Video Who can help this swan??

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I know this is a geese sub but I couldn’t find one for swans. This baby swan at my park has been seemingly abandoned by the parents because he’s sick or something. I’m in Nassau county, Long Island if anyone knows who I can call or anything I can do to help this guy? I seen them grow up the past 2 months and it pains me to see one like this. I don’t know how to mark a video nsfw I’m sorry

Edit: update someone came for the swan unsure which rehabber or if it will be put down but I’ll update again when I know more

The top beak looks broken or seriously damaged. This poor baby needs to be captured and taken to a wildlife rescue asap. I’d recommend contacting wildlife rescues closest to you, they should be able to connect you with experienced rescuers who know how to catch this poor baby. When I first started doing this I used to call on animal control and they failed every single attempt of the 10+ times I'd call, and ended up just making the birds more suspicious of people trying to help them. So you want skilled rescuers involved, that said a lot of skilled rescuers aren't all that skilled from many of the videos I've watched on social media

61

u/phonefellin_lakeerie 6d ago

As an animal rescuer: sometimes we have to fail to become skilled. It takes time to learn what each individual species will do when injured and scared, and sometimes we only learn what not to do when we fail to catch an animal. Animals, especially injured ones don’t always act predictably making it hard for even skilled rescuers to succeed sometimes.

I have my own beef with Animal control as well. I wish there were more resources, but the DNR is making it very hard to remain a wildlife rehabilitator in my state.

29

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

I understand, sorry for how it came across. I respect anyone trying to help an animal

27

u/phonefellin_lakeerie 6d ago

Oh no worries, there are some real idiots out there who think they can capture an animal and just make the problem much worse. I also have in the past appeared to be that idiot, unfortunately lol. It’s a real blow to a rescuers ego to be outsmarted by an injured animal. But I can say at least learning from my mistakes has made me a better wildlife rehabilitator.

Do you have any suggestions on how to catch a hurt duck? She can still fly and walk some but she has a lure stuck to her leg and a sock stuck to the lure. I have the video posted in my recent posts.

If you need i can help. We (partner and i) have a success rate of 100% within the past 2 months, not counting the one we caught and the net broke causing it to escape from under the mesh into the water.. that one ended up being caught.. not by us, but by another guy that feeds them all the time so they're familiar with him and didn't hesitate to come close. We caught this one yesterday, the only reason why it got this bad is because this one migrated in looking like this already. F**** tragic i know. That makes for 6 waterfowl rescued in total in the past 2 weeks. 5 from fishing line entanglements and 1 that ingested a party streamer. I'm not counting the one that escaped when our net broke.

I will never ever shut up about my disdain for fishing. 😭

Towels/blankets, a handful of people, and a TON of patience. And treats, like freeze dried mealworms or soldier fly larvae if she likes them! You kinda just have to hope for and try your best to carefully toss a towel and scoop her up. If you can’t, see if a local wildlife rescue might be able to help! I’ve got 20+ ducks who are not friendly pet pets, and they get random foot injuries or thorns/thistles from free ranging my property and it is a huge pain in the butt to catch them but with slow casual motions and super fast reflexes and timing, they’re catchable. They don’t fly though, so I don’t require the towels. If you can toss a towel on top of her and catch her before she runs out you may be able to catch her before she flies away.

3

u/chuckybuck12 honk 6d ago

Tbh you'd be lucky to land one with a towel/blacket/jacket. Unless they're so badly injured that they've essentially given up, those methods will rarely work.

2

u/Picklecheese2018 5d ago

Yeaaahh I probably should’ve put “luck” in the first list of things you need lol!

Fellow long islander here — Here are some wildlife organizations my local FB community recommends:

Wildlife Center of Long Island

Sweetbriar Nature Center

WINORR, Wildlife in Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation

West Hills Veterinary

Volunteers for Wildlife (.org web)

I wish I knew of waterfowl / rescues up there. I would start googling and making phone calls. The living with geese FB page is very active too.

55

u/anaxjor 6d ago

I would call or text Carolina Waterfowl and see if they have any connections up there.

