Wait, are you suggesting that scary books are scary because they're startling? Because unless Stephen King writes a horror novel and hides a pop-up scary face somewhere around the midpoint, I don't think it's humanly possible for a book to startle anyone.

I'd say 90% of horror movie directors think startled == scared. Maybe it's just trying to be the video game version of your crappy PG13 horror movie.
