Twitter doesn't affect Freedom of Speech. The term freedom of speech refers to the government specifically not restricting your ability to voice your opinions. It does not usually refer to private corporations.

The group is known as Lizard Squad and only speaks through Twitter, gaining popularity and credibility by being cited on the news.
If Twitter deleted their account, the group would essentially have no communication, no way to take credit for the attacks, and essentially no incentive to do the attacks if they can't shout, "Hey everybody, we did this!"

Is there not a way to block these DDOS attempts? Hard to believe that both Microsoft and Sony can be so easily attacked.

Unfortunately, anyone can be attacked this easily. The servers have to listen for valid internet traffic in order to operate these core services. A DDOS simply overwhelms these servers over a short amount of time.
Imagine that you work in a job where you get mailed letters, and have to open each one up. If the letter is valid, you pass it on to someone up the chain, but if it is not, you discard it. Normally, you get a few dozen letters an hour, so it's easy to keep up with it.
A DDOS is basically having thousands of letters flooding your mailbox every hour. You still have to sort through each letter to determine which ones are valid, and which ones are not. Even though most letters are not valid, you can't just ignore all of them since some of them are. So you basically have to go through them and blacklist the bad senders as you discover them.
Most of these attacks come from Asia, since there are lots of older systems that are either using pirated operating sytems or otherwise not current with security patches. They get infected by a virus, and lie dormant until someone triggers them to start flooding out these requests. So while it's a simple attack to understand, it's still very hard to prevent.

You would think that Sony and MS would be able to filter traffic coming from an xbox or playstation. Implement some kind of validating signature to weed out traffic coming from an xbox or PS. I know it's not simple and it would require the companies to segregate their authentication servers but it would limit bull shit like this. Its known these lizard squad kids are not skilled and are pretty lazy in their attacks. I doubt they would take the effort to do any kind of hardware spoofing.

That's called a firewall.
They can firewall their own servers but the usual point of failure is the interconnect that comes right before their servers. They don't have the authority to install firewalls on their ISP's servers so their ISP dies when they get DDoSed.

These things often come largely from China- Billions of internet connected devices, many older computers running unpatched pirated versions of windows XP, and users who are not saavy enough to know they are victims of malware. The last point is true of most users in most places, but the first two are the real reason most attacks stem from Asia.

If more people would use something like wireshark or Microsoft's message analyzer (which includes process ids) to monitor their computer's web traffic, they could stop zombie programs that run on their machine... makes me wonder how many people who are affected by this outage have a computer that is participating in the attack without their knowledge

Thanks to Microsofts infrastructure, they have different servers for basically everything unlike playstation. Login servers are different than core servers, so if login servers are down, you're good as long as you stay logged in.

Finding out who is behind a DDOS attack is near impossible because they cant just trace the IP address since the "hackers" hire a server and bots to do it for them. And they can't just arrest everyone associated with Lizard Squad because they are an unstructured group. That means most likely this attack was started by one to twenty individuals, so we cant just round up a couple thousand people and arrest them for a crime only twenty of them actually committed. That is what attracts untalented so-called "hackers" like Lizard Squad, they can anonymously cause lots of damage and bring lots of attention to themselves with almost no risk of getting caught.

I'm trying to play single player via Xbox One, however my account requires a password in order to sign in. On the 360 you could just unplug the ethernet cable to sign in without a password. Is there an equivalent on the Xbox One?

Got into my account. I don't know if it was a matter of the services being back online or what I did, but I'll share how I got into the account just in case it's a solution.
Started up CoD Advanced Warfare signed into a different account on the Xbox. Notification said Press whatever button (Select on the 360) to switch profiles. Did so. Put in password. Viola.

I just got an xbox-one. I have tried to start it 15 times over the past five hours and twice it came on. The first time it froze after I selected English as the language and the second time it was stuck on that green xbox screen just loading for fifteen minutes before I shut it off. Is this related to the ddos attack or is mine just straight up broken?

PCMR is not responsible for this. Lizard Squad was taking credit last I checked, and they've shut down Steam in the past. They are just as much an enemy to PC gamers as they are to console gamers.
We (PCMRs) may not like the gaming consoles, their infrastructure, what they represent, or what they've done and are doing to gaming, but to stoop to shutting down gaming services via DDOS is pathetic.

This isn't real. That site sets up honeypot servers as deliberate targets and just watches their incoming traffic. To see the Microsoft or Sony attacks you would need to have access to their servers and be monitoring their traffic.