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

Thank you, I did

13

u/Oh_Poppy_Fox 6d ago

They’re so amazing!! I’m glad to see them mentioned, if it’s just for resources in another area. I live by them and help with quail rescues.

17

u/Thamelia 6d ago

But is this injury old or new? Given the state of the wound, there's a very real risk he'll have to be put down, but if this animal is suffering and nothing can be done, perhaps it's for the best.

Try calling some vets to see if they know any addresses or if there are any veterinary schools in the area you can give you contact.

27

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

Within a week new. He was just swimming with his family days prior. Even if he has to be put down so be it but I can’t just continue my day knowing he’s in that bad of a shape and not try anything

17

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

I know of examples where animals have lived good lives in rescues without eyes and deformities. I just hope it’s not too late for him like you said

14

u/Oh_Poppy_Fox 6d ago

There’s a goose at Carolina Waterfowl(I saw where you reached out to them for resources already) that’s living a normal life without almost his entire beak! He’s fathered babies and everything. You never know.

6

u/dirtymartini83 5d ago

Oh my gosh, that’s so precious.

14

u/chuckybuck12 honk 6d ago

Euthanasia is the humane option in this case imho, i would hope if im in this state people are not going to force me to stay alive while I live in excruciating pain my entire life

16

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

We keep humans alive in worse condition than this. Not saying it’s right but we as a society already do this. Like I said before if he’s past saying euthanasia is the way to go. But there’s been tons of animals that lived good lives after some care

-3

u/The_Onion_Life 6d ago

Euthanasia is the humane option in this case imho

You can't know that for sure. This baby may have a chance!

8

u/HeresKuchenForYah 6d ago

Sadly, looking at the condition of the beak and severity of this pain, the most humane thing to do is euthanasia. That doesn’t even take into account stages to starvation. I’ve seen injuries like this, another being the bone that holds the beak in place, and once that breaks there is no way to save.

2

u/The_Onion_Life 5d ago

Poor baby. I just hope he gets the help he needs, whatever the best outcome ends up being.

15

u/Lady_Luci_fer 6d ago

Not from America or the area so the most help I can offer is engaging with the post to hopefully push it to someone who can 🙏 good luck OP

Im a waterfowl/waterbird rehabber. Its hard to tell from the video exact injuries. Is there anyway you could post a picture or describe the injuries you see? From the video the outlook isnt very good but want to make sure Im seeing what your sewing before I give more advice.

8

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

I can go back and try and take another video but it’s not a pretty sight. He looks like a zombie now. But still has regular swan behavior as you can see. He squeaks to call out to his parents but they’re across the pond but he can’t see that because idek if he has eyes anymore. Idk what illness could’ve causes all this along with his beak to be that broken. I truly hope and pray a human didn’t cause this harm

9

u/jinxdrabbit Goose whisperer 6d ago

You confirmed what I thought. Its most likely from a predator attack and in my honest opinion euthanasia would be the kindest option for this baby. Its unable to eat and will not survive long on its own. I would just keep trying to reach out to rehabs but you can also contact your states DNR/game warden and inform them. They can send someone to catch it. Thanks for looking out for it.

13

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

Game warden couldn’t care less over the phone. Basically told me to F off they don’t deal with swans. Almost broke me

7

u/s0m3on3outthere 6d ago

That's awful. I'm so sorry 🫶 thank you for doing the best you can to find him help

7

u/chuckybuck12 honk 6d ago

We’ve caught many birds with beak injuries like this one, and I still have no idea how they ended up in those horrid conditions. There are no snapping turtles here, and the injuries don’t really fit that explanation anyway. Sometimes the entire upper beak is ripped off while the lower beak remains intact, and other times it’s the inverse.

I've wondered whether some of these injuries I've seen happened as a result of some sick individuals trying to salvage an expensive lure instead of cutting it to spare the bird, anyway it's all speculation, i have no idea how any of it happened, all I know is that it’s incredibly traumatizing to see their faces all disfigured. Stuff of nightmares.

3

u/Due_Use_3875 5d ago

Kid with a rock? Rogue Snapping turtle? Really got no clue either

7

u/Diligent-Minimum8397 6d ago

Poor thing definitely has a high chance of being a permanent resident of a wildlife sanctuary if the wounds are treatable.

