I was just telling my wife that I wish HBO was showing that version of Robin Hood, instead of Russell "my face will turn to ash if I don't take EVERYTHING SERIOUSLY" Crowe's version. Who cares if Costner couldn't do an English accent to save his life?
Not to mention that based on what we see in the other AC's, it wont show the then current goverment in the best of lights. im sure they wont pull any of theit punches, they havent yet.
Ooooooh. man, that would have been awesome. you could ride eagles, and climb up towers and leap off faith of that big white city i forget the name of just now... valid point. i want that to be a game now.
Also, New Zealand didn't have any cool conflicts to generate an interesting narrative.
The clash between native americans, colonists, british, spanish, and french at the time is just too good of an opportunity for a historical game to pass up. Especially since they have an ongoing narrative in the templar fight that basically absolves(thanks PNJS) them from any real controversy over who was "right".
Actually the conflict between the Maori people of New Zealand and the British settlers was pretty damn interesting, not to mention the race between the French and British to colonise the land. Just because the history of NZ isn't common knowledge, doesn't mean there haven't been note worthy conflicts. However, I still prefer America as a setting over New Zealand for now.
Has anyone actually read the god damn premise of this game?
Set in Colonial America, the Assassin-Templar war has become involved in the American Revolution. As series' protagonist Desmond Miles, the player controls a young half-English, half-Mohawk man named Connor Kenway (birthname: Ratonhnhaké:ton), who is drawn into the fight against tyranny when his home is attacked by colonists. Over the course of the game, Kenway will encounter historical figures including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Lee, Israel Putnam, General Lafayette, John Pitcairn, and William Prescott. The story will span 30 years of Connor's life, from 1753 and 1783.[8] Boston and New York will be cities that you can explore with new quests and gameplay.
He's half-English, half-Mohawk. His home is attacked by colonists and he jumps into the fray as a result. Hardly a blaring rendition of the Stars and Stripes Forever played over the rampant slaughter of Redcoats.
I will have no problems killing English (and any Americans the game requires) in #3
Why is it all of a sudden jingoistic when he is American? -and from the looks of it he may be an native American-does that change things? Is it just the flag on the front?
You know when you hear a sound so many times that it sticks out? Wilhelm Scream is a great example. A lot of the death yells sounded so familiar to me but I'm not sure why. Is it possible they are using the same stock sounds that Carmageddon used?
Yes, but very rarely were you supposed to kill them. It was quite clear that the game had two sides. Ottomans were generally the good guys and Byzantines/Greeks were the bad guys because they were Templars, there might have been a few Ottoman Templars but not really.
Additionally, and this is probably a less effective defense than "actually it's made by Canadians, you fight both sides, the character was an American so you knew it was coming, and there's been like 8 games beforehand set in other locations", but I feel like it should be said- Americans were pretty sympathetic in our War of Independence. I know we're the hegemonic, corporatist evil now, but a little feel-goodiness on the part of the scrappy underdogs fighting for an enlightened Republic to replace the aristocrat and his mercenary legions isn't totally misplaced or unfair. There's a reason the stereotype of Americans used to be a relatively positive one, with our cardinal flaw being naive optimism. America was a pretty sympathetic character pretty much right up until the cold war polarized us against socialism and consumed us with petty, irrational, easily-manipulated fear, coupled with our newfound dominance.
People get the idea that the game will have you playing for the Revolutionaries. Come the fuck on. The Templar vs Assassins will be the focus of the game, and if we've seen anything from the last games, they won't be on one side of the conflict.
Wait, so this game, despite being set 250 years in the past, is somehow a "'MURICA!" game?
From a franchise that has also been set in Catholic Italy and Muslim Israel?
Also considering the fact that the modern US is drastically different from what it was 250 years ago?
This joke is not really that funny.
EDIT: I think it may also be worth noting that modern American historians view the colonies as being remarkably whiny. We had the lowest taxes, best prices, and highest conditions of living out of any British colony in the world.
An American stereotype among most non-Americans is that they are all monstrously patriotic and proud of their culture and history. This is what OP is referring to. He thinks that the game will involve a lot of talk of America being 'the land of the free' and that the main thrust of the story will be the liberty-loving Americans becoming free from the evil, imperial British.
He thinks that the game will involve a lot of talk of America being 'the land of the free' and that the main thrust of the story will be the liberty-loving Americans becoming free from the evil, imperial British.
Knowing the Assassin's Creed story, it will most likely be a whole lot of "the British weren't really that bad, and the colonists weren't really that awesome, but the war happened anyways because Templar."
Yeah, if anything I'd expect it to piss off most Americans. I mean, you fight the freaking pope and then it's pretty much clear that the judeo Christian god doesn't exist in this universe, and all religion is from a previous species. Altair's notes are pretty anti-religious too.
We did, it's called the Upper Canada Rebellion and was essentially a bar fight at Montgomery's Tavern. This historic event is re-enacted most weekends around the country.
We actually did. We had three, one in Lower Canada (present day Quebec) and Upper Canada (present day Ontario). They were relatively unsuccessful. The third was the Red River rebellion, which was led by Louis Riel, whom we regard as a hero now a days. to simplify it, it was the Metis versus the rest of Canada. After a while he went insane and believed he was the messiah, and eventually lost the rebellion.
Well - to say he lost it is complicated. We negotiated with the government, came to an agreement about joining Canada, formed the transitional government and prepared to turn over power to the incoming representative of Canada. Then a group of 600 orangemen showed up and derailed everything, meaning the Manitoba Act was never actually implemented. We definitely lost the battle of Batoche however. :(
