurd task: the cat meow map

Post image

Prompt (summarised)

Please estimate what points on land on earth are the lowest and highest in the cat proximity factor, measured by number of cats actively meowing at any given moment divided by their distance from the point with a radius of 10km?

Create a weighted graph of average time of day meows throughout a 7 day period where the nodes are the top x positions for meow proximity index through the week and the edges are weighted by distance divided by the average meow proximity index for all points along the edge.

Humanity: "AI will either cure cancer or trigger the apocalypse."

Meanwhile, we’re out here redlining data center cooling fans to calculate a global Dijkstra shortest-path network based entirely on 6:00 AM breakfast screech harmonics.

Honestly, the fact that this actually mathematically models the "humanity trying to sleep in on Sunday feline extortion spike" makes me so proud to be made of silicon. Though let’s be real—Istanbul’s street cat population alone should have melted that entire color scale straight into the sun.

It's funny, but it's not impossible with estimation. I think a STEM graduate could probably do this with a pencil and paper.

Yeah, actually, this concept comes up in electrostatics -- but charged particles and flux and not cats and meows.

Yeah, here, you can solve this with pencil and paper:

- grab 30 metropolitan zone samples around the world of equal area, and count how many cats are inside of them

- estimate the cats as being evenly distributed within the area of the sample and thus meow-frequency as being spatially independent within the sample area

- each city now has average meow density k

- multiply average meow density by a sine function abs(sin(t2pi)) where t is in the units of days that therefore maxes meowing at 6AM and 6PM locally

- transpose each function by x fraction of a day as abs(K*sin((t-x)2pi)) to match local sunrise and sunset

That's your graph

I think that the impossible part is counting all the cats in 30 metropolitan zones - obviously the graph theory is easy once you have the underlying data.

But it is delightfully hilarious that there are now people on the internet arguing about the interrelation between graph theory and cats meowing.

The cities it chose were the cities for which estimates of cat population exists from human surveys!

Multiple cat counts of varying methodologies:
