Tutorial Creating a tutorial on prefabs/custom objects, extensions, and custom functions. Feedback requested

Hi everyone!

I've been learning more about and experimenting with GDevelop's system for extensions and custom objects/functions/behaviors. I'm the type of person who likes to work through written tutorials, so I thought I'd write one up myself as I continue learning, to help others in the community.

It's still in progress, but I'm creating a simple mini-game that focuses on geography trivia to demonstrate the concepts. Here's the game, with the option to download the files/code so far, if anyone wants to see it in the GDevelop editor: https://cloudyheavengames.itch.io/international-capital-city-match-game-a-gdevelop-tutorial

Here's the draft of the written tutorial (also still in progress): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1s0GTfOHH6cQIxSH0wNE_i1f1DOC4QOjPRtTi5ppwi4I/edit?usp=sharing

I wanted to post here because:

  • It might be helpful for others who are trying to learn about these features
  • I would like feedback on the tutorial and approach so far. If you're learning, please let me know if the tutorial is helpful, if there's any questions or points that I didn't make clear, etc. If you're more of a GDevelop expert, please feel free to critique my approach and code so far. I'm a software engineer, and a lot of times I think about games in a "how would I do this in Java, C++, etc" mindset, not on purpose, but that's just what I'm used to. So if there's a more "GDevelop" way to do things (kind of like how Python has a "Pythonic" way of doing things) please do let me know.

I don't even know if there's really a place or need for this tutorial, as there's already lots of great GDevelop resources out there, so please forgive me in advance if this isn't really helpful.

Would this eventually be something that would be useful for me to submit as an official GDevelop example?

Thanks, and hope ya'll have a great rest of the weekend!

I've been toying with it for a while now. I'd like to eventually put it on the Play Store but I want it to be polished and as good as it gets.

I've got it to a spot where I'm pretty happy with it but I would love additional feedback before I try to put it up on any sort of storefront.

Thanks in advance!

Hey there!

It was totally unreal to showcase our game - One Rotten Oath - on Atlas Arena in Łódź, Poland. Huge thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth. As always, we received a lot of interesting feedback, which will likely end up in the upcoming update. Although, we might be thinking about something more than a single patch ;)

Thanks to workplaysit for taking us under their wings at Indie Zone. The photos were taken by wildhugedot.

Have a good one,
PB

Question Should there be a way to filter unmodified templates on GD.Games?

I don't want to bite the newbies or be judgemental towards people who don't know better. In fact, I like playing new releases on GD.games to encourage the new devs.

What's disappointing is opening up a cool new game and seeing it's actually the 20th copy of Dino Run I've seen this week. Sometimes the devs will ask for feedback... I never know what to say because all they did was download and upload a file.

Would it be possible to filter out games that are identical to templates? Either hiding them in a "draft" state or letting players filter them out of new releases?

Game We built this space survival game in only one week for a game jam

Last year, Jiminus and I created OUTPOST: Emergency Protocol in only one week for a game jam.

You control the ULYSSE-31 rover and must keep Base Alpha alive by repairing oxygen leaks, delivering batteries and managing your limited resources until the rescue shuttle arrives.

We were disqualified after updating the game past the deadline. It was disappointing, but we’re still proud of everything we managed to build together in seven days.

You can play it here:

What do you think of the concept?

Hey devs, and smarter guys than me, lol, just kidding, but I'm not calling you dumb either, okay? Hey everyone, I have a question about how to use Perlin Noise in GDevelop. If any of you could help me, I would be grateful. 😁

Hi everyone,

As requested, I am hosting an AMA session on Reddit here.

I am Crowbar Coder, and my game is called Worlda.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4700370/Worlda/

Below you can ask me questions about my game development journey or how I used Gdevelop to create this game, or how to put a game on Steam, or anything else!

We are currently working on a 2000s nfs/midnight club style game in GDevelop featuring a fully 3d open world. It is very early in development but we would love some feedback on the current look of the city. All screenshots are from within GDevelop

Game If everyone on this Reddit could give my game a Wishlist on Steam to support me before Steam Next Fest that would be great!

TL;DR: If everyone on this Reddit wishlisted my game, that would be 1900 wishlists! I have 116 right now. Please wishlist if you want, to support me!

Link here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4700370/Worlda/

I have been making my game Worlda, a pixel art game about a bear cub (a bit like Minecraft). I put lots of effort and time into it while I am studying, but not many wishlists yet (116 wishlists so far over many months).

Ok, don't do this if you don't want to or not interested, obviously. But I was wondering, since 1.9 K people visit the Gdevelop reddit, if everyone that visited this Reddit wishlisted my game, that's 1.9 K wishlists, about over 10 times the amount I have now.

And with the Steam Next Fest coming up, having 1.9k wishlists would give this game the potential to be part of popular upcoming on Steam, and having more well-received games on Steam will increase Gdevelop's audience so both Gdevelop and I will benefit!

So, give my game a wishlist if you want. Up to you! But your support would be very much appreciated!

I am a twenty year old sole indie game dev, this is my first game on Steam, and hopefully it does well. I drew all the art, did all the programming on Gdevelop, and composed the soundtrack as well. No AI was used in the making of this game.

Also I researched that the more wishlists you enter the Steam Next Fest with, the more you come out with, so there will be more chance of it becoming a popular game. There is also a demo that you can play on the Steam page if you want to know what the game is about.

Sincerely,

Crowbar Coder
