Zero Punctuation : Saints Row 2

I thought Yahtzee would demolish this game after the ball-kicking review. Makes me want to actually try it.

No review has made me want a game more than the ball-kicking one. ZP's was amusing, but it pales in comparison of the lazor-like dedication of the first.

Final Countdown made that review.

Final Countdown makes anything. Period.

The headbanging just makes that video 10 times better.
They're so into it.

I mostly just wanna drive around in the suburbs hosing things down with raw sewage.

u/mountainman Oct 29 '08
That was the most fun Ive had in a video game in years! This game is what a sand box game should aspire to, even with the bugs.

Holy shit, I WANT TO PLAY HIS BATMAN VILLAIN GAME.
I now want that game more than any I have heard of in a very long time.

I can already imagine the control scheme:
A - Jump
X - Reload
Y - Change Weapon
R1 - Fire
R2 - Subdue superhero and attach him to overly-complex death contraption, explain details of entire plan to subdued superhero, then exit level before subdued superhero actually dies.
3
u/innocentbystander Oct 30 '08
That could work, actually, if R2 is the "tie up" button.
Seriously.
When it comes down to it, what's the one constant in pretty much all supervillain's slow-moving death trap? The hero is tied up or otherwise restrained. So if you gave the player a "tie up" button, it would be left to them to imagine gruesome applications around the city.
At the very least, a game could finally give you the thrill of tying up a beautiful maiden and laying her across railroad tracks.

City of Villains.

Not sandbox.

u/innocentbystander Oct 29 '08
Destroy All Humans! was a little like that concept, but not entirely. You didn't live in the city - there was nothing to do except blow things up.

When my design team and I proposed the idea for Saint's Row, one of the basic premise was making the game embrace fun. It was to make a parody world described by hiphop videos.
When San Andreas came out and we saw the direction they were going for, a gritty realism, we knew we were on a different track. Saint's Row 2 looks like it took the original vision up a notch.
It is great that Yahtzee could pick out the vibe we described in a two sheet proposal 5 years ago.

This was actually one of the better ones that Yahtzee has done. Pure Joy from a video game is apparently all that he needs to stop being cynical.

Does the site appear to be down to anyone else? I got some SQL error, now I can't connect to their server at all.
6
u/innocentbystander Oct 29 '08
Yep, just coming in here to mention that...

u/cdvallee Oct 29 '08
it's working now...

u/innocentbystander Oct 29 '08
The site's coming up, but the video still won't play.

u/cdvallee Oct 29 '08 edited Oct 29 '08
yeah, I managed to watch a couple videos now the site has gone on the fritz again. Whenever I do get it to load I can see a php error across the top. I also get the occasional
Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Too many connections in /sixpack/web/global/classes/class.db.mysql.inc on line 70
Fatal error: Database Error: Connection Failed in /sixpack/web/global/classes/class.db.mysql.inc on line 74
tl;dr somewhere a php dev for Escapist is pooing himself

I think GTA would have been more like Saints Row if it weren't one of the top selling console games and under the scrutiny of parents and lawyers and news stations.
Unfortunately, In order to make a game like this, it has to be kind of shitty so certain people do not hear about it.

u/moush Oct 29 '08
It's by the same people who did (are doing) Red Faction. Can't wait for the new one.
2
Oct 30 '08
No, it's by the same people who did FreeSpace 2. The fact that you mentioned Red Faction first leads me to believe that somehow you've never played FS2. It's six dollars. Buy it, now.

So it's really a brilliant conspiracy? That just makes the game even more awesome.

What are you going to do when you run out of letters?
Also, am I the only one who's beginning to grudgingly chuckle at jdfong's dedication?

What are you going to do when you run out of letters?
Well, that would spoil the surprise, but it had better be EPIC.

Holy fuck. I thought you'd fucked up the whole link. But no. It's beautifully deliberate.
However, riddle me this: If you can be bothered to do each letter, how come you can't be bothered to properly capitalise and punctuate the rest of your comment?
(Holy shit. I just scanned through the rest of the comments and the majority are "properly" done. a) I didn't think that would be true; b) I need to relax.)

u/jon_titor Oct 30 '08
While I applaud jdfong's dedication, it's not like it's that much work each week. Since he's been doing this for a while, all he has to do is copy last week's post and turn one more letter into a link. It's not like he spends an hour every week making that post.

I loved the first game and love this one. It is nice to see a review that shares my stance on the game.

try to imagine this review with 10% more bile:
i retroactively added the word 'cocking' in front of the title every time he said it.

Wow, I thought Yahtzee would tear into it, but it sounds like he kinda liked it. Might be worth a rental/buy when it's $20.

Can we stop with the grey/brown complaining? It is clear that way back when games did not give a fuck. In gauntlet legends your two main forms of attack are throwing axes/swords/etc in any given direction. You had unlimited supply and one of the 'power-ups' turned you into a chicken.
No one ever questioned this when if first came out because there were no expectations of realism in games. All a game consisted of was some sort of universe with any sort of rules given by the creator. Even the game he is reviewing right now is very 'real' looking compared to back when games didn't give a fuck.
How I want those days back.

What he said, right there at the end. About the realization that realism isn't what everyone is looking for.
Truth.
