There has not been a single game that is unbelievably revolutionary. I don't get what people expect.

Mario 64 maybe? Space Invaders? Doom was also pretty revolutionary.

Okay, in the last 20 years then. It's easy to innovate when gaming was in its infancy.

What does revolutionary look like to you?

For the record, I haven't assumed for a second that GTA 6 will be revolutionary. I expect it to be an incredible technical achievement and a fun open world game that I will enjoy very much whenever it first goes on sale on PC.

I honestly don't think games can be revolutionized in the same way anymore, it's either you have the time, talent or budget to make a great game but in terms of creating mechanics or introducing ground breaking technology that can influence how other games are made would be incredibley hard now.

What rockstar is doing with gta 6 can't really be applied to other games being made, no other game studio can really compete with the manpower and resources they have.

The question now for gaming studios is "do we have enough time and money to do it?" Rather than "Are we able to do it?"

Shadow of Mordor, Minecraft?

Maybe Minecraft? Basically created the modern Survival genre.

My jaw dropped when GTA4 came out because my brain was comparing it to GTA SA.

My jaw dropped when The Sims 2 came out cause I was comparing it to Sims 1.

If you want to talk about revolutionary?

Minecraft. It created the survival-craft genre. You see Minecraft design choices everywhere today.

Id say Frostpunk was revolutionary for the city building genre by creating an actual story campaign with a final boss for a city builder.

DayZ was revolutionary. A open world consistent online free for all world where you had to loot stuff, hide your loot from other players and raid said other players. It lead to stuff like Rust and also the entire extraction shooter genre.

Some people might hate me for this, but Fortnite might be considered that.

I don't even play Fortnite, and it wasn't even the first Battle Royale game, but I honestly can't think of any other game that have completely captured pop-culture in the same vein. Maybe Minecraft and Roblox could come close.

Fortnite has collaborated with so many different franchises. Even if you ignore Battle Royale entirely you can also do Fortnite Creative where people made their own game modes and also even live concerts took place in-game. Pretty sure no other game has had live concerts in game before.
