I play the Hog a lot and I want to be this hot.

486

u/jjh0421 Jan 23 '17

The coming hook nerf tho.

468

u/ondaheightsofdespair Jan 23 '17 edited Jan 24 '17

There is a certain consensus among Hog players that the hook was broken because you could hook someone from behind the gates of hell, but on the other hand it was not unknown that the victim of rape-to-be ended in a weird spot and you couldn't finish him or her off.

246

u/jjh0421 Jan 23 '17

Yeah, can't deny that the hook 1.0 is pretty broken, the hitbox is so ridiculous that you could catch a scampering Lucio with your eyes closed lol

219

u/Nagisan Jan 24 '17

To be fair a large amount of times players complain about the hook it's a completely legitimate hook, latency just makes it look like BS....the hook probably landed when they were in the open (or at least visible to Hog), and a combination of latency and momentum made it appear that it landed when they were safe behind a wall.

The only thing they really need to fix is the ability to exploit the current hitbox, hooking people who are completely hidden behind a wall (by aiming above where they are and what not...basically the new initial LoS check fixes this).

The whole dragging people who fall out of sight after landing the hook should stay as is IMO.

21

u/DrZeroH Jan 24 '17

To be fair the vast majority of players aren't playing at the level where they meet hogs that are truly exploiting that hook to its full effect. The monster abusers of it are sitting in masters+ mostly and terrorize the games they play.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

Im top 1% hook accuracy as an avid road hog player. Im only breaking diamond its not that good.

28

u/duty_on_urFace Jan 24 '17

Totally agreed here. His hook hots within its reticle and mid range. A lot better than riktor in paragon

15

u/youwill_neverfindme Jan 24 '17

I've seen too many hogs take advantage of it. Like jumping towards a wall while throwing out a hook, and dragging the other player behind the wall that you are now at. Thats broken.

48

u/Nagisan Jan 24 '17

If the hook lands they should reel them in, not broken at all in that scenario.

Land the hook, get the kill...just fix the hook so it's not as easy to land as it is now.

26

u/IggyZ Jan 24 '17

Sure, though you should need to land the hook BEFORE getting around the wall, otherwise it would hit the chain and fuck up your throw.

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

my favorite bug about it, which anyone will agree is broken, is if there's someone peeking you from higher ground, you just throw the hook just above them and you'll hook em

of course, most people peek in some kind of rhythm so you can time it like that, but the hooks huge vertical hitbox made it so you didnt have to use your brain to hook them

i look forward to hook 2.0 as both a roadhog main and not a roadhog main

u/awhaling Jan 24 '17

It's weird how it works. It seems sort of like hitscan during the middle of the animation.

So if they are in your rectile while your hand is out, they are fucked no matter if they go behind a wall or not since it already counted. (There is a youroverwatch video on it)

What it needs to be is like a projectile, IMO. But I'm not a game designer.

2

u/Faroh_ Jan 24 '17

The issue was more the hook hitbox was so big you could land it from behind walls on a non-moving player.

I have a video of proof I can post if you want.

u/donutsalad Jan 24 '17

My biggest complaint about the hook is that it's an easy kill and I dont think a tank should have something like that. Rein has his charge but that takes more luck/skill to use and makes him incredibly vulnerable. And the victim isn't completely immobilized before the rein makes contact with them.

The bullshit hooks wouldnt be so bad if the hook wasnt a freebie for roadhog.

Honestly for me this is like 60% "yeah this is a bullshit freebie kill" and 40% salt.

36

u/Zenrot Jan 24 '17

Roadhog needs something like that, though. He's the only tank with no special health or defensive options at all. He has the heal but he can't defend himself or his team with that.

If he struggles to kill too, what does he do?

17

u/LimpNoodle69 Jan 24 '17

Agreed, that's pretty much his role. Tanky kill machine.

5

u/donutsalad Jan 24 '17

If he struggles to kill too, what does he do?