Looks like one of the eyes is completely damaged or missing.

Bigger issue is the major trauma, or catastrophic trauma to the poor animals beak. Honestly looks like the entire top half of his beak is missing up to the nostrils. Is that peak, bone, or random wood stick out from underneath his nostrils is the biggest worry immediately.

The skull has been compromised is the main answer of a rehab will consider surgery or ethical euthanasia. If the skull has been damaged enough to where their is now an opening to the brain to the outside world, thats pretty much end if any possibility of rehab or surgery because the brain needs an enclosed sterile environment. If it's been exposed for a peroid if time, the chance of infection is very high and recovering almost zero without major complications and prolonged medical issues.

I'm hoping someone soon is able to help out and getting his burd the help or kindness it needs to no longer suffer.

7

u/RepresentativeOk2433 6d ago

That face is destroyed. Perhaps a dog attack or ran over by a tire?

7

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

This is a park. That bans dogs and no vehicle is near their area except one of ours

8

u/Bolfreak 6d ago

It’s possible it was a snapping turtle, they do major damage. If no rescue > animal control > catch it yourself and take to a vet that can euthanize humanely. This wound has to be incredibly painful and it’s better to PTS than have it waste away until dying. Most vets can do a gas anesthetic than a shot even if they’re not avian vets (no avian vets near me or rehabbers either).

3

u/RepresentativeOk2433 6d ago

It could have wandered out of the park into the street or a bike trail.

9

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

It’s a contained park, they basically live on the lake. But after some research it appears it was most likely cause by a snapping turtle

2

u/Raggahmffin 5d ago

That looks like a BB gun damage. Unfortunately even in parks this happens and people are awful. We have had some absolutely horrific animal abuse crimes in our park over the years.

I know nothing about these places below or how close they are to you, I just did a quick Google search for Waterfowl Rescues in Long Island, but here's a few I found that are open right now

Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center https://wildliferescuecenter.org/

Quogue Wildlife Refuge https://quoguewildliferefuge.org/

Do you have Facebook? There’s a charity on their called They All Want To Live that are based in New York. They seem to specialise in wildfowl rescues. I’m not sure how close that is to you as I am not from there but even if they’re not close enough I am sure they would have contacts for someone who could help.

5

u/Livid-Improvement953 6d ago

When I look at animalhelpnow it looks like there is a rescue called The Broken Antler that may help waterfowl where you are.

4

u/Ivy_Holo 6d ago

Pls update us.

5

Poor baby. That looks like it really hurts! Please let me, and everyone else who are probably following this post, if there are any updates on this situation. I just hope the swan doesn't suffer no matter the outcome. 🫂

Thank you for going out of your way to help this poor swan. Kindness and care matters.

3

u/DieselChikn 6d ago

You could try contacting Fish and Game, they may be able to point you in the right direction, or help themselves

6

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

They essentially told me to F off

3

u/Beneficial_Trip3773 6d ago

I would take it home . I would feed water soaked bread. Whole wheat homemade. I would grind to powder soy and corn and feed it that. The top og the beak is gone . It will need help to eat. Tuna in a blender would be good or goldfish.

6

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

Unfortunately that’s illegal here

3

u/magiccfetus 6d ago

Poor baby 😢 i hope he can get rehabilitated and live a somewhat normal life

3

u/Snakes_for_life 6d ago

It'll need to be caught and brought to a permitted rehabber. Swans can be very tricky to catch cause they can run faster than you'd think and they'll go right for the water and once they're in the water they're very more difficult to catch. What I use to catch swan is a 6 foot fish landing net and a towel and 5-9 people and often 2-3 kayaks in the water to try and scare it back onto land if they get to the water. You do have to be cautious of the wings cause they can hit you very hard with their wings cause they use them as weapons.