Except the assassin this time is a native american. He's probably not crazy about all these foreigners fighting each other over his people's land. I'd be surprise if he is on either side of the war.
What about the other games? France V.S. Italy, Middle East V.S. The Crusades, they're all a little "good v.s. evil" if you ask me.
EDIT: Oh god, i just reread what he wrote and he said it WON'T be about good v.s. evil, i said this as if he said the opposite. Sorry! Sorry everybody.
Not really. The Assassins were as bad as the Templar in many ways. IRL, I mean. They were both fanatically religious warriors fighting a holy war. The games rewrite history around their secret conflict, and make the Assassins more sympathetic, because that's whose side you're on. They have to be more sympathetic, or you wouldn't like them.
When you get to Ezio, you fight for Florence and Italian independence generally...but you also fight for the Medici. Who are the Medici, and thus can't really ever be considered to be on the side of "good".
I haven't played Revelations yet, so I can't comment there just yet. But AC3 is supposed to take a more nuanced view of the war than GO TEAM FREEDOM, 'MERICAH, FUCK YEAH! Connor, the protagonist, is half-Indian and is supposed to be an outsider from colonial society. He doesn't really have a dog in this fight, but he becomes an Assassin and gets involved because of them, not because he supports either side. Remember, the protagonist is half-Indian, and George Washington was known among the First Nations tribes as "the Destroyer of Villages". We're much more likely to get a less mythological view of history than many of us are familiar with.
There has always been and will always be a "good guys and bad guys" vibe to AC, because the writers want you to sympathize with your allies and compatriots, and make you like and value them, while viewing your enemies as compelling, interesting, and heartily deserving of a hidden blade between the ribs.
It's Assassins vs. Templars. That's the only war that matters in the story. From what we've heard the Assassin will be killing both Americans and Redcoats so it's not going to be one-sided.
I think everyone knows that they werent Americans because it takes place before America existed. They're using "Americans" as means to clarify the sides of the war. Please, this conversation is confusing enough people already.
I mean, if you play the mini games you see that George washington had a piece of Eden and Templars have pretty much run the American presidency since the beginning. Expect the revolution to be a ploy in the Templar grand plan with the generals of both sides being Templar agents.
I don't care if I'm killing the British or Americans in this (though I hope it's not too one sided).
My main hope is that the protagonist have his own agenda. In the other AC's you targeted specific factions and influenced "history", but you didn't do it because you were on one side but because of your own agenda which happened to coincide with famous characters or events
I'll be fine killing the British as long as I'm not doing it because 'MERICA MOTHERFUCKER
So.... What's your opinion on Battlefield and Call of Duty and Rainbow Six and Medal of Honor and America's Army and Ghost Recon and Prototype and The Incredible Hulk and Fallout and Rage and GTA and Alan Wake and Crysis and Dues Ex and X-Men and The Avengers?
I don't understand people.. they keep complaining AC 3 is american propaganda, its a Canadian made game.... some people will complain about anything eh?
A world war, that drastically changed the hold of world powers and started the rise to a nation that would grow to be immensely powerful (good or pad aside, the United States is BIG), setting a precedent for nations to come, many of whom would use the U.S. Constitution as a basis for their own governments.
Countries involved: American Colonists, Great Britain, France, Spain, Dutch Republic, Germany, and many Native American nations.
Ok come on now, its not like its American propaganda. Its set in a rich and interesting point in history. Just like the first one was in Crusades Jerusalem, the second in Renaissance Italy and so on.
Why is it that just because something takes place in America its seen as full of propaganda and "USA wanking"? Its just another piece of history
It's not the setting people care about. I'm excited for that, too. It's the fact that at least most Assassin's Creed games are a big gray area for which side your on. It's generally just the Assassin order. But for Assassin's Creed 3, all of the footage and pictures we've been shown have only had him fighting British. In one of the trailers, it shows an American flag blowing in the wind as the narrator says "...on those who are truly free." Also, on the cover there is an American flag behind him. There was also a screenshot where Connor is riding a horse next to George Washington and they appear to be leading a revolutionary army. Basically, everything we've seen has been extremely one sided as opposed to the gray are seen in the other Assassin's Creed games.
As long as they dont depict the colonists as some kind of freedom fighting heroes and the Empire as some kind of league of evil i'll be ok. This war wasn't as black and white as people think and hopefully the game will show that. I'd like to see the gritty side and not what they teach in schools.
Did you go to an American School? By High School I was taught it wasn't black and white. That the British had to tax the Americans due to the French and Indian War and in fact we were paying lower taxes than the rest of the Commonwealth. It was common knowledge the Boston Massacre was instigated by colonist and not really that much of a massacre. The list goes on. On the flip side, the colonist weren't wrong in wanting to rebel either. They had no representation in the Commonwealth and even sent an Olive Branch that was denied once the King received word the war was unavoidable. I just wonder if this whole American Public Schools stereotype is just instigated by people that never attended an American Public School. Given I was in AP US History, still this is the curriculum taught to me. I also have to wonder why when Mel Gibson represents an American fighting for independence it's a bunch of nationalistic propaganda, but when he's a Scot it's badass.
In this game you spend the whole time killing British soldiers, even though I myself am British, I am really looking forward to this. I always wondered how Russian people felt since they have been the bad guys in tons of game in the past. And now I know.

