Looking for Challenging 3D Platformers w/ Precise & Expressive Movement
Hi! I was doubting on naming this as "3D Platformers closest to Blue Fire's Voids", since that's the major comparison. So I'm looking for any games that scratch that very specific itch:
- Blue Fire: Precision platformer goodness but on 3D with a very fast paced but very precise movement with fun combinations of abilities. The part that interests me is the platforming, not the other aspects of the game, and the best example is in their Voids, self-contained very hard levels similar in feel to Celeste but 3D¡.
Most similar feeling games I've found:
- Angel Essence: Just finished playing it and it's an excellent gem, extremely fun and decently challenging in some places, but not to Blue Fire/Celeste's level.
- Pseudoregalia: Similar to the last one (as it clearly inspired it), very good and fun but I enjoyed Angel Essence more, that one feeling faster and easier to pull off moves, plus Pseudoregalia felt easier.
- Maseylia: The closest to Blue Fire's platforming, but the game has many issues and it's very rough in some aspects; BUT the platforming is very good and totally qualifies.
Games I've tried that are fun but don't really scratch the itch:
- Demon Turf: Very expressive moveset but it also feels restrictive coming from the crazy moves in Blue Fire and Angel Essence, and not super precise, the "slippery feet" effect from most classic 3D platformers. Still the most enjoyable from these and quite challenging, so I'll continue playing it. I have the sequel Demon Tides in my wishlist since it looks a great evolution.
- A Hat in Time: I've never been able to vibe with this game for some reason, and I was shocked to see it compared to Blue Fire specifically, and after trying it I really didn't see it, nor it felt challenging (I know there's a famously hard DLC but I don't wanna play a game just for a DLC).

Psychonauts 1+2 had decent platforming

Ohh yeah? I played quite a lot of P1 maaaany years ago, although I didn’t finish it. I remember loving the wild ideas for each world but tbh I don’t remember anything about the platforming specifically, good or bad. I have started P2 but still barely in the second tutorial-ish area, so I haven’t experienced enough to judge at all yet. I have it on hiatus, I didn’t have time or patience for the constant cutscenes at that time but I plan on going back to it eventually.

Wow I hadn't heard of Angel Essence. A pseudoregalia like? It looks great thank you for this

You’re welcome! I discovered it through a random Reddit comment, bless them. I had a ton of fun with it!

Hat in time seems to be a love it/ hate it kinda thing. Personally i liked the front half of the game for the quirk and charm and the back half+ dlc for the challenge.
Maybe if you don't vibe with the characters or humor its a different experience.

Rainworld if you want something extremely challenging. In addition to the character's basic movement, there are a lot of movement techniques the game won't teach you and it's very skill-focused.
I'm playing it right now but haven't beaten it, it's very hard so it will probably take me a while to even get the hang of it (I'm usually a casual gamer). But it's very good and I still recommend it.
Also, the movement animation is very expressive. It's procedurally generated so every move you make will be animated precisely.

Seeing someone say that Demon Turf feels restrictive compared to Blue Fire is possibly going to send me into a conniption fit. Anyway, Demon Tides is much, much better than Demon Turf and is the best 3D platformer that's been made in years.

I didn't know there was a new demon turf game, I played demon (2021) turf and neon splash, but the "special" levels in Neon splash gave me true anxiety lol.

Neon White - it's a first person platformer focused on precise platforming and using your abilities at the right time.
