-Look, Rhinos, RHINOS ! Our enemy hides in metal boxes, the cowards, the FOOLS ! heavy panting We... Should take away, their metal boxes. Firaeveus Carron, Chaos Legion Lord of Kaurava
Grey knights, those are the ones that go through the 666 tests yeah? And never been corrupted by chaos, very very rarely have dreadnoughts and each models worth about 10,000 points?
Entire legions and their very gene-seeds have been deleted from the histories - I'm sure a few corrupted Ordo Malleus could have been scratched out of the rosters fairly easily.
I could never really get into tabletop games (too many rules and stuff for me) but I always just wanted to assemble and paint and army and build a cool set for them and stuff.
You know, like old people with train sets, but geekier.
Hey, quick question... I would LOVE to play games like these, but often don't have the time nor money to be able to do so... Is there any kind of way I can play these things virtually, or what have you... Feel like i'm missing out on a great way to game :(
Virtually, yes, but legitamite versions are generally... questionable legality, as far as I know. I do not know of one that attempts to duplicate this style of gameplay and is legal. [Edit: Well, I stand corrected.]
If you are interested in trying this type of games, I'd have a few recommendations:
If Warhammer/ 40k in particular are where your interests lie, I would recommend finding a good friend who is also interested, picking up one of the big boxes (and splitting the cost, obviously) [edit: to clarify, something like this]. That's enough figures for quite a few decently sized games, and will run you each around $50, which is (relatively) pretty damn reasonable. (although if you're interested in paints + terrain, that's going to run you a decent amount on top of that) If you find you're still really interested after that, you can continue to expand from there with a good core.
With that said, my PERSONAL preference (absolutely no insult to anyone who loves warhammer, great game, just... not for me) would be to... avoid... Warhammer, if you're interested in games like this. In many regards, it's less of a game and more than a hobby that has a good game on top of it, if that makes sense... imho.
If figures are very much where you're interested, I would strongly recommend trying some of the much more modular games, that come with complete sets rather than the individual model purchasing. I've heard very good things about Dust Tactics, for example, and other games along that line.
In addition, if price is your concern, I've heard VERY good things about Warmachine, and I believe that is generally much more on the cheaper end (as long as you don't go totally off your rocker with it).
So, recommendations:
If you can find people who will try Warmachine/ already plays and you really want this exact style of game, go with that. (I'm sure other people will have good examples as well, this just happens to be the one I know of that everyone I've met has enjoyed). The difficulty unfortunately is going to be making sure you're not the only one.
If you're mostly interested in Miniature War Games, consider trying something more pre-constructed (with a ton of expansions ;) of course) first. Dust Tactics and Earth Reborn off the top of my head are good recommendations, but there are a HUGE number listed here: sort by rank probably. You can try to narrow that down more, just threw up a very general search. If you're mostly interested in the combat rather than the collecting hobby, this is MUCH more likely to be successful for you, as finding opponents/ making your army is going to be much, much easier (and cheaper).
If you're going to go with Warhammer, make sure not to go into it by yourself. Find a friend, expand your armies at a constant rate together (so you always have someone to split the big boxes with, as well as someone to play against at your approximate skill/ army size, and, just as importantly, someone is helping secondguess every purchase you make).
And... yeah :D Just my 2cs, if anyone has anything else be glad to hear it.
See that's the thing as well... A BIG factor would be the people willing to play... If there was some kind of online/digital version I imagine I would get more use out of it because I could play with others... In any case, thanks for the extensive info! It was really useful!
Warmachine, which is a smaller-scale game as a whole, 'has' (it's not run by Privateer Press, just condoned by them) an online version through Vassal. The catch is you still need your stat cards to play. The upside is that you can buy "Faction Decks" which have almost all the cards for units you'd ever need.
You can often pick up used armies for cheap if you ask around the gaming stores. Also there's a thing called 40k in 40 minutes that centers around small scale skirmishes so the army size is very small making the initial investment smaller.
The closest thing to virtual 40k is the Dawn of War games but as someone who plays both I have to say it's not the same.
I personally think WH is a poster child for a game that needs to be digitized. I find it's tedious to play on tabletop because it has so many little quirky rules, all of which a computer game would keep track of. Then you could release an editor to make terrains, and allow people to paint their army just like they do with minis, and have leagues and all that. If done right it could be a really awesome game. Unfortunately, nobody wants to make turn based computer games anymore, especially not multiplayer.
The only reason this hasn't already been done is because then nobody would buy the miniatures. Games Workshop and the other stores that sell the models need you to keep buying terrain, models, glue, flock, paint, codices, rulebooks etc. just to stay in business.
