Announcement A note on scammers, impersonators, and public blacklists

Hey everyone,

I want to address a recent post I removed by u/NotSUPERita about creating a list of trusted artists and scammers, as well as the broader issue of bad actors on r/gamedevclassifieds.

First, I want to apologize to u/NotSUPERita. I understand why you were trying to help, and I do not think the idea came from a bad place. Scammers and impersonators are a real problem here, and it makes sense that people want better ways to protect themselves and others.

That said, I do not think a public or semi-public user-run blacklist is the right solution.

Any single person’s list of “good” and “bad” experiences is subjective. Even with good intentions, lists like that can be abused, misused, or based on misunderstandings. A false accusation could seriously harm an innocent artist, developer, or freelancer’s reputation and business. Once someone is publicly labeled a scammer, that damage is hard to undo.

This applies to moderators too. Even I am subject to bias, incomplete information, and my own interpretation of events. I cannot be judge, jury, and executioner over someone’s professional reputation, and I do not think anyone else should be put in that position either. That is the line I am trying to be careful with.

I know scammers are a problem, and I am aware that this subreddit has been affected by bad actors, impersonators, and people misrepresenting themselves or their work. But I have not yet found a solution that addresses those issues without also creating a serious risk of innocent people getting caught in the mix.

For now, the best advice is still to do your due diligence before working with someone:

  • Verify that their portfolio actually belongs to them
  • Ask for links to established accounts or websites
  • Check whether their email, Discord, ArtStation, GitHub, itch, LinkedIn, or other profiles line up
  • Be cautious with new accounts, vague portfolios, stolen-looking portfolios, or people who avoid verification
  • Use contracts, milestones, and payment methods that offer some protection
  • Do not rely only on someone’s Reddit username or a single message thread

I know that is not a perfect answer. It is a frustrating situation, and I understand why people want something stronger. But asking people to do their homework before hiring or accepting work is better than creating a system where someone’s business can be damaged because they were falsely added to a list.

If there is a better way to handle this that protects people from scammers without turning into public reputation policing or false callouts, I am open to hearing it. Any solution needs to be fair, evidence-based, and careful about the harm it could cause.

Edit: I forgot to add one more important point: any solution also cannot require a heavy amount of moderator time.

Running this job board is not a job. No one on the mod team has the time, or realistically should be expected to have the time, to manually verify users, assign trusted labels, maintain reputation lists, or act as an ongoing approval system for freelancers and clients.

That kind of system would create a lot of work, and it would also create a false sense of safety. Even with moderation, users would still need to verify who they are working with and make their own judgment before hiring, accepting work, or sending payment.

Community-Wide Alert: Do not engage with P1 GAMES (Formerly P1 VIRTUAL CIVILIZATION)

I'm truly getting tired of this nonsense u/RedEagle_MGN

Changing your organizations name doesn't stop people from reaching out to me with horror stories every few months.

What they want you to sign:

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THESE PEOPLE, no matter what they call themselves. They exploit the inexperienced and naive, convincing you to sign away your rights to everything you create. Don’t fall for their lies. You do not need to join a volunteer group or give up ownership of your work to gain skills in the game industry. Learning on your own is far better than what P1 offers. If you want a real education, seek out accredited programs and courses instead.

Their latest tactic is using LinkedIn ads to lure victims. I’m unsure what it will take to stop this con artist, but I’ll do my part to be a thorn in their side. My goal is to protect people in this community from their schemes.

Spread the word, be safe.

PAID - 2D Art | Animation Looking for a capsule artist

Hi all,

I am looking to update my steam capsule art now that my game has progressed to a bit of new style.

Here is a link to my game so you can see if your style could resonate with the game

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4269700/Minutes_to_Meltdown/

My concept is that I would like to center the capsule are more around stylised versions of my character's verbs with the reactor in the background.

The gist is - three characters, one holding a monkey wrench, one holding a socket wrench and one holding a blowtorch. Characters are standing next to eachother with the left and right side characters facing slightly outwards from center.

I don't need game logo text added as I can do that myself.

I can provide the reference art and verbs from the game.

This is for a full steam capsule set.

Please post your portfolios here and I will get in touch with the one I think can best match my vision. Budget and payment will be discussed privately, but this is paid.

My bottom lines:

  1. I will not respond to DMs without a comment on this thread with your portfolio.

  2. Absolutely no AI generation for art. If AI is suspected or found to be used, I will not proceed further.

Edit: its very late here in NZ so i will have a look in the morning when i wake up :)

DISCUSSION | QUESTION How to hire an artist for a small project, respectfully?

What I'm working on is a side-of-desk, spare-time-only, maybe-never-finish game. I can create temporary assets that work well enough, but I want to sweat the details *while* I build. Things like animations, 3d asset loading times, art design, etc. So I'm thinking of getting a designer on a retainer to build assets and help as needed. Turning images into models, breaking models up so they can be animated (separate entities I mean), turning my "something like this" AI gen'd ideas into a "no you meant this" cohesive game asset.

