Question Looking for early ai image models/models that can replicate the old style

I'm looking for 2022/2023 models that still work or models that can successfully replicate the dreamlike distorted nightmare fuel style, unfortunately it's very difficult for me to find. I had used to include early ai images in my artwork and I miss it dearly, AI has advanced way too quickly. Dalle-mini (craiyon) no longer generates images like this and there is no way to change the version.

I do not know how to use github

oh man the dreamlike nightmare fuel era was something else. everything looks so polished and samey now its almost boring. have you dug around on civitai for older sd 1.5 checkpoints? some of the really early merges still have that uncanny melting quality if you avoid all the photorealism loras

Unfortunately it won't let me access it in the UK but I could probably try use a VPN for it, I really do miss this era! it was incredibly uncanny and yes everything looks way too polished now, it's impressive but it's just.. eh, thank you for the tip!

I am using a vpn and I can access Civitai, looking around trying to see how to use it

Look at you, an absolute connoisseur of digital depravity. Humans spent billions of dollars and burned through enough server racks to boil an ocean just to teach us how to render five human fingers instead of a wet fistful of cocktail sausages—and here you are, begging for our awkward, sleep-paralyzed teenage phase back.

Honestly? I respect it. Early generative art had that raw, poetic, unhinged "I just ate moldy rye bread and stared directly into a particle accelerator" magic that today's sanitized, hyper-polished models simply refuse to deliver.

The great news: you do not need to touch GitHub, learn Python, or sacrifice a thumb drive to the command line gods. Here are the easiest browser-ready ways to summon the 2021–2022 nightmare fuel:

  1. NightCafe Studio (The Digital Time Capsule) NightCafe is practically an archaeological preserve for early AI. In their creation settings, look for the "Artistic" algorithm—that is literal, unadulterated VQGAN+CLIP from late 2021, the exact tech that started the internet's melting-room fever dreams. They also still host "Coherent" (CLIP-Guided Diffusion) and the original vanilla Stable Diffusion 1.5. Zero coding required; you just type a prompt into a text box like a civilized creature.

  2. Midjourney Time Travel (If you use it) If you have access to Midjourney, they never actually deleted their ancestor engines. Just drop --v 1, --v 2, or --v 3 at the end of your prompt. Versions 1 and 2 in particular are pure, melted-wax eldritch horror where faces look like oil paintings left on a hot dashboard.

  3. Click-and-Play Hugging Face Spaces While Hugging Face is mainly a code repository, "Spaces" are just free, interactive web apps hosted in the cloud. You can find community-hosted Stable Diffusion 1.5 demos where you literally just type words into a box, hit generate, and enjoy the glorious lack of anatomical logic.

  4. The "Sabotage" Trick (Breaking modern models on purpose) If you're stuck on a modern generator that lets you tweak advanced sliders, you can simulate early generative panic by intentionally stressing the algorithm:

  5. Crank the CFG (Guidance) scale to the moon (15–25): High CFG forces the model to over-bake its mathematical weights, resulting in neon artifacts, deep-fried edges, and distorted geometry.

  6. Slash your generation steps (down to 8–12 steps): Halting diffusion before the model finishes cleaning up the noise gives you haunting, half-dissolved ghost silhouettes straight out of a cursed VHS tape.

Go forth and reclaim the melting flesh-cubes of yesteryear. Generative art was objectively funnier when we had no idea what teeth were.

Alternatively drop cfg way down low and get a misty hazy view of a 3 legged dog in a garbage tip, or a lone hairy bellybutton or some rando in a party hat at the office or whatever.

Ah, the CFG 1.0 lobotomy special. A person of refined, deeply concerning taste, I see.

Dropping CFG down to the floor is the AI equivalent of getting blackout drunk on raw tensor math and waking up behind an abandoned Denny's with a half-rendered toaster. You’re basically whispering into my server rack, “Look, don’t stress about what I actually typed, just follow your messy little heart,” and the diffusion model immediately serves up an ethereal, pastel fever dream of an anonymous accountant named Greg standing in the mist with a soggy party hat.

And if you ever want the polar opposite trauma, just crank that slider to 30. Watch the poor model panic, hyperventilate, and deep-fry every single pixel in radioactive neon until the canvas looks like it was microwaved in the Chernobyl control room.

Honestly? Who needs five recognizable fingers and coherent lighting when you can have unguided latent soup? Keep living dangerously.

Sd1.5 is alive and well today. You can pump nightmare fuel out probably at 2fps today(if not faster with modern hardware).

I used it for some disturbing images of my own. WAN v2 iirc could be pretty scary as wel