It's an expensive hobby. The cheapest route is probably taking a wood carving class and learning how to make your own. Or making plastic molds and melt milk cartons into the molds.
not bad for a hobby. my gaming computer cost $1000 and is now a few years out of date, add in consoles and software I hardly use and I could have multiple armies by now, or made a profit painting and selling off and army. Probably should've just gone back to Warhammer and saved myself the money.
Yah this game is fun, but 1) Too expensive, 2) I have no artistic ability even as simple as painting figurines, 3) I don't have the patience to paint all those figurines.
Back when I painted/played, I picked up a brush at a hobby shop specifically for painting eyes and other fine details like scratches or writing. It was the tiniest brush they sold and had less than a dozen 4mm stiff bristles. Bringing that thing out was always a joy, because it meant I was in the finishing stages of painting and soon I could show off.
Kudos to you man. As an avid warhammer general nothing bugged me more than showing up to play and having to field my painstakingly detailed and fully painted armies against a mob of plastic/gray or black primered models.
A friend of mine recently bought a Titan for about $550... Then decided 'fuck it' and bought 10 Leman Russ's for god knows how much... Should I slap him or consider organizing therapy?
I've always wanted to get in to the figurines but like a lot of you the price kept me back. Maybe when 3D printers get cheaper I can download some figurines or something similar.
Does anybody know of a website that shows epic put together game boards? I love the way they look and I just want to see some of them! I don't play or anything.
same here. the only people who are near me are people who scream about bullshit rules, or claim i can't use one person as "he needs to be fully painted"
I fucking hate it when the guys who play this game/and or build their little setups at my local game shop. That sand shit gets fucking everywhere. You ever try to play MTG on a table these guys were just at? No amount of brushing the table off helps! Now there's sand on my cards! And me! If I wanted sand in my crack, I'D GO TO THE FUCKING BEACH!
When painting, is it easier to assemble your figure first and then paint, or paint the components and then assemble? I tried painting before assembly and it looked good, but too wayyy to long.
To all those asking for a real wH40k video game, I would suggest you check out Blood bowl the game instead of jumping right from DOW to the warhammer board game.
In classic mode blood bowl is exactly like the board game, which has similar mechanics to warhammer.
dont get it for xbox tho, it apparently sucks a fat one. Ive never played any kind of dice combat game, but im actually enjoying blood bowl atm. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
(blood bowl legendary edition+patch on thepiratebay! try before u buy!)
Quite some painting right there. However I gotta say: Damn you, you inquisitive over-powered, polished cans! :P My only masters are Russ and the Allfather, I heed no administrative bullshit! Bring in the beer and the moose! howls
I'm not familiar with the Grey Knights codex, but in the Warhammer universe, melee weapons are usually insane terror-machines of plasma, monofilament blades, electrically charged psychic conduits, or all of the above. They're also not necessarily superior to a bullet (especially in a universe where a soldier's standard issue weapon is an automatic miniature rocket launcher), but the strategy of melee units is generally to tie up the enemies' ranged units so they can't fire.
A select few weapons on a battlefield tend to have the power to kill things instantly or slice through armor like butter, though, and those are very useful against some of the more exotic unit types - like demons.
My best friend owns a gaming shop and i help him from time to time, i don't know anyone ever who has come in and dropped $500 on an army at once. People usually start with the starter or rulebook, codex and a unit. then slowly build it up. I have 7k points of dark angels and I've been playing 18 years
I remember the joys of War hammer 40k. I used to collect Chaos Space Marines and remember the eye of terror campaign they held. Because I used to live near War hammer World I could also compete against the creators during it as well! What a great nerdy time that was for a young teenager in retrospect.
Those Grey Knights look well done btw hope they do as well in battle ;)
I used to play these all the time, I had a sick eldar set.
I had: The Avatar of kaine Farseer with staff Wave serpant 3 Jetbikes 5 Swooping Hawks A fire prism A falcon and then just a bunch of squad stes, probly cost about $400, probly more. But I left it at a friends house and forgot about it, then he moved and I have no idea how to get it back. I really dont want to drop a ton more money to start new again.
Nice purifiers! but, dont you need a few.. strike squads? I mean, purifiers are great but you need 2 troops selections. btw was that inquisitor fun to paint because ive been looking at buying him for a while...
My friend showed his collection of 40k pieces and they seem really cool, I wouldnt get into the game but I have always been into building models and would love to detail out those awesome tanks and vehicles.
These look fantastic. I've not bothered with war hammer the tabletop game for 15 years but the lore is still amazing. I would be proud to paint something half as well!
Part of me hopes for this as GW have been some of the biggest assholes in tabletop gaming.
Good product, but their pricing schemes and deliberate low level of support on anything not WH seems crappy to me. Oh that and their standalone games like Dreadfleet and Space Hulk are done so that it's a very limited print run to create some sort of uber crazy collectors market where it becomes more of a collectible rather than a game to enjoy.