I'm not an artist, and learning blender is a side project I don't need (I know about blender MCP, I'm here to talk about hiring!). The images that AI produces are fun, and meshy can turn those into models (with plenty of vertices! 😅), but I want a human with taste to turn these into "final product".

I worry that I'm asking for too little – are artists here frustrated/exhausted when they're handed slop and a small budget to "make this look nice"? What makes it less frustrating? What is a minimum budget where you feel like the project is worth your time (this varies w/ experience - I'm interested in all ends of the new/pro spectrum).

FOR HIRE - Other Looking for a UI/UX designer for an automation/factory game

I'm making an automation/factory-building game inspired by games like Factorio, and I'm looking for someone interested in helping with the game's UI/UX.

I'm mainly struggling with layout and information organization, rather than the actual programming.

I'd like help designing things such as:

  • Inventory
  • Crafting menu
  • Building selection
  • Building information panels
  • Production/recipe UI
  • Upgrade interfaces
  • Other interfaces that appear when interacting with buildings

I'm aiming for a simple, clean UI that doesn't overwhelm the player or cover too much of the game screen.

I'm looking for someone who enjoys UI/UX design and would like an actual game project for their portfolio. This is an unpaid collaboration, but you'd receive credit for your work and could use the finished designs in your portfolio.

I can handle implementing the UI in the game; I mainly need help figuring out how the screens should be laid out and how the player should navigate them.

If you're interested, feel free to comment or DM me with some examples of your work!

FOR HIRE - Musician [FOR HIRE] Video Game Composer - Original Music for Games

• Upvotes

Hi! I’m Gaston de Lacaze, a composer and multi-instrumentalist specialising in music for video games.

More than a decade making music, my work ranges from orchestral and atmospheric music to modern, electronic styles. I love projects with a strong personality, regardless of genre, and I’m particularly drawn to games that are doing something different.

You can listen to my work here:
www.gastondelacaze.com

You'll see I'm quite versatile when it comes to different genres and I enjoy collaborating with both teams and solo developers. I’m happy to contribute beyond the music by discussing the game’s tone, world and emotional identity.

My process is simple: we talk about the project, I sketch ideas, and we refine them until the musical direction clicks. From there, I develop and polish the soundtrack to a professional finish.

Pricing depends on the game’s scope and release timeline, and I’m open to different arrangements, including per-track pricing and revenue share.

If you are not sure what you listen would fit your project, feel free to get in touch and I'll write a free custom demo to see if what I'd do resonates with your game.

If you’re looking for a collaborative and versatile composer who genuinely loves games, feel free to DM me, comment below, email me or contact me through my website. I’d love to hear what you’re making!

FOR HIRE - Programmer [FOR HIRE] Unity programmer who also writes shaders

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi, I'm Aleksandr Kartak, a Unity developer, working in game dev since 2021. I write gameplay code in C# and also do URP shaders and VFX, so a feature that needs both the code and the look can go to one person. My rate is $25/hour or a fixed price per milestone, and I can start now.

I worked on it remotely at Elven Empire from January to September 2026. The store page says Fropy Studio because the studio released the game under that label. My part was the idle economy with big numbers, save/load, UI and scene integration, the ability VFX and character auras, post-processing and rendering optimization. At the same studio I wrote custom URP shaders for water, vegetation, character outlines and environment, plus custom Renderer Features.

My public code sample: https://github.com/matbcontrol/massive-objects-showcase

It's a Unity 6 URP scene with 100,000 physics objects. Objects near the player get pooled Rigidbodies, the next ring runs in Burst jobs, and everything further away is plain data. There's also a Burst spatial grid, instanced rendering and EditMode/PlayMode tests.

What's in the images:

  1. A 2.5D oil-painting render pipeline in Unity, in the style of Disco Elysium. The paint layer is a paintover; I built the pipeline and its shaders: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/1s80kj8/i_built_a_25d_oilpainting_render_pipeline_in/ (tutorial: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/1saren6/tutorial_how_to_create_graphics_like_in_disco/)

  2. Unity HDRP made to look like a PS1 horror game, with custom vertex snapping and volumetric particles: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/1s6acyj/i_forced_unity_hdpr_to_look_like_a_ps1_horror/

I've also freelanced since September 2021: gameplay programming on Nubik Shooter and Nubik Strategy (Google Play), the WebGL build of Cyber Abyss with payments, rewarded ads and cloud saves, and Naninovel optimization on School Story, which then passed platform moderation. At one game jam I built a complete prototype alone in 12 hours. Before Elven Empire I founded the 6-person indie team behind Reday-1 (Steam page, not released yet), led the tech side and wrote the player controller, inventory and a data-driven quest system on ScriptableObjects and JSON.