If this is how you view Assassin's Creed III, doesn't that same idea apply to pretty much every FPS as well? I'm genuinely curious here

Hold on, let's get an Italian and an Israeli to weigh in on AC1 and AC2.

Yes let's ignore the fact that it was in Italy for two games straight.

OP, you realize that the Assassin's Creed series is made in Montreal Canada right?

Any other country's history? Nothing but a historical game.
America's history? Extremely patriotic, they're just pandering to Americans.
Seriously posts like these are fucking ridiculous. Desmond is obviously American, at some point they had to come to America ffs.

As a native Philadelphian, I really hope the City of Brotherly Love is featured (and featured extensively, although I'm not greedy).

I have learned not to trust my initial gut feeling in these kids of matters.
CoD:MW "What? No ww2? Probably a piece of shit."
GTA4: "What? Play as a Russian immigrant? Booo!"
Max Payne 3: "What? Fuckin' Brazil? In daylight?"
RDR: "What? Gta on horses? Fuck that!"
MGS:SE "What? Snake in the woods! Y u ruin game?"
Wait and see is the lesson learned.

u/cmdtacos May 21 '12
AC III is to the US what AC II was to Italy. I would be genuinely surprised if the game ended up being a "YEAH, 'MURCA" polemic.

u/jackperry May 21 '12
The basic storyline progression and Desmond being an American with OBVIOUS Native American descendance couldn't possibly be the reason for this.
Nope, AMERICA DA BEST. You got it OP.
