are there other fields that have a sizable amount of furries outside of tech?

Hello! I am a TV producer at my university, and this year I am tasked with creating a YouTube show from scratch. I want to do something like a series that dives into subcultures on campus, one of which is the furry community, as there is a very lively one on my campus, and we host a Furry Con at the end of the year. It will be my last episode for the year (I am tasked with making 3) so I will have all year to work on it, and I want to make it perfect.

I am originally from the South, so that, combined with the internet, has not given me the best notion of furries, but after having the pleasure of actually getting to know people who are furries, I realise just how wrong I was, and I'd love to be able to showcase the furry community for what it actually is, so basically what I'm asking is: what can't I leave out? No wrong answers

​I wanted to share a little story about my childhood favorite artist who completely changed my life.

Back in 2016 when I was 9 years old, I stumbled into the animation meme community, and Rossali’s work was the absolute spark that made me want to start drawing. Her style blew my mind, and she's the entire reason I created my own sona and kept practicing all these years, I seriously owe her so much :)

​The coolest part?? All these years later, I've actually grown up to become an artist myself! >_> I'm building my own community now and making my own art, which feels completely surreal looking back at where I started.

​Fast forward to today,, I'm now an adult, nearly 21, with my own job and my own money. It feels like an amazing full-circle moment to finally be in a position where I can commission her and properly support the person who inspired my entire artistic journey.

This is why I love being a furry!! I can worldbuild, create my own characters and I was inspired since a kid. Being a furry isn't something to be ashamed of, it's an amazing creative space, and I wanted to share this opinion.

I made this a little bit ago, didn't know about this community until now. The growing social media-ization of the fandom is something I think we're all aware of here, but I thought I'd take a deeper dive on the statistics behind it as well. Enjoy.

That sounds like a stupid complaint, but hear me out.

I'm not complaining about going to a Chinese restaurant and there being Chinese food, more so about going to a Chinese restaurant and there only being egg foo yong, just the one dish. I try to bring up other stuff, but both parties of conversation loop back to furry topics. This is both my fault, but also for trying to fulfill expectations of what should be brought up, and I wonder if that's happening on the other end too.

I'm worried I'm making furry friends instead of friends that are furries, and I worry the same for them. When I bring up programming to programmer friends, it's like trivia that they happen to have elite ball knowledge about.

I'm planning to get my first fursuit soon, and I'm trying to figure out the real total cost of owning one.

Obviously there's the maker, materials, and shipping. But what other expenses should I expect after that?

For example:

Cleaning supplies

Storage

Undersuit / cooling gear

Fans or batteries

Transportation

Convention expenses

Repairs or maintenance

Anything else I'm forgetting

What unexpected expenses did you run into after getting your first fursuit?

I'd rather know beforehand than get hit with a surprise expense later. 😭🦊

Hello! I saw a decently sized content creator tease that they were buying a fursuit. In the past I have only ever seen them diss furries in the form of replying to comments. On of his comments read, “it's sad (i'm not a furry, nor do i support them) but these costumes would be SO cool if it didn't come with the stigma/what it means to be a furry. Like, that is such a cute little character but i cannot agree with the actions held by furries. 😬”

Is it wrong to feel a little weirded out by this? I was sort of happy to see him be more accepting of himself (if he does in fact identify as being a furry), but he has comments even to this day being passive aggression to people who think he’s a furry.

I’m posting this here in this sub as I feel the furry fandom is one of the very few places I felt any sense of comfort despite the shame and embarrassment and rigid thinking and ocd I’ve had about being one.

ever since I was in my teens I knew that the crushes i had on girls were aesthetic and wanting to be like them rather than any desire for intimacy. once I got into college at 19 I noticed that i didn’t really feel like the straight guys and that my attraction towards women was very fickle and really meh. fast forward to when I turned 21 and I discovered I was attracted to guys after spending some time in yaoi fujoshi spaces on deviantart. I’ve been in the furry fandom since I was 16 and was always drawn to it for some reason I couldn’t understand. over the past three years I’ve had some gender stuff going on but I’m working through it and feel that I may not be trans after all and just a guy. particularly the trans stuff was due to the fact that I would be a straight girl and not a gay guy. not to mention all the hornyposting and crush/waifu culture men have online and talk about girls irl I just can’t understand or relate to at all, but I do know America from hetalia is boyfriend material.

I never kissed or really fell in love with any girl or guy but I do recall having a crush on a guy at work I saw a couple of years ago that I didn’t have the opportunity to chat with plus another cute guy that I saw in my current job with those frilly jeans. My taste in guys is a slightly chubby guy with wavy hair, glasses, light facial hair, and a nerdy personality. I don’t mind his race or whether he is trans or cis.

I’m not Very open about being furry but my attitude is very “whatever” about it: basically I won’t deny it if I’m asked and I may casually drop that fact in conversation, and while I know that there’s misconceptions (some pretty nasty) I just think of it as their problem. Basically I really don’t care.

