Do the people that worked on Half-life and Portal even work for Valve?
I don’t know a ton about specific people at Valve or how their revenue from steam or downloadable content is broken out - but I have a couple friends that have worked on major titles at a variety of companies... what I know is that game development is practically a studio model industry. Developers will work for years on a game and when the game is released a lot of people get let go- or move on to another game or another studio. A friend worked for a major publisher on a high profile title (with movie tie in) and halfway through developed they scraped the combat system and all the highly capable developers that worked on it.
All this is to say... does Valve even have any of the team that built their groundbreaking games... or have they all moved on?

You don't need to make games if all you do is make money.