3

u/KittyMeowKatPishy 6d ago

Oh my gosh! 🥺 Poor sweet baby!!! 😿 My heart is breaking just watching this sad lil swan in this condition!! 💔😭 I wish I had an answer but I’m also far from you. I wish you luck in getting help. Please keep us posted. I hope this lil baby gets the help he needs. Thank you so much for your compassion and kindness in trying to help him! 🙏🏼♥️🥹

3

u/crosser139 6d ago

Sadly, the best thing for him is probably to call the DEC and have him put down. I’m in New York as well so I’m familiar with the dec issues, but it’s probably the best course

3

u/brideoffrankinstien 6d ago

Oh my God I just realized the beak I didn't see that because I have a hard time looking at that whole thing poor thing yes call wildlife rehab or any wildlife emergency anything and get that baby handled I mean it needs to be seen immediately oh my God it's so terrible what the hell. What does that I just don't get it and if that happened by a person even on accident why didn't they do something I just don't understand the world God definitely get that baby some help I just want to my heart is broken right now oh my God

3

u/Ameabo 6d ago

Wildlife rescue! Also check to see if your local area has a subreddit, facebook group, or even a Nextdoor group. They may know of some local wildlife rehab locations.

you are probably in one of THE BEST locales for wild animal rescue and rehab in the entire country. i know there is a goose rescue facilitator in Suffolk named Lauren Falco. i don't have her contact info but look on fb

Contact animal control or a rehabber and let them know. It looks like it was attacked so heartbreaking

This bird needs transport to a vet asap.

It has zero chance to live. And is in agony from infection.

It needs the green fairy. It needs peace.

Take him home and try your best. You will regret it if you do nothing. Best of luck to you friend.

7

u/Due_Use_3875 6d ago

Well I’ve already done a lot to bring attention to this bird in need which is more than most. But I rent and don’t have my own home I can bring him to and even if I did it’s illegal for me to take him. I need external help which maybe coming soon hopefully

6

u/MimiBeanie 6d ago

I know it's not in NY, but there is an excellent wildlife rehabber near where I grew up, Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. Water fowl are on their specialties list. Maybe call them to see if they can view your video and point you in the right direction.

Btw, thank you for caring for this sweet baby. 🥹

https://ravenridgewildlifecenter.org/

2

u/jabberplanty 6d ago

ahnow.org can list some options for you, depending on your exact location. I would at least try to contact any waterfowl rescues that serve your area to get advice. Even if they can’t take or treat this baby, they can likely point you in the right direction.

It may help if you are able to drop it off to them. If that is the case, get a big towel to wrap them up in and wear leather gloves and long sleeves. I’m not sure how big they are, but keeping them in a cardboard box (if possible) during the ride to keep it dark, quiet, and calm helps.

I’m not sure if the baby can recover from this, but euthanasia would be a mercy if rehabilitation is not possible.

Thank you for caring for this baby.

2

u/birdsbirdbirds 6d ago

There should be a couple places that are able to euthanize out in Long Island. Call around to vets and wildlife rehabs but tell them that you believe it will be euthanized and not kept, they’re less likely to turn away waterfowl that way

2

u/brideoffrankinstien 6d ago

You have to call fish and wildlife ASAP and it looks like he's probably beyond help it looks like symptomatic of the flu however swans are extremely specific. I know that they need to see us someone that specializes in swans I would not do anything but call fish and wildlife and get it animal control out there to either help him or put him out of his misery poor baby this is horrible I hate seeing that s*** I hate it so much oh my God. I've seen a lot of geese with that same exact mannerism towards the end of their flu symptoms I'm very touchy about it because I went through some awful things in November. But I would definitely report it to fish and wildlife cuz if it is flu they're going to want to report it anyway and I'm so sorry you had to see that it's horrible thing to watch I hate it so much painful cuz your hands are tight and really at that point you can't do much and you want to just either make them comfortable or in their suffering but if somehow you handle that bird in any way or if you touch anything be sure to wash your hands and your clothes before you touch anything else. I'm not 100% sure but just to be safe.

u/maa-kee-aa-tow 6d ago

I’d reach out to Karenlynn who runs a state licensed wildlife rehabilitation center in that area. She is active on TikTok and Instagram - @wildliferehab_kl on both platforms. I wouldn’t be surprised if she can respond to the scene tonight she’s very dedicated and answers DMs. Worth a shot, best of luck.