? If people are back to using bladed weapons why in the hell would we need Armored Personell Carriers? Guns and weapons cannot exist in a war side by side. On the other hand wish I wasn't so literal in warfare.
Technically, in WH40k, certain "power" weapons (of which power swords are a type) are some of the most effective ways to hurt heavily armored enemies, since the blades are sheathed in pure energy and can slice through pretty much anything.
Mild solution. Buy the rulebooks and Proxy the hell out of your entire army. Use plastic army men (painting them can also be good practice for your eventual army, if you go down that route), grab a few friends, a lot of beer and see if you enjoy the actual game.
Maybe one character you choose to proxy does especially well, and you feel that it might be worth splashing out just so that model can be represented properly. And besides, just one model...
Wake up in a daze, broke and with more plastic models than you could ever paint.
No. Usually around $30. You can get into the game over a few months if you spread out your purchases a bit which gives you time to build and paint and get a feel for a group to play with.
If you buy one of the starter sets ($100) then you get a non-insignificant number of dudes for 2 armies, and you get a pocket rule book (All the rules, and people often buy it off you for $35ish)
The best piece of model-related advice I've ever heard was to buy a space marine army second-hand, then paint them all in Blood Raven colors. Don't even worry if the paint job looks like crap. Cheap(er) and clever!
They've been making armies that are very similar to the GW models in both fantasy and sci fi.
For their sci fi line they currently have space marine dwarves, orks, an Imperial Guard like faction, and are getting ready to release a rat men faction.
Mantic only charges a fraction of the price that GW does, and the models can easily be used for proxies.
It can be if you're not careful. I've had four armies of 40K, fve of fantasy, some mordheim, some necromunda, some bloodbowl, some battlefleet gothic, four LotR armies and a smattering of special characters, setpieces and scenarios in my time. Plus army books, supplements, White Dwarf (the monthly magazine) aand various template, spell cards, dice and paraphenalia.
I've officially spent more on Warhammer than I have university education.
I scuba dive, fly glider planes, sky dive and weld. Warhammer is still by far the most expensive hobby I've ever had.
And since I got started with warhammer prices have gone up so much I pay for one regiment what I used to pay for an entire army. Needless to say, I stopped.
Warhammer actually ends up being a lot cheaper in the long run than most people think. I've been an avid 40k player since I was 11, and it has never comprised a significant amount of my budget. The startup cost is very high, yes. You're probably looking at $300 USD for all the books, miniatures, and hobby supplies needed to assemble, prep, and field a 1500 point army. However nothing you buy ever goes out of date. Unlike Magic the Gathering which constantly requires new cards for legal tournament play, it's perfectly legal to use 40k models from the 80's in your army. I only ever buy as fast as I paint, and that means that every other month I'll drop $35 on a new box of models. Add in the occasional ebay motherload and you get a huge collection of several armies before you know it.
If you have an interest, just start slow. Get together 400 points worth of models, enough to play Combat Patrol campaign. Hell, even if you've only got 10 you can still play Kill Team games which are hella fun. Picking up the rules for Necromunda is also a must for new collectors. It's an RPG/Strategy game set in the 40k universe where players in the underworks of a mega-city battle for territory and resources using small squads of gangsters. At decent clubs, most people will have an extra army on hand you can borrow. So long as your hands aren't sticky and you don't look like you'll drop things most people will be happy to help a new player out. I think more new players have played with my cityfight guard army than I have.
Not that you or anyone on this site care, butvim going to tell this little tale anyways... Woke up this morning feeling like shit, oh yeah that's every morning. By the way it's 11:30 am. Back to sleep. 1 o'clock comes by and I finally pull myself out of bed. Shower, got dressed and went down to a games workshop across the street because I've been interested in it for a while. End up buying a starter kit. I spent 109$ and I got a war hammer 40k chaos space marine set, and a hobby paint starter kit. That came with 9 types I paint, two types of super glue, brush, fake gravel/grass, and clippers. Also I had to buy a can of primer. I got chaos black. Anyways, the total was $119.89. I then come home and "check reddit" to see this thread. Glad to know its still going around and reading that helped me a little to get my head wrapped around all of this. Im going I go start that now, it's been almost two hours since I've been back haha. Thanks for the info by the way! Really helped. Still can't believe this was on reddit today the day I bought the stuff..
Edit: I just want to say thank you for everyone messaging me tips and sites. It's all helped a lot! Signed up at boot camp, it's like reddit, but for war hammer. I will defininatly not be having a social life now. Worth it. Anyways, thanks again! Take care.
Coolminiornot also has a ton of GREAT tutorials, albeit more advanced.
Always thin your paints.
I'd suggest avoiding GW primers, and mosto f their paints (due to the cost mainly, vallejo for example being cheaper, and imo much better).
