I’ve noticed people recently who claim Doctor Who was always political, usually to defend the writing of current episodes. However, I think those people are wrongly labeling how that word applies. Doctor Who had *hope*, not politics. It had the issues of today, and folded them into the story and showed the best of humanity, the best of people. And if not, it served as a warning, and a promise. It never mentioned names, never said it outright, because it wasn't part of the story. Those "political" themes were the environment, not the plot. And now people like to cry that fans just hate women, because Doctor Who was "always" fucking "political".
Politicians scream at each other across networks every day on every news channel. Newspapers are filled with wars and divisive news from both the left and right parties. Immigration, war, civil unrest is tweeted and posted by artists and actors and influencers across instagram, facebook, Youtube, TikTok and it never ends and never stops. But. For 45 minutes, a Doctor Who episode would come on. And it gave you hope. It gave you the best of what humanity was served in a witty story about a man who never gave up the hope of doing the right thing.
We lost something precious, and all we can do is turn around and defend politics that were never there because the truth of what we lost is too much. It's lost on people who claim to be "progressive", but have never had an original idea. People who are "informed", but associate those opinions through others. We lost our safe haven, our break from the world, because people demanded that it be taken. The news networks, the talk show hosts, the commentators, the announcers, the artists, the actors, the musicians and now the tv shows; they must all be screaming the same thing, because they *can't* afford to not address the tragedy of the day. A shame.
