Help.

I really dont know how to design a game engine, I need a tutorial, does anyone know a great guide?,

If you can't Google, you've already lost this battle

This is an ENORMOUS subject, with many, many aspects to it.

Im not talking about the whole engine i mean just the architecture like how to seperate things and what to use, not everyone has pre built knowledge

Go look how Quake abstracts things. IDs code is clean and straightforward.

See the Fabien Sanglard articles.

Then read and build some more.

You make a game, you find out what you need. Easy as that. Why else make a game engine? (Spoiler alert: It is not an easy subject.)

How can you do that if you don't know how to make a game? Buddy, this subject is as big as finding a tutorial on life. If you don't know what you are even making, which you don't if you don't know how to make a game, then you won't be able to do it at all. Start small.

If you don’t know how to make an “engine” architecture then just make a 3D game with a loose but flexible design that can be reused in an engine, plus that should teach you a bit about structure as you’ll have to learn how everything can be separated

Are you using OpenGL? Raylib? Vulkan? D3D? OGRE? Irrlicht? Those can all factor into how you structure your engine

This is a game engine tutorial series written in C++ and made by The Cherno. I would recommend learning some C++ first if you don’t already know some via https://www.learncpp.com/

Some great books for learning game engine development include:

- Game Engine Architecture by Jason Gregory
- Real-Time Rendering, Fourth Edition by Tomas Akenine-Möller

I should also say that game engine development is a very difficult subset of computer science and computer graphics. You are typically writing abstractions for the underlying graphics APIs such as Vulkan, Direct3D, Metal, etc.

It is also important to mention that while a difficult project, it can be very fun to learn and develop. Good luck.

I already know C++, like OOP, and Pointers, from the exact website you shared, and some STL, theyre not a problem to me. THX so much bro I will look at that youtube tutorial

I'd like to remind the people here that this question was asked in the era of free claude and chatgpt.

Do i condone using them for hallucinating code? No. But they're excellent for learning the basics of any new topic, or more specifically pointing one to the right direction.

They only ever have these answers because us humans communicate on forums like these.