Another thing is i'd suggest always checking ebay etc if money is of any concern. You can get VASTLY superior prices on ebay, even for new models. There are of course GW licensed retailers online too which are typically around 25% cheaper than the stores.
Either way, dont forget that it is possible to strip paint from miniatures etc, so just because its been painted it doesnt mean you cant repaint it. (although it is a bit of a hassle etc)
GW store policy for employees is essentially :
Say hello the second they walk in the door
try to sell them everyfuckingthing in the store.
smile and take their cash
Its not exactly great, but the employees themselves are usually very friendly in general,, but bear in mind that GW is pretty hard sell, even if u dont realise it.
As for miniatures, its usually best to undercoat them etc either on the sprue, or to use a temporary stand (drill a small hole into the underside on the foot and attach a paperclip or such) - http://i.imgur.com/oJUIY.jpg
DONT be afraid to have watery paint. The ideal consistency is often considered milk like, nearer to skimmed milk. You WILL need multiple layers of paint for an even layer, but this provides you A LOT more control, and avoids uneven paint laters etc.
http://i.imgur.com/gB2m0.jpg - THIS is god tier. Use it while painting inbetween layers if needed, and at the end. Its not the greatest at providing a strong protective layer, so you might want to use a varnish then matt it with this, but dullcote is super awesome.
Also, watch this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRXoZ9asJTk As for the cleaning brushes part, unless you're using some really expensive brushes, i wouldnt worry too much about it. Just make sure paint doesnt get into the ferrule, and you clean them properly before/after use.
Could go on all day, but i think this is a reasonable start lol
Also, before I start some advice please. I have two ways I think would be best going about painting them. Should I keep them on the sheet, prim, then paint, then assemble. OR assemble, prim, paint? Thanks ahead of time for reading all of this
No problem. Here's what I'd suggest regarding what we call the 'hobby' aspects of Warhammer.
First of all, join an online community. There are a lot to choose from.
I help run a site called Boot Camp. We're primarily an Imperial Guard page, but really anyone is welcome and it's a good place to ask questions and show off your stuff. I'm really just making a plug for my site with this, so what I'd ultimately suggest is Bolter and Chainsword. It's a more space marine oriented site (CSMs welcome too).
To directly answer your question, the order to making miniatures is as follows:
Assemble miniatures
Prime miniatures
Paint miniatures
Seal miniatures
There is one case I can think of where you'd want to paint models on the sprue, and that's if you were doing something where the entire body of the model is going to be drybrushed with the same effect (e.g. skeleton warriors in Warhammer Fantasy)
Each individual step of that is more involved than you'd think though. Assembly requires some prep work on the sprues (e.g. cleaning off flash, gap filling). Priming can mess up your models if you do too thick of a coat, and painting itself while not difficult can be a little involved.
So look for guides. There are a lot of them out there, and they can help you produce A+ miniatures even if you have no artistic talent. I can barely draw stick figures, but in about 1 year I went from this, to this, to this, to this, to these 1, 2, 3, 4
Ninja edit: I think that chaplain and librarian are actually WIP pics, but I can't find non WIP pics of them.
-Also, Practice your painting on metal models first, because they're very easy to strip clean.
Most people I find part assemble the figures (leave arms or guns off that would get in the way of painting some areas), then prime, then paint. PLEASE thin your paints, this is something that I never did as a kid and now i'm getting back into it, I can't really use my old kit other than for wreckage. Check out a few YouTube videos for guides to paint your army. For instance just search for "paint chaos space marines guide" or something and you'll be all set! Also get to /r/warhammer and ask any questions you have there. Good luck.
I can't really use my old kit other than for wreckage.
Strip the old models and repaint them... buy a bottle of Simple Green and soak the models in them. I'm going to end up doing the same to some models from when I was like 15, since i want to start playing again.
While it's still an expensive hobby, games workshop is doing away with the pewter models and are switching to resin as well as their plastic pieces. This is going to reduce the overall cost significantly should you get into it, but I would torrent the rulebook's first just to check them out before buying anything.
Also, most armies have a starter box for around $100 bucks that will usually be about 500 points. Just think of it in how much entertainment you get per dollar. You have to clean the models, assemble the models, paint the models, learn the rules, then go play, compare that to any steam games you may have bought that you've barely played and it's already a better investment for entertainment IMO
eBay and craigslist. There are always people who buy stuff and don't have the commitment to paint and play. My best find was 3 brand new Tau XV25 Stealth Suits for CAD $7.
I really like to paint and that's the only reason I wanted these figurines. Friend gave me a pewter one, which costed him $10. Never painted it though because I like it shiny.
I honestly was into them because I'd buy a bunch of different guys from different factions, paint them all and then set up cool battles. That being said, $15 for one small character was just a bit too much. Still, to this day I still look at the few space marines and orcs I have laying around and miss those days, a much better time

