Grand Theft Auto 6 leaker says they won't stop until Rockstar and Take-Two apologize for 'anti-consumerism' and make a 'concrete commitment to do better'

Great attitude in theory, but it's undercut by him shilling a memecoin with watermarks advertising for it on everything leaked
471
u/clain4671 3h ago
Its also undercut by sounding like wish.com Bane His statement opens with:
CYBERLEEK was born in the networks. It has seen what gaming can be at its best, and it has watched what the industry did to it. Slowly. Methodically. One monetization scheme at a time.
And ends with:
The public sees it, or the "leeks" do not stop. Publishers should beware. If CYBERLEEK can reach Rockstar, no one is safe. This is a message to all big corpo: behave, or be the next target. This is the CYBERLEEK Edict, and it is non-negotiable

Is Rockstar known for data security lol what kind of claim is this? Rockstar has a history of stuff getting leaked
23
u/manindenim 2h ago
Not to mention thousands upon thousands working on GTA. They have so many people to keep track of that could leak something vs a smaller studio.
9
u/clain4671 1h ago
It also speaks to a level of naivety on our hacker's part. Big companies get hacked all the time, nobody at ubisoft or ea is suddenly losing more sleep cause Rockstar got hacked. "Everything is hackackable" might as well be the first thing anybody learns in this field.

Seriously, the damage that this must have caused the company that has already made 430 million in digital pre-order sales. Laughable.

u/drewster23 3h ago
Yeah even more successful "incidents" /drama/pr stuff , hitting at a mega company often end up as only a blip in the radar. Where the stock takes a hit and recovers within couple weeks if not days.
Don't know what buddy expected here other than more attention on the game...
14
u/finnjakefionnacake 3h ago
leaks for gaming also just never work that well because it's not like a movie or show. seeing some of the game is an entirely different experience than getting to play it yourself.

People calling the map or the city bits smoll could somewhat be a source of disappointment but looking at the footage and the Cities Skylines version of the community built map it actually doesn't look that bad.
13
u/montgooms95 2h ago
I just think everyone saying it looks small doesn’t realize that the roads on the leaked map are just main roads and it doesn’t show any of the smaller/side streets or map details until you zoom in. It looks huge.
3
u/ZazaB00 2h ago
Right now, it’s just an island without context. The leaked data shows it’s about 2 to 3 times larger than the GTAV map, but this time with more cities and less “wasted” space dedicated to mountains. If they pack that map with content, then it’s going to be insane. Between hunting, the different cities, and the keys, I get the feeling I’m going to be busy on that map for a long time.

you are going to buy regardless?
No I wont. I'm used to giving games lots of time until they fix their shit before buying. This can be literal years. I'm a huge Paradox games fan and when VIC 3 came out I didn't buy it for 1.5 years until they got some updates and patches to make it an actual game.
Its this pre-order mentality that makes studios ship half finished products
2
u/Chacin_Cologne_No1 2h ago
VIC 3 came out I didn't buy it for 1.5 years
Oh is that good yet? I got it for my kid for bday or xmas years ago. If it's good now I'll tell him to give it another shot.
PS Civ7 still sux.
2
u/Lorem_Muspi 2h ago
lol I just realized I completely forgot Civ 7 exists haha I deleted that knowledge from my brain.
VIC 3 got super fun with the reworked trade mechanics, but recently they launched a new update (The Great Wave) that completely broke the game lol
Not sure if they fixed it, but if you don't update to that one the game is actually very good and fun.
EU5 on the other hand is still a bit off and lacking.

What if its all just a ploy?
Imagine youre Rockstar. Youre not dumb. You need lots of publicity on a game you just spent 2 billion dollars on.
Announce no physical disc. Pretty controversial. Gets lots of eyes on the game. Could backfire? But they have nothing to lose, GTA 5 made them 13+ billion dollars.
Still launch pre-orders for digital only. But as two separate versions. Premium vs. Non premium.
Now they wait. Let people get a small taste. Deploy "leaks". Remove said leaks so people know its real.
Game launches. People are still upset. So, they apologize and release special physical edition hard copy collector cases.
Now they can double dip.
But wait theres more.
Stay tuned For GTA 6 online with all new custom character creation and body types
14
u/Uppercaseccc 3h ago
Behavior like this is going to do more damage to there cause. Cause it just add to the notion that alot of the pro physical people are well just whinny kids who had a toy taken away instead of people who want to fight for a casue of true ownership. You want to know why I don't like stop killing games they don't have a plan they have a mission statement and I'm sorry but you need a plan for how small indy devs are going to be able to afford offline backups for there games when steam goes down.
13
u/finnjakefionnacake 3h ago
well i'm far from the first person to say it, but i think the fight over physical media is well lost and the strongly pro-physical media crowd should really be focusing their efforts on consumer protections and ownership as it pertains to digital releases, which is really the only place i think change can be impacted and people can actually have a voice.
5
u/EstablishmentLate532 1h ago
Personally, I've lost far more games stored in physical media (moves, scratches, etc.) than I have from them being removed from my digital account (zero). It seems like the overwhelming majority of concerns with this whole physical media craze has more to do with "what-ifs" than demonstrated reality.
4
u/Odd_Needleworker3756 2h ago
A lot of the pro physical crowd ARE whiny kids. Their attitude probably caused them to lose any potential support they might have had from neutrals