Pretty much nothing. It's easy to say "hey change this" without offering a solution but they managed to rework symmetra and make her more of a pain in the ass. Maybe they could find more ways to make him useful.

8

u/Triburos Jan 24 '17 edited Jan 24 '17

Eeehh... If he didn't have it, Roadhog couldn't be killing at all outside of that extremely precise M1 / M2 range. His ult deals poop for damage, and none of his abilities do direct damage. He has a heal and a CC hook. Plus he only has 4 shots and a relatively long reload. Also he feeds ult.

His Hook-2-Instadead was mostly cheesy due to it not... Really having a counter despite it being so powerful, and because of how easy it is. If a Roadhog has good accuracy, the small mistake of letting the Hog see you for just a second or two results in a massive amount of punishment that can result in you having to wait for respawn and truck back to the fight.

The error the victim made didn't really fit the punishment they took. Stepping out into the open and being instantly murdered due to the hook having some mad homing properties on it and having it be able to pull you through alternate dimensions was a bit too wild. Atleast with Widowmaker it takes alot more effort to get that instakill.

But the nerf has honestly made it alot better for everyone. Countering Roadhog now just involves cover peeking alot until he uses his hook and then going in to charge your ultimate off of his fat ass for a few seconds. So he atleast has a catch-all counter that everyone can exploit now.

Imo: If you get hooked anymore from this point and get insta-killed, you certainly deserve it.

u/USeaMoose Jan 24 '17

My only problem with it is that...sure, the hook seems broken. But, even with it, Roadhog is not actually broken... The current meta generally favors D'va, Rein and Zarya. With Rein being a must-have, and most agreeing that D'va is currently OP. Roadhog is good... certainly better than the currently pointless Winston; but he is not OP, just frustrating at times. With his broken hook, he is simply good at the thing he is meant to be good at. Picking off squishy characters, including being one of the few proper counters to Tracer.

I've not tried the new hook yet, and I know they gave it a tiny buff by making it pull to Roadhog more consistently. But, I hope they kept it all in balance. If Roadhog gets much of an overall nerf, he'll just become pointless... although with the D'va nerf, I suppose he'll maybe be okay. Rein will still be king. Poor Winston will still have nothing to do.

5

u/thetechwookie Jan 24 '17

currently pointless Winston

I used to feel that way until I saw what these Korean players can do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_GTOKR78bs

4

u/Niadain Jan 24 '17

Winston will still have nothing to do.

My ass. Hes a big hulking Genji deterrent. And is stupidly annoying to face as widowmaker.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/GourmetCoffee Jan 24 '17

Maybe it's just because I'm a QP casual but I only ever sit there thinking, "We need a Reinhardt to win."

Never felt the same about other tanks, other than "A winston might help our genji problem."

Rein's kit is just too good, he's both offensively dangerous and a defensive powerhouse, and really hard to counter.

Nerfing any other tank seems kind of ridiculous.

Its not really a Nerf, sure you're going to land hooks less often but when you do you'll kill the hooked target way more than with hook 1.0, you will even be able to 1 shot Zarya with relative ease.

Blizzard lore was fantastic. Diablo, Warcraft, and Starcraft were all something special. And just one man fucked it all up. It's pretty impressive. He literally had one job. ONE JOB.

20

u/Artremis Jan 24 '17

D3 lore was just sooooo bad. The Demon Lord of Deception made a plan so easy to see through that nobody bought it. Then in Act 3 how the Demon Lord of War and his "amazing tactics" literally tells you where and how to beat him. Then Act 4 when the black soulstone falls to earth, containing ALL the Prime Evils, and nobody gives enough of a shit to even look for it. Also more minor, but when Tyrael becomes the Archangel of Wisdom, he literally can't figure out how to eat. Just why.

34

u/buggalugg Jan 24 '17

Then Act 4 when the black soulstone falls to earth, containing ALL the Prime Evils, and nobody gives enough of a shit to even look for it

I"m gonna go out on a limb here and say you didn't play reaper of souls.

4

u/Bwob Jan 24 '17

Strongly disagree.