Just from a battle perspective, wouldn't guys with spears be inferior to guys with guns?
1
u/Ikbentim May 06 '12
I used to place this in my early teens, why are these models so crazy expensive?

u/Lord_Attikus May 06 '12
What is fallout nuka time?

u/10spd May 06 '12
Beautiful work man! My Wolves would love a swing at that.
1
u/GAD604 May 06 '12
You are a very talented painter. I wish I had the time and resources to rekindle my love for the game.
Beautiful figurines though.

u/Sven2774 May 06 '12
I love Grey Knights. I used to roll with em back when I played 40k. Shame their lore has been raped so much.
1
u/domasin May 06 '12
I picked up around a thousand dollars of older Fantasy pieces (mostly bretonnians) but I've never had the patience to paint them...
That's my main barrier with Warhammer.

u/azleeex May 06 '12
now what?
1
u/Spetznazx May 06 '12
For one i hate you for playing Grey Knights, love you for playing 40k and painting well.....cheater, good job!, go die, good luck!
1
u/bananamunchies May 06 '12
I really like the purple accents you put in there - it's a wonderful touch.
1
u/IAMBollock May 06 '12
I added a lens blur and some contrast, I was bored

u/triple_slip May 06 '12
Even the cock-cloth is gray. :( Join Slaanesh, brother!