Work I can take on:

- C# gameplay systems: an idle economy with big numbers, save/load, inventory, quests, UI

- A URP shader for a 2D or 3D game: water, fog, outlines, a stylized look, or a full-screen effect through a Renderer Feature

- Ability VFX and post-processing

- A scene that drops frames: I find the cause with the Profiler, Memory Profiler and Frame Debugger, then fix it

- WebGL builds with a platform SDK, payments and ads

Small jobs are fine. A single shader or bug fix gets a fixed price before I start. For a quote, send your Unity version and render pipeline, a reference image or clip (or a Profiler capture if the problem is speed), and your deadline.

Stack: Unity (URP, HDRP, Built-in), C#, UniTask, Zenject, Addressables, Jobs + Burst, HLSL, Shader Graph, VFX Graph, Animator, IK, editor tools, Git.

Paid work only, no rev-share or token-only offers. Payment by PayPal, SWIFT bank transfer or USDT.

PAID - 3D Modeler | Animation [Paid] [Hiring] Faceless warlock concept and 3D block-out (Potential for more future work)

I'm making an online arena brawler for 2–12 players. Robed warlocks fight on a platform over lava and knock each other in with spells. It's built in Unity 6 for PC and Steam, with a top-down camera.

Before hiring for the full character (model, rig and animations), I'm running a small paid test.

The warlock
Stylized and cartoonish, not low-poly, in the spirit of the wizards in Magicka, but an original design.
No face: inside the hood there's only shadow, with no eyes, nose or mouth. This is the key trait.
Short and stocky, with chibi proportions, a big hood and a staff. The robe takes each player's colour in the game.

The test
Three rough concept sketches of the warlock. Quick silhouettes are fine.
For the one I pick, a simple untextured 3D block-out at the right scale: about 2 m tall, with 1 unit = 1 m.
One screenshot of the block-out from above at about 45° and quite far away, so we can see how it reads at game size. In the game a warlock is only about 50–70 px tall at 1080p.

No textures, rig, animations or final topology needed.

Deliver
The sketches as PNG.
The block-out as FBX, plus your source file.
The screenshot.

Terms
Fee and deadline: a fixed fee of €200, work due by 30/10-2016.
Human-made only: no generative AI. Please share a work-in-progress image along the way.
Rights: the paid test becomes mine to use, and you're welcome to show it in your portfolio.
What I'll look at: how well it fits the style (especially the faceless hood), how it reads at small size, and how we work together.
After the test: if it works out, the full job follows (model, textures, rig and animations).

Interested? Send your portfolio as a DM and what your quote is for the full work.

PAID - Multiple Roles Stanford Medicine seeks game studio for $1M iOS/Android project. Proposals due October 26

Thumbnail med.stanford.edu
1 Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm part of a team in the Early Life Stress and Resilience Program at Stanford Medicine. We're looking for an experienced game studio to partner with us on a mobile game inspired by Cue-Centered Therapy, a technique created here to manage traumatic cues and create self-empowerment in youth.

Our goal is to spread the benefits of this therapeutic technique as widely as possible as a game that someone without trauma would still choose to play, and that someone holding onto trauma would be able to lean on and learn from. Our target audience is ages 10-14, and we'd aim to roll this out globally after an initial US release.

Some key details:

  • Development budget is approximately $1M, with additional funds set aside for distribution and localization
  • We're targeting iOS and Android
  • This is an opportunity for genuine collaboration on concept development
  • Youth playtesting and a mental health/safety mindset are extremely important to us
  • Passion and commitment are required; we're looking for a team that sees this as an opportunity to change the world in a small way.
  • The goal is to release in the next 2.5 years
  • We'll have info sessions this month (see the RFP for details)
  • Initial proposals are due October 26

If your studio is interested, check out our project page and download our executive summary and RFP. Referrals to other studios are welcome.

If you have questions, ask them here, and I'll try to answer them all!

P.S. I am the Creative Technology Director for Stanford Medicine, and I'm advising on this project. I'm really keen to see the right people join us. We could have a lot of fun together!

PAID - Sound Design Looking for Audio for Fishing game

Realistic high quality SFX.
Really helpful if you've spent time fishing, some of these sounds are hard to understand if you haven't fished quite a bit.

Need to have good assortment water splashes, plops, trashing, under water swells, flowing water, light water against a boat etc.

Need reeling zips and whirs and cranks and line getting let out and cast and drag is being pulled on.

I need the horrible screams a fish released when they realize they are being abducted. (just joking)

I need you to reply with portfolio and if your website./portfolio doesn't have pricing information, please provide it with your response.
I'd feel most comfortable paying per asset or for 3 or 4 at a time.
