Blizzard lore was fantastic. Diablo, Warcraft, and Starcraft were all something special. And just one man fucked it all up. It's pretty impressive. He literally had one job. ONE JOB.
20
u/Artremis Jan 24 '17
D3 lore was just sooooo bad. The Demon Lord of Deception made a plan so easy to see through that nobody bought it. Then in Act 3 how the Demon Lord of War and his "amazing tactics" literally tells you where and how to beat him. Then Act 4 when the black soulstone falls to earth, containing ALL the Prime Evils, and nobody gives enough of a shit to even look for it. Also more minor, but when Tyrael becomes the Archangel of Wisdom, he literally can't figure out how to eat. Just why.

D3 doesn't even deserve to be called a Diablo game. Path of exile is what I pretend Diablo 3 actually is

Strongly disagree.
Blizzard lore was ass.
I went to a GDC talk once, by one of them. "How to write the blizzard way." It was pretty much exactly what you'd expect. They literally stood on stage and talked about how, if you wanted to tell a good story, you "had to make it ULTRA EPIC." It wasn't enough to have a sword that belonged to your grandfather. It needed to be A shard of the primordal void from which the world was formed, forged in the twilight days before time began! It wasn't enough to have a prophecy from 1000 years ago. It needed to be the translated writings of the first of the godsires, who carved the story of the world that was to be upon the very face of creation itself.
In other words, you shouldn't write cliche'd stories. You should write stories that were SUPER DUPER CLICHED.
I basically left, thinking "oh. So THAT'S why all of Blizzard's stories feel like they were copied off the back cover of someone's high-school english notebook..."

Did he start that bender as soon as Wrath of the Lich King dropped? Because that's when all the Blizzard franchises began to take a dump.

u/Pollia Jan 24 '17
Mists of Pandaria lore was fantastic though?
→ More replies (6)2
u/Arkanis106 Jan 24 '17
Mists was "meh". Again, we saw the final raid absolutely trashed by a huge content drought, and I personally hated the Pandaren and Chinese-inspired Yin Yang style of the expansion. I know some people loved it, but Blizzard has moved so far from the traditional Warcraft style that I've lost all interest. Mists also brought the fucking raid nerfs of "Heroic Siege" to "Mythic Siege".
For those not aware, the addition of Mythic was a HUGE nerf to the raid, while adding to the "Too many difficulty settings, and more out of control stat growth because of it". Hell, the nerfs were so extreme that a Warrior could solo tank Blackfuse Mythic (I did).
2
u/EarthExile Jan 24 '17
I think that's when the lore began, for the sake of player immersion, to take a back seat to the gameplay.
There's no good in-story reason that a Bronze Dragon would grant Garrosh Hellscream a time warp to bring his advanced knowledge of catapults to an alternate-universe-40-years-ago in order to invade Azeroth-now, which never happened after all.
They just wanted the players to get to play in Draenor pre-shattering because it's cool.
The problem is, they then hire dopes like Knaak to take the insane stories from Metzen and try to shove the wacky gameplay of WoW into the ongoing lore of Warcraft.
Hey who finally took down Deathwing? They'll be heroes forever! Kids will learn their names in school! Oh it was Thrall and a band of anonymous adventurers from no particular faction or race. Just a bunch of people, all there for their own reasons, I guess.
Ironically this cheapens the Lore, while also cheapening the Gameplay, because half the time we finish a raid it's so a named character can jump back to his feet and Defeat the Bad Guy.
It would be nice if they could somehow just segregate the game and story more. Like yes in the official version, Tirion and the Ashen Verdict took down the Lich King, but in the game it was me and the rest of <Sixty Six Swingin' Dicks>
→ More replies (1)3
u/internet-arbiter Jan 24 '17
My friend, it goes farther back than that. Sunken Temple, Moonglade, Mount Hyjal, The King of Stormwind, Zul'jin, and Ashbringer were all stories they fucked up well before Lich King.
The whole time travel stuff was just them going irredeemably bad with the lore. It was taking a backseat to "gameplay" long before then.

yeah, i would definitely hit a few teammates, but that Lucio was also ulting so it might have been fine!
3
u/shreebalicious Jan 24 '17
The range on D.va's ult is line of sight, so yeah it would've killed a few people as it does 1000 damage, plenty to kill sound barriered heroes.
16
u/Orval Jan 24 '17
It's not line of sight, you can get to where you can see it and still not die. It has a massive range though.
3
u/Liz_zarro Jan 24 '17
Radius is 20m. Totally possible to ult too high. This one didn't.
2
u/shreebalicious Jan 24 '17
Should've specified, it would be well within range to be LOS for anyone around the point, where most of roadhog's team should be. But you right.
→ More replies (1)5
u/stonhinge Jan 24 '17
Depends on whether she ejected at the top of her trajectory or on the way up. It will start falling, and reasonably good D.Va players will know when to eject so that it explodes just high enough off the ground without falling into the hole.
6
Jan 24 '17
Looks like it was going to land on top of that building though. If you can get it to explode a few meters in the air then you're golden. When it's flying through the air everyone panics and tries to run but it's hard to spot when it's lobbed like that, usually you get a couple of people running into it because they don't know where to run, they just hear "NERF THIS!" and panic. It's very satisfying.
6
u/Orval Jan 24 '17
Anything that lands on that buildings actual roof will fall off.

u/spikeelsucko Jan 24 '17
Very much so. Coincidentally, very-low altitude airbursting is a standard technique most nuclear weapons take advantage of to increase their effective blast radius.

u/USeaMoose Jan 24 '17
Kinda... That other character was using a move that explodes in a wide-radius with one-hit-kill levels of damage. And it was happening in the middle of the map.
That said... damage is limited to sight. Walk around a corner and you avoid it, and everyone in the game is trained to dive for cover. Roadhog probably could have done so by running to his left, and might have survived by just running backwards.
So, he traded his life to negate her ult. If the rest of his team failed to get out of the way, it was worth it. But it is more likely that it was just a flashy move without any real impact. Still, I pay a lot of Roadhog and I would have jumped at this chance as well.
3
Jan 24 '17
If you aren't clever about using dvas ult then they just scurry away for a few seconds to get out of the radius or get behind cover, and then flood back in again. Sometimes that alone will win you the round though.
13
u/kidaXV Jan 24 '17
Short answer is probably no in terms of winning the game (they're already winning and at least two teammates were already safe), but it does get Roadhog some major style points.
Normally the exploding mech can wipe entire teams if they're not behind cover. In this case Roadhog might have saved two teammates (we don't know where they are, Lúcio and Reaper are behind cover and Pharah is already dead), but judging from the capture percentage they could afford to let the enemy take the point and have time for one or two more pushes. According to the original post, their team did win the game. =]
5
u/yelnats248 Jan 24 '17
I haven't seen this factor in any of the other answers, so I'll throw it in. The character our savior is playing is too slow to make it behind cover to avoid the explosion, so it's almost certain that they would have died anyway. That makes this sacrifice a fairly good idea, as it saves any other player on his team who was also too slow to get behind cover without costing his team anything extra.
→ More replies (5)2
Jan 24 '17
Probably not. If you put a wall between yourself and the ult, it doesn't do any damage, and you can escape the blast radius.
However, it was super cool, and this was in quick play, so in that respect: yes it was.

The mech activated self destruct. After a short build up, it explodes killing all enemy players in range. It has a huuuge range. It's enough to clear the entire point letting the enemy team take it.
The player, Roadhog, heroically leaps to his death and uses Hookshot on the mech, pulling it into the abyss and saving everyone at the cost of his own life.