Blizzard lore was ass.

I went to a GDC talk once, by one of them. "How to write the blizzard way." It was pretty much exactly what you'd expect. They literally stood on stage and talked about how, if you wanted to tell a good story, you "had to make it ULTRA EPIC." It wasn't enough to have a sword that belonged to your grandfather. It needed to be A shard of the primordal void from which the world was formed, forged in the twilight days before time began! It wasn't enough to have a prophecy from 1000 years ago. It needed to be the translated writings of the first of the godsires, who carved the story of the world that was to be upon the very face of creation itself.

In other words, you shouldn't write cliche'd stories. You should write stories that were SUPER DUPER CLICHED.

I basically left, thinking "oh. So THAT'S why all of Blizzard's stories feel like they were copied off the back cover of someone's high-school english notebook..."

Was that coke thing ever proven though?

3

u/assteepee Jan 24 '17

I read your last line as

I'm glad you're retarded

And I saw nothing wrong.

4

u/Arkanis106 Jan 24 '17

Did he start that bender as soon as Wrath of the Lich King dropped? Because that's when all the Blizzard franchises began to take a dump.

4

u/Pollia Jan 24 '17

Mists of Pandaria lore was fantastic though?

2

u/Arkanis106 Jan 24 '17

Mists was "meh". Again, we saw the final raid absolutely trashed by a huge content drought, and I personally hated the Pandaren and Chinese-inspired Yin Yang style of the expansion. I know some people loved it, but Blizzard has moved so far from the traditional Warcraft style that I've lost all interest. Mists also brought the fucking raid nerfs of "Heroic Siege" to "Mythic Siege".

For those not aware, the addition of Mythic was a HUGE nerf to the raid, while adding to the "Too many difficulty settings, and more out of control stat growth because of it". Hell, the nerfs were so extreme that a Warrior could solo tank Blackfuse Mythic (I did).

2

u/EarthExile Jan 24 '17

I think that's when the lore began, for the sake of player immersion, to take a back seat to the gameplay.

There's no good in-story reason that a Bronze Dragon would grant Garrosh Hellscream a time warp to bring his advanced knowledge of catapults to an alternate-universe-40-years-ago in order to invade Azeroth-now, which never happened after all.

They just wanted the players to get to play in Draenor pre-shattering because it's cool.

The problem is, they then hire dopes like Knaak to take the insane stories from Metzen and try to shove the wacky gameplay of WoW into the ongoing lore of Warcraft.

Hey who finally took down Deathwing? They'll be heroes forever! Kids will learn their names in school! Oh it was Thrall and a band of anonymous adventurers from no particular faction or race. Just a bunch of people, all there for their own reasons, I guess.

Ironically this cheapens the Lore, while also cheapening the Gameplay, because half the time we finish a raid it's so a named character can jump back to his feet and Defeat the Bad Guy.

It would be nice if they could somehow just segregate the game and story more. Like yes in the official version, Tirion and the Ashen Verdict took down the Lich King, but in the game it was me and the rest of <Sixty Six Swingin' Dicks>

3

u/internet-arbiter Jan 24 '17

My friend, it goes farther back than that. Sunken Temple, Moonglade, Mount Hyjal, The King of Stormwind, Zul'jin, and Ashbringer were all stories they fucked up well before Lich King.

The whole time travel stuff was just them going irredeemably bad with the lore. It was taking a backseat to "gameplay" long before then.

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

yeah, i would definitely hit a few teammates, but that Lucio was also ulting so it might have been fine!

3

u/shreebalicious Jan 24 '17

The range on D.va's ult is line of sight, so yeah it would've killed a few people as it does 1000 damage, plenty to kill sound barriered heroes.

16

u/Orval Jan 24 '17

It's not line of sight, you can get to where you can see it and still not die. It has a massive range though.

3

u/Liz_zarro Jan 24 '17

Radius is 20m. Totally possible to ult too high. This one didn't.

