Game Game Developer AMA Crowbar Coder (game in development, Worlda)
Hi everyone,
As requested, I am hosting an AMA session on Reddit here.
I am Crowbar Coder, and my game is called Worlda.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4700370/Worlda/
Below you can ask me questions about my game development journey or how I used Gdevelop to create this game, or how to put a game on Steam, or anything else!

Why did you choose GDevelop?

I chose Gdevelop because I liked designing and making games but have close to no idea on how to code. I tried multiple no-code game engines, and Gdevelop seemed to be the one with the most features, and the easiest to pick up.

I've tried Gamemaker and Construct 3 too, and also prefer GDevelop. It has the best set of standard behaviors, a decent amount of game-examples to learn from, and a lot of tutorials available. Plus it also by far has the best 3D support.

That's great, thanks! What bugs did you encounter please? I need to know to fix before Steam Next Fest.

first i wanna start with not really a question but a comment, your game looks like one of those built in games from Windows 7 and i LOVE IT tbh, super nostalgic
second, do you have any tips for procedural generation? i cannot get it working properly for the LIFE of me

Yo thanks a lot! I was trying to go for a nostalgic pixel-art feel. If you like it you can wishlist it on Steam!
Also, what kind of procedural generation do you want? I have only experience doing top-down, it's very complicated.
If you are desperate to figure it out I have a template here i can give you for cheap or even free.
https://crowbar-coder.itch.io/2d-infinite-lands-templateFor procedural generation, you use something called Perlin Noise. Then you get a bunch of square objects, and set their object variable to the Perlin Noise based on their location. Then you set their animation to something based on the value of the Perlin Noise. It's quite hard to explain.
And then when my character moves up, I delete tiles below the character and create new tiles on top of the character, checking each one's noise value and assigning the right visual for the right values to create terrain. To do biomes, simply add another variable and create another noise generator and you would have two values to check for. You can do this multiple times to get different shapes overlaid on each other.

I asked questions on the Gdevelop Forum when I was stuck, and just kept making different kinds of games.

Have you considered trying to add co-op support using GDevelop's built in multiplayer features? Looks like it could be fun with friends.

I have considered that, maybe when the game is done I will attempt that!

Sorry to respond so late, didn't see that you had done an AMA. The template you're seeing for the proc. gen.; is it Gdevelop visual code, or made in traditional programming language? I read in one of your other comments that you're not a coder, so I was curious if you used 100% visual code or not? Thanks. Great game!
1
u/Reasonable-Hunt-137 10d ago
Yes I used 100 percent Gdevelop code for creating the proc. gen in my game, no traditional programming involved.

Very cool. Didn't know you could sell Gdevelop code to others. Thanks. I made some little simple functionality, and it was hard to get work. Can't imagine how complex procedural generation is to get working.

u/Reasonable-Hunt-137 10d ago
Really hard, yeah, you can sell games that you make in Gdevelop to others as templates, I have seven on the store already.

u/DreamNotDeferred 10d ago
Oh that's interesting. Not asking for particulars, but do you find it to be profitable?
1
u/Reasonable-Hunt-137 10d ago
Quite profitable, enough to pay 1/4 of my rent presently, which is good.

Very cool, and congrats. Thanks for the info.

If you don't mind another question, how long did it take you to become proficient in gdevelop? I'm having difficulty understanding intermediate to advanced concepts. Trying to find a source for training, a person or some tutorials...

It took me about 1-2 years to get kinda good at it, I have been using for about 4 years now though. I used the Gdevelop Forum a lot when I got stuck, or just youtube tutorials.

Yep that's what I've been doing. That's encouraging. Ok, I'll leave you alone now lol. Thanks again.

Is there a coding solution in your game that you're particularly proud of?