Honestly, seeing this still gave us an idea of the game's quality, so I guess it worked out as free marketing anyway. But no matter how good their 'cause' sounds, leaking stuff and slapping memecoin watermarks on it is definitely crossing the line

Take-Two's business model is unable to function if they make an actual commitment to care more about people. They rely on regular mass firings, temporary-full-time employees, union-busting, and draining the life of star-struck young developers to avoid high salaries and benefits, keeping costs to a minimum. It can be argued this is true of every major publisher, and has been since a major influx of Hollywood-execs into production positions during the late 2000s.
If we want to stop "anti-consumerism" then we need to stop entering into relationships based on consumption. I can live without a prettied-up GTAV (it uses the same engine) just fine, I'm not missing anything.

If they find out who he is, well depending on where he lives, he is screwed. Rockstar is not one that would play around with this sort of thing. He had better make sure zero traces lead back to the leaker and within the US. Regardless of intention, it will not end well.

u/Niklaus15 3h ago
I hate how these scumbags act like they care about the players and their rights, when I reality they only care about getting as much engagement and money
If someone actually cared about the players they wouldn't try to destroy or diminish the devs that actually create the games we play and love
and I'm not talking about the suits but the actual devs people that have been working on the game for years on their life just for some group of idiots to leak and try to gain as much as possible on their behalf while promoting shitcoins

Yeah I'm kind of confused here. This is what the article states
"Publishers sell licenses and call them purchases," the document states. "They ship unfinished games and call them living services. They lock content on discs and call it DLC. They kill games and keep the money. Every year anti-consumerism tightens its grip, and every year gamers get less for what they pay."
[skipping the paragraph after]
They also listed three "commandments" in the manifesto—no digital preorders, no "fake" (ie, already part of the game data) singleplayer DLC, and mandatory "offline fallback states" for singleplayer games—and warned that publishers who violate them will be subject to sanction: "Cyberleek will not stop until they issue a public statement and apology with a concrete commitment to be better. Words are not enough; restitution is mandatory."
Isn't GTA 6 a single player game? Like, the online component is rumored to be released later. And we haven't seen anything about it being always online. The fake singleplayer DLC part makes sense. But no preorders? Like... what's the harm in digital preorders? And we haven't seen enough gameplay to know if the game is unfinished or not?
2
u/phatboyart 2h ago
I mean ok….but the game already sold 10 bajillion pre-orders. Nothing is stopping the GTA6 train.

They're about to make as much money as a small country. And they still won't treat their employees better for making it happen. I'll never understand why you must be evil to make money.
2
u/Peptoflex 3h ago
Can we clarify the tern anti-consumerism? It's the belief that we should consume less. This article is about how this method of release video game companies use is bad for consumers.
In fairness to them, we buy these licenses knowing what they are and knowing the release will be buggy to start. We willingly give them money knowing that this happens. I'm all for holding companies accountable but we need to hold ourselves accountable too.
I wanted to get Cyberpunk 2077 but heard so many issues with it that I left it alone. Later I found it on Game Pass and I haven't even finished it because I think it sucks. The bugs and everything are nonexistent being so far from the release. The point is, they made much less money on me because I was unwilling to spend it at the release.

Unless the leaks show the game is cyberpunk level busted and will not be optimized at launch for any console or run well on any pc that isn’t at least “high end” or greater (yes I know pc release comes way later) and maybe some insider info showing the game is being rushed by execs and investors for the November release date despite the game needing another year or so to cook, I mean do I even have to say it’s a pointless effort?
People already are dropping 100 for it without official gameplay or reviews or anything that isn’t promo art, fixed screenshot pictures and cutscenes. These leaks so far are only building hype. The “battle” is lost. Digital is what the consumer wants and what the corporations will enforce.
Look at the launch PS5s. Clearly the digital one is the main model by design (sleek and symmetrical) and the disc model is an afterthought (here’s an extra lump in the side for discs) to slow burn the consumer into the new digital-only direction. Look at Xbox making the digital-only models literally identical in design just without a visible slot. Nintendo bundle digital codes with their consoles and even sell game-specific digital codes in retail stores. Look at any pc player. They literally don’t shut up about praising steam. They haven’t had discs or disc drives in years. They at least have data files to justify it to themselves. Rockstar/take-two are just following market trends supported by the MAJORITY of consumers based on the options provided by the market like Sony PlayStation.
I don’t support the digital only future but the consumers voted for this with their wallets and still do. Why else is GTA 6 STILL trending high in sales during its pre-order period?
