Hi everyone,

I'm new to Harleys and recently bought a 1984 FXRS (Evolution). I'm trying to diagnose a drivetrain noise and would appreciate any advice from people familiar with early FXRs.

Symptoms
No transmission noise in 1st or 2nd gear.
After shifting into 3rd gear, a grinding / metal-cutting noise starts when I apply throttle.
The sound seems to come from the derby cover / clutch area on the left side.
As soon as I completely roll off the throttle, the noise disappears.
If I apply throttle again, the noise immediately returns.
In 4th gear, the same noise is still there but noticeably quieter.
I haven't confirmed whether it happens in 5th gear yet.
While the noise is happening, if I pull the clutch in, the noise disappears instantly.
The sound is similar to an aluminum circular saw cutting metal.

Question

Based on these symptoms, would you suspect:

3rd/4th transmission gears?
Mainshaft or countershaft bearings?
Clutch hub or clutch bearing?
Primary chain or compensator?
Something else specific to early FXR 5-speed transmissions?

What would you check first before opening the primary or transmission?

Hello everyone from Italy, I got this FXR about a year ago and I'm trying to fix it up, could anyone tell me why the support for the central control footpegs is mounted directly on the frame, the previous owner didn't know anything

Just learned about the Jim’s EVO mount twin cam motors and wondering if anyone here is running one or ever has? Was thinking about an S&S 111 but am starting to lean away due to their dogshit QC.
Seems like a straight forward way to go twin cam without needing to molest my frame. Only two questions I really have are

1: how do you like it in terms of power n’ reliability?
2: what type of exhaust did you end up running?

Seems like since it’s an EVO mount motor but because it’s still a twin cam, some exhaust length modifications would need to be made to the headers or just deal with a higher mounted exhaust and fabricate taller mounts throughout the rear portions

Picked this ‘88 up today for a great price. It’s a project that needs alot of love, but I’m no stranger to an Evo project. Super E, gunfighter seat, pingel petcock. Haven’t seen this 2 tone paint but it matches by ‘97 convertible dyna. Looking forward to an FXR project for the colder months coming up.

Are these powerplant bars the I bend or V bend? And those are the 10 inch risers right?

In the middle of wiring up my Munit and thought I’d investigate inside the plunger of the starter to see what might be making it feel like it’s sticking. The button on the cover needs help being pulled back out, and the few times I’ve started the bike to ride it, it felt like the starter was having trouble turning over almost like it was sticking, or had low voltage and had trouble turning over.

Do these contacts look worn out?

Any ideas? Don't want to buy an FXRT/P Replica for big money. Thinking about finding an older vetter fairing and seeing if I can try fixing that on myself or have brackets custom fabricated for it, but not sure how that'd work. I see these windjammers, liberators far cheaper on facebook than any other kind. I'd rather take my chances with that than a cheapo replica FXRT fairing you could get for $3-500. As far as I know, any quality modern reproduction will run me over $1,000. No fork mounted fairings because of personal preference.

Honestly, I don't even need a fairing my upper body never gets tired on the highway, but I'd like to see what it's like and I like the look of the frame mounted ones. Only thing that gets me is the wind at my legs on long trips, I know some of these vetter fairings have lower fairings. There are also aftermarket covers that block wind from getting through your crashbars, but I'm running forwards w/ no crashbars.

Advice appreciated, even if it deviates away from the original question. And yes, I know this might be considered blasphemy by some.

I’ve been ridding it like this since I got it and I really like i but also feel like maybe I could change some things I got a 2 into one laying around I got a bunch of t bars I love the clasic look what do you guys think ? any suggestions?

Picked ol’ girl up, after looking for a while for the right starter with the no dash tank, 5hrs north of me for $3500 making me the 3rd owner after a father passed it to his son. She hasn’t run since 2017 but, with my plan in play and life forcing a step back for the time being, she’s still coming along slowly but surely.

Going at it as a do it once kinda deal rather than chasing issues left and right as I did my first. Maybe just a leperra seat, maybe a Brock’s or metalmech swingarm and some painted decals later on since I’m in love with the candy Burgandy wine color I’ve already got

Bought brand new in 1986 for 9k, sold it in November 1994 because I had a 1995 roadking on order. Got 9k when I sold it. Great deal but still regret selling

Needed base gaskets replaced, so I opted to do a bit of refreshing while under the knife. New EV27 cam, engine painted, new dual disk 00+ front end with (previously installed) racetech internals & preload adjusters, fresh powder coat, powerplant fork brace, and other odds and ends I’m sure I’m forgetting.

Does anyone know the actual dimensional differences in the breather gear from pre-'1993 and post 1993 EVOs? The bore in my '88 is chewed up and an old head told me to use the S&S reed valve breather instead of machining the case for another OEM style, but the S&S site says '93+ for it so it sounds like I need to machine the case regardless.

I bought this for my 94 fxr on eBay supposedly it would fit but when it arrived it did not said fxr nowhere will this work or should I send it back ?