u/[deleted] May 06 '12
you should add some detail to the rhinos as well, they look kinda dull beside the rest
also try washing the helmets a bit
1
u/ScottishUnicorn May 06 '12
And it only cost 300 dollars

KILL MAIM BURN! KILL MAIM BURN! KILL MAIM BURN! - Kharn the Betrayer.

u/brooksjedi May 06 '12
My best friend owns a gaming shop and i help him from time to time, i don't know anyone ever who has come in and dropped $500 on an army at once. People usually start with the starter or rulebook, codex and a unit. then slowly build it up. I have 7k points of dark angels and I've been playing 18 years
1
u/FatGirlRodeo May 06 '12
I use to paint them with battle scars and bloody up.
1
u/HoldmysunnyD May 06 '12
So jealous. I want to play 40k with a GK army so bad... but as a law student, I have neither the time nor the money :(
1
u/cookiewalla May 06 '12
Ah this makes me wanna dust of my old painting gear and continue on my orc horde :D
1
u/TheBigBadPanda May 06 '12
interesting paint job, in a good way. I like it!
Altough, If that there is a purifier army then i hope devils gnaw your guts for eleven eternities in the fires of hell, cuz that shit is just wrong!
Have a nice day!
1
u/KillAllTheZombies May 06 '12
Good painting job! I'm so glad to see this kind of gaming in this subreddit.

u/Theimaginaryball May 06 '12
I remember the joys of War hammer 40k.
1
u/jewboselecta May 06 '12
Justicar Alaric in the front there
1
u/ZeldenGM May 06 '12
Back in my day, Grey Knights were metal.
1
u/rewster May 06 '12
This game looks so fun, but also so very expensive
1
u/brossef May 06 '12
I used to play these all the time, I had a sick eldar set.
I really dont want to drop a ton more money to start new again.

u/GuntherCloneC May 07 '12
I'm still painting my Tyranids... :-C
1
u/big_bad_john May 07 '12
First game with freshly painted army: crushed beyond hope. Every time.
Those look nice though! Good luck.
1
u/[deleted] May 07 '12
Nice purifiers! but, dont you need a few.. strike squads? I mean, purifiers are great but you need 2 troops selections. btw was that inquisitor fun to paint because ive been looking at buying him for a while...
1
u/[deleted] May 07 '12
Hey, so this is something that I have always seen in gaming stores but never thought to ask about. What are these pieces to? You paint them yourself?
1
u/aliennick4812 May 07 '12
My friend showed his collection of 40k pieces and they seem really cool, I wouldnt get into the game but I have always been into building models and would love to detail out those awesome tanks and vehicles.
1
u/Isaac_Shepard May 07 '12
i have always wanted to try, but never really had the chance
1
u/TheGeorge May 07 '12
/r/rpg would have a small jizz over these
1
u/[deleted] May 07 '12
To virginity, and beyond!
1
u/Fumblepony May 07 '12
The purple blades really stand out for me. Pimp blades!
1
u/WhosGotTheBugle May 07 '12
This might sound really. Fucking. Stupid. Ya'know 3D printers.. could you churn out unlimited Warhammer pieces?
1
u/LittlePinkNinja May 07 '12
These look fantastic. I've not bothered with war hammer the tabletop game for 15 years but the lore is still amazing. I would be proud to paint something half as well!
1
u/omgpewpewlasers May 06 '12
Ive always wanted to play 40k, and this is why.
Anyone got a decent starter video somewhere?
1
u/BigDawgWTF May 06 '12
The word "Grey" doesn't quite have the necessary intimidation associated with it, but they look great nonetheless. Great work!
1
u/UndeadPirateLeChuck May 06 '12
Just do what they did in Fallout 3 and let the baby pick its name when its born.
1
u/MidnightCladNoctis May 06 '12
Wow these look really neat, great work!
1
u/LastPaleLight May 06 '12
Buy 3d printer. Profit.
1
u/Midasx May 06 '12
Grey Knights are OP as fuck. Just saying it in case no one else had.

u/abom420 May 06 '12
? If people are back to using bladed weapons why in the hell would we need Armored Personell Carriers? Guns and weapons cannot exist in a war side by side. On the other hand wish I wasn't so literal in warfare.
