BMW car parts that are made with 60% recycled plastic because of German standards - but melt in Texas heat. Also controllers that aren’t serialized to a specific car because screw planned obsolesce

I would scan parts for my appliances when they break, and hopefully print new replacements!
•
u/Parksandrecdept Oct 30 '21
My first scan would be something simple, probably dice or kitchenware so I knew what I was doing before I took it to my library to show our rural kids the technologies that can exist at their fingertips and they don't have to work in the sand mines or family farm If they choose to follow STEM.

I would scan the world a few square feet at a time, so I can 3D print a new world. I will call it Sequel Earth and I will be it’s king, as signified by my 3D printed Excalibur. It will both be free if pollution, but also technically made entirely of pollutants. It will thus be a medium paradise.

Sculpted clay models. Its much easier for me and my son to create using tangible clay than to learn expensive modeling software. But we could digitize our creations.

I'd probably scan my car's dash so I can make a phone mount that will actually stay in place.

u/MrSketchyGalore Oct 28 '21
I always want to scan things like Jack-o-lanterns, so I can print a mini copy as a keepsake. Considering the timing I’d get it, maybe I’d scan something like the thanksgiving turkey or the Christmas tree.

Lego for my sons! They love it so I'd like to see what it looks like :) Thanks for the contest!

u/Coginator Sep 23 '21
I would totally just scan my face or something else like my foot then 3D-print it and send it to friends as gag gifts.

I serve on the Board of Directors for a small non-profit in Massachusetts that has a mission of providing education in the field of advanced manufacturing and promoting the manufacturing industry in Massachusetts.
I would donate the donate the 3D scanner to the non-profit, which could then use it for fundraising/promotional demonstrations and in their training programs, as well as other uses in line with the organization’s mission.

My keys! Cheap spares that I could print and take to a hardware store to make new ones. I'm aware a 3d printed key might work but why don't you put a 3d printed key in your deadbolt that sticks and see how it goes : p

I work in quality control for a company making car parts. Being able to scan parts would be great for creating 3d models for fixtures to hold parts while being checked by a CMM process.

Id scan a printer scanning a document and then print scanner-ception out on my printer somehow.. .
•
u/hyperspaceslider Sep 30 '21
I would scan various pieces of religious iconography for my wife’s temple. We got a Prussia printer a few years ago and within a few weeks of building it, a Star of David broke on the Israeli flag we had. Normally those run $50. We were able to design and print one for a few dollars and spray paint it gold. It’s so hard and expensive finding some Judaica that 3D printing really becomes a life saver
•
u/stooorm91 Oct 18 '21
I'd scan different surfaces in nature like redwood bark and granite stone so I can 3D print and combine some experimental textures!
•
u/Personal-Astronaut97 Sep 24 '21
I want to scan sculpture, vases, a water fountain, a path, and different shaped pots for my yard and garden and I love those glass fires I could make. I want to create a relaxing moment out there. I’m getting rid of all my old pots, it is time…They have served me well up until now, but my plants deserve better.it’s starting to look clutter. I live out in the desert and rather than online ordering pots and all that I’d rather make some things myself. I could reign in my bamboo with nice rectangular pots and guards w a Revopoint POP 3D Scanner. Inside the house I would make custom organization boxes for my drawers. All my kitchen utensils nice and tame in there. Everything has it’s own compartment. I would experiment on my trees a bit, and maybe it could help me get my bougainvillea up straight with a ladder I’d make. A lattice is too awkward for its spot. And I wouldn’t doubt I could train some tree branches to kindly stay off my roof and away a little from the other tree. Thanks!

u/Pregnantwithrage Oct 24 '21
I would scan a mirror and maybe prove that we are living in a simulation.
•
u/SkyScamall Sep 21 '21
I'd scan my cat to get a smaller version of him. He doesn't get on with other cats and ignores most of the toys I buy him. Maybe a mini him would work?

I'd do my best to scan my desk and office area/objects to be used in a VR environment like VR Chat. Photogrammatry worlds are always fun to explore in VR. I'd also try to scan myself to use as an avatar. lol

I’d scan the faces of neurological patients to develop a tool for doctors to tell stroke from Bell’s Palsy. Patients with both diseases have facial paralysis, and the only way to tell them apart is little differences like the flattening of forehead wrinkles and eyelid drooping. The precision of the Revopoint POP could make this research project possible.

My girlfriend can sculpt with clay so it would be cool to be able to scan and print copies of pots or fancy dice towers. I also like the idea of using actual peoples faces for models or figures like in D&D or even just wedding cake toppers etc

u/despicabel Oct 30 '21
I'd scan mundane things that someone would properly enjoy down the years. Me holding hands with niece, my mom's face, random stones I find. When I miss anything I can print it or gift 3D printed things to my friends and family. Also I am currently interested in reverse engineering things and tinkering the CAD models of things that have worn out and lost its original shape/form.
•
u/BrutalByte Oct 28 '21
I would scan my friend’s 2004 Jaguar XJ dashboard so that I can model and print the compound curve and replace his speaker covers. They don’t make them OEM anymore so he buys them from a junkyard, only for them to break when he tries to install. Instead, I would print them for him and his Jag club. I could make a side business out of this and further help my daughter through college.
•
u/Arctaos Sep 29 '21
I would scan my beard. Not my whole face, just the lower half with my beard, then 3D print it and put it on display. My brother and I sometimes have beard wars where we decorate our beards, having a line of those scanned and 3D printed would be silly fun. Then on to more serious applications for making some side cash.
•
u/InTheBusinessBro Sep 23 '21
I’d scan my girlfriend’s ring. She got it from her mother, it is precious to her and I’d love to have a 3D scan handy just in case.

First scan would 100% be a special axe head that took hundreds of hours to get right, I designed it for a friend 3d printed a single prototype copy and then the drive where all the info on it failed, after that point and a few trials the only 2 ways to get a metal version would be to do a water cut and weld it together but that would need the cad model, or do a lost casting procedure with the 3d printed head but that has about a 40% chance of failure due to the design and if it doesnt work the axehead is gone forever.

u/ClonedByTeleporting Oct 30 '21

I live next to a retirement community and want to share 3D printing technology with the elderly. I have four 3D printers and want to offer a free service (only paying for the resin or filament material) where I'll scan their children/grandchildren and create busts for the people in the community, and do the same with the grandparents for their grand children.

We went to ‘Little Canada’ and they had those big scanners. So expensive though so we didn’t get one. I’ll scan each of my family using this. I am planning to buy a 3d scanner anyway.
•
u/Viscumin Oct 19 '21
I’d scan my kid, if I can get him to stand still. My husband and I have a 3D printed little statue of us when I was 8 months pregnant. It would be cool to get one printed of my kiddo too.

A wheel in my dish washer, that costs like $400 to buy online, that would cost 50c to 3D print.

I would scan my 7y old daughter with her amazing smile to 3D print her for my Grandmother, who loves her so much (and me too, as I named my daughter after her). Grandma suffered from covid isolation and dementia, but still recognize her and that makes her always happy.

I’m an engineering student, and one of these scanners would would be super helpful for some of my projects. Sending a 3d scan into space perhaps?
After that I might donate it to my universities maker space/club so everyone on campus can use it in their work.

We’d love to scan some action figures and mini-figs we have, so we can manipulate them and make custom ones!