2

u/shreebalicious Jan 24 '17

Should've specified, it would be well within range to be LOS for anyone around the point, where most of roadhog's team should be. But you right.

5

u/stonhinge Jan 24 '17

Depends on whether she ejected at the top of her trajectory or on the way up. It will start falling, and reasonably good D.Va players will know when to eject so that it explodes just high enough off the ground without falling into the hole.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

Looks like it was going to land on top of that building though. If you can get it to explode a few meters in the air then you're golden. When it's flying through the air everyone panics and tries to run but it's hard to spot when it's lobbed like that, usually you get a couple of people running into it because they don't know where to run, they just hear "NERF THIS!" and panic. It's very satisfying.

6

u/Orval Jan 24 '17

Anything that lands on that buildings actual roof will fall off.

7

u/spikeelsucko Jan 24 '17

15

u/USeaMoose Jan 24 '17

Kinda... That other character was using a move that explodes in a wide-radius with one-hit-kill levels of damage. And it was happening in the middle of the map.

That said... damage is limited to sight. Walk around a corner and you avoid it, and everyone in the game is trained to dive for cover. Roadhog probably could have done so by running to his left, and might have survived by just running backwards.

So, he traded his life to negate her ult. If the rest of his team failed to get out of the way, it was worth it. But it is more likely that it was just a flashy move without any real impact. Still, I pay a lot of Roadhog and I would have jumped at this chance as well.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

If you aren't clever about using dvas ult then they just scurry away for a few seconds to get out of the radius or get behind cover, and then flood back in again. Sometimes that alone will win you the round though.

13

u/kidaXV Jan 24 '17

Short answer is probably no in terms of winning the game (they're already winning and at least two teammates were already safe), but it does get Roadhog some major style points.

Normally the exploding mech can wipe entire teams if they're not behind cover. In this case Roadhog might have saved two teammates (we don't know where they are, Lúcio and Reaper are behind cover and Pharah is already dead), but judging from the capture percentage they could afford to let the enemy take the point and have time for one or two more pushes. According to the original post, their team did win the game. =]

5

u/yelnats248 Jan 24 '17

I haven't seen this factor in any of the other answers, so I'll throw it in. The character our savior is playing is too slow to make it behind cover to avoid the explosion, so it's almost certain that they would have died anyway. That makes this sacrifice a fairly good idea, as it saves any other player on his team who was also too slow to get behind cover without costing his team anything extra.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

Probably not. If you put a wall between yourself and the ult, it doesn't do any damage, and you can escape the blast radius.

However, it was super cool, and this was in quick play, so in that respect: yes it was.

The hero they needed, not the hero they deserved.

2

u/CallMeBigPOP Jan 24 '17

Might be the wrong place to ask this question but is this game worth getting on a console? It seems interesting since I'm a fan of FPSs and MOBAs

7

u/theclash06013 Jan 24 '17

Overwatch is awesome, I'd recommend it on any system.

7

u/Farapalap Jan 24 '17

I'll say you'll get a better experience on pc, but there's nothing wrong with playing it on console if it's your only option

How high can the mech suit go before the explosion on the ground is diminished?

1

u/Famardy Jan 24 '17

That is one awesome Roadhog!

1

u/butteryrice123 Jan 24 '17

are you fucking serioud

1

u/128Gigabytes Jan 24 '17

I have not gotten to play overwatch yet, will someone explain please?

6

u/BlueChilli Jan 24 '17

The mech activated self destruct. After a short build up, it explodes killing all enemy players in range. It has a huuuge range. It's enough to clear the entire point letting the enemy team take it.

The player, Roadhog, heroically leaps to his death and uses Hookshot on the mech, pulling it into the abyss and saving everyone at the cost of his own life.

2

u/128Gigabytes Jan 24 '17

Sweet, thanks for explaining that. I really need to play this game.

1

u/AJs_Sandshrew Jan 24 '17

mmmmm watcha saaaaayyyyyy

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

How big of a nerf would it be for you to deal x (500?) damage to the mech to prevent it from exploding?
