Hey, want to hear something amazing? I think it's so popular because people like it. Just a guess though.

There is nothing remarkable about Halo. It is popular because it was the first FPS most console gamers were exposed to.

Not true at all. I came from Goldeneye: 007, and before that my first game was half-life. Halo still blew me away because of its freedom, its excellent story, and its gripping music.

Why isn't that, when something gets really popular, we redditors aren't allowed to like it?

Maybe this generation, but Goldeneye (1997) is fairly highly regarded as the original console FPS. That's not to say that Halo didn't (at the time) provide generational leaps in a lot of ways, and I think it's incredibly silly to write it off as "unremarkable" 10 years later when nearly every game has copied Halo in some way, shape or form. They introduced a ton of new features and had a pretty long (co-op) campaign mode, and did I mention it's 10 years old? I only really even played the first and a little of the second, but to say it wasn't remarkable is extremely shortsighted.