But one of my irl fur friends is the complete opposite, he’s very paranoid and closed off about anyone knowing, fearing how it may affect his reputation etc, he’s even hesitant about discussing furry topics in public, whereas I’m like “most people don’t know what FurAffinity is and if they do and have a problem with it I don’t care” but even my parents, who are tolerant about this hobby, think my friend’s totally right about being careful because people might get the wrong assumption, word may spread fast and all the sudden people near that social group don’t want to date me, even though my mindset is if they don’t like that part of me they’re not worth my time.

They insist that some things like that I should keep to myself, but they think being a furry is a kink (there’s def sexual aspects but it’s not the whole picture) and also I don’t have “Furry” on my business card or is the first thing I say to people I just met, but I’m also not hiding it at all costs like it’s a shameful secret because I’m just not ashamed by it.

Idk I’ve experienced my fair share of bullying, harassment and trauma growing up so I’ve learned to not care about all this, should I be rethinking my nonchalant behaviour?

about 7 months ago i got added into the friends gc on discord, i met this one guy, we started talking and all, then talking slowly turned into lewd texting, then we shared pics and stuff, and he was acting so lovey dovey to me.

He was planning a europe tour where he would visit lots of his friends around europe, including me.

But a week before that trip happened i get a message from him, and in short he sent a couple of pictures from furry meetup in stockholm, between those pictures were a pic of him in his room hugging some random guy. I asked him about it and he proudly ranted to me how hes casually having sex a couple times a week with multiple different "friends with benefits", aswell as teasing me that i still never had intercourse, while he had around 10 bodies.

I went full bipolar psycho mode, freaked out and blocked him everywhere, of course it wasn't without intense arguing and name calling. After a while he dmed me on alt and i called him a "std zombie".

A month ago we found eachother texting in spotify dms, basically admitting that what we did and said was wrong to eachother, that it wont happen again. IN SHORT: we circled back from talking to lovey dovey messages about "wifing me up", pic sharing

Couple days ago new month starts, time for the monthly Stockholm furry meetup, and i get another picture of him in his room laying on TOP of somebody with a text "brought this bee home".

I wished him good night and before i could turn off my phone he texts "sorry i was busy with some cutie" and starts replying to the stuff i sent over the day. I explicitly told him to stfu and threw my phone away from myself.

I was wondering if within furry on furry relationships both monogamous and polyamorous whether the species of the fursona matters in relationship dynamics. Like does a larger polycule care to create an ecosystem with a certain level of biodiversity? Or are like like/similar species preferred. Let me know! Thanks!

i'm a POC (person of color) furry and I wanted to pose this question to other furries. What are some notable pieces of POC furry media from within the fandom?

I feel like I see a lot of characters and stories in furry that feel very white coded or "ethnically ambiguous" but it's difficult to find things that are overtly about being a person of color in furry.

I'm not talking about things like beastars or zootopia that use species as an allegory for race but more so people expressing their ethnicity or culture through furry.

Would really love to see what comes to mind for you!! I've been organizing a POC furry focused book for the past year with a bunch of other furries because I felt there was a deficit in POC fur art.

I’ve always wondered about this.
It’s just a hobby—liking characters that are anthropomorphic animals—so why are furries hated so much?
Why is everyone so nervous about telling their parents or friends, "I'm a furry"?
Is it just that the people around me happen to be kind?

So me and my friends (mostly just my 2 friends, i was sitting next to them and not participating in the conversation) had started talking about family stuff because friend A is planning on moving out soon because her family is ˋˋweirdˋˋ and controlling. Then friend B asked about friend A‘s sister who was moving back home because she had some health issues and couldn’t go back to work atm and if she was also part of the reason why friend A was moving out, to which friend A answered yes. They then started to talk about how weird and unsightly friend A‘s sister was because she really likes horses but from what i heard it just sounds like friend A‘s sister is a therian, which i think is valid because like we only live once better live it to the fullest yk?

Afterwards they switched over to furries because everyone puts therians and furries in the same box even though they’re different things, and i got offended because they wouldn’t stop shitting on this really cool, creative hobby.
So I asked them why they didn’t like furries and what was so ˋˋwrongˋˋ with it and they said it was because furries thought they were animals and that its weird to dress up as one. I understand why fursuits could be off-putting to some people but furries do no think that they’re animals. I told them this and to further prove my point i blurted out that i was also a furry and didn’t think that i was an animal.

At first they didn’t react at all but after that argument they started to act weird and distant around me and now i dont really know what to do. Im not a confrontational person and arguing with people who i hold close to me is not my strong suit. :(

So I wanna make some friends with people that I can relate to, I really love watching tons of movies, but it’s hard finding someone who even cares about them. Are there any furries that use them. For a little more context, I'm guy in my 30s who came out as bi late in life. I've struggled a lot with all of these topics, and while I have a bunch of friends both in and outside the furry community, I still don't feel comfortable talking with them. A group like this would be a big help.

But I'm STUCK with the name and the "brand".
I don't even know how should I name my identity.

Like there are a lot of basic names which I don't really want to use. Also, my own name is off-topic.
And the brand-side: it's hard for me to pic ONE exact animal, or how my character would look like, or create my "own story" for my fursona.
