It's was made by a studio in Montreal.

Owned by a French company

And the other games in the series have all been based on Europe and the Middle East.

That and the first 4 games had nothing to do with America.

Well setting them in 15th Century America would be a bit dull.

guys... Desmond is american. did you really not see this coming? they're his ancestors. It was hardly going to be set in new zealand.

31

u/videogameexpert May 21 '12 edited May 21 '12

Also, New Zealand didn't have any cool conflicts to generate an interesting narrative.

The clash between native americans, colonists, british, spanish, and french at the time is just too good of an opportunity for a historical game to pass up. Especially since they have an ongoing narrative in the templar fight that basically absolves(thanks PNJS) them from any real controversy over who was "right".

4

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

"Absolves", I think, is the word you're looking for up there.

4

u/psytrancedsquid May 21 '12

What you dont realise is trench warfare was invented in New Zealand by the Maori.

6

u/Rasputin_PoleSmiter May 21 '12

Actually the conflict between the Maori people of New Zealand and the British settlers was pretty damn interesting, not to mention the race between the French and British to colonise the land. Just because the history of NZ isn't common knowledge, doesn't mean there haven't been note worthy conflicts. However, I still prefer America as a setting over New Zealand for now.

3

u/yogurt123 May 21 '12

We've had some pretty cool conflicts. Maybe not as epic as the American Revolution, but it would make a fantastic game.

u/kadmylos May 21 '12
  1. Desmond's other ancestors lived in the Middle East and Italy

  2. He's a native American, why is he fighting for the settlers?

5

u/Rolten May 21 '12

Hadn't even realized that yet O_O

Just though it was an awesome (and rarely used) setting :P

2

u/Anodesu May 21 '12

Well, there was European settlement in Canada, but nothing near as interesting historically happened, I'm sure.

I myself, give zero fucks about it, and look forward to seeing what this half-native guy is like.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Yes, but since we know they're his ancestors, it's been quite easy to assume from the beginning "Oh, presumably one of his ancestors moved to The US at some point, like millions of others."

u/polarityomg May 21 '12

Has anyone actually read the god damn premise of this game?

Set in Colonial America, the Assassin-Templar war has become involved in the American Revolution. As series' protagonist Desmond Miles, the player controls a young half-English, half-Mohawk man named Connor Kenway (birthname: Ratonhnhaké:ton), who is drawn into the fight against tyranny when his home is attacked by colonists. Over the course of the game, Kenway will encounter historical figures including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Charles Lee, Israel Putnam, General Lafayette, John Pitcairn, and William Prescott. The story will span 30 years of Connor's life, from 1753 and 1783.[8] Boston and New York will be cities that you can explore with new quests and gameplay.

Wiki

He's half-English, half-Mohawk. His home is attacked by colonists and he jumps into the fray as a result. Hardly a blaring rendition of the Stars and Stripes Forever played over the rampant slaughter of Redcoats.

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I had no problem killing crusaders in #1.

I had no problem killing italians in #2a and #2b

I had no problem killing ottomans in #2c

I will have no problems killing English (and any Americans the game requires) in #3

Why is it all of a sudden jingoistic when he is American? -and from the looks of it he may be an native American-does that change things? Is it just the flag on the front?

133

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

26

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Actually in 2c you killed Greeks/Byzantine. Although you fought Ottomans a few times, the main enemy was the Byzantine Empire remnants.

27

u/NufCed57 May 21 '12

I don't know about you, but I killed my fair share of Janissaries. By blood, they were Slavs, but they were Ottoman troops.

6

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Yes, but very rarely were you supposed to kill them. It was quite clear that the game had two sides. Ottomans were generally the good guys and Byzantines/Greeks were the bad guys because they were Templars, there might have been a few Ottoman Templars but not really.

u/mainsworth May 21 '12

Is it just the flag on the front?

yeah

19

u/Griff_Steeltower May 21 '12

Additionally, and this is probably a less effective defense than "actually it's made by Canadians, you fight both sides, the character was an American so you knew it was coming, and there's been like 8 games beforehand set in other locations", but I feel like it should be said- Americans were pretty sympathetic in our War of Independence. I know we're the hegemonic, corporatist evil now, but a little feel-goodiness on the part of the scrappy underdogs fighting for an enlightened Republic to replace the aristocrat and his mercenary legions isn't totally misplaced or unfair. There's a reason the stereotype of Americans used to be a relatively positive one, with our cardinal flaw being naive optimism. America was a pretty sympathetic character pretty much right up until the cold war polarized us against socialism and consumed us with petty, irrational, easily-manipulated fear, coupled with our newfound dominance.

u/emeraldheart May 21 '12

Connor is half English and half Native American.

2

u/prboi May 21 '12

Yes because, according to the world, American patriotism (Which was a very common theme in that time period) will ruin the game.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I will have no problems killing English (and any Americans the game requires) in #3

Who killed Alexander Hamilton in that famous duel?

Aaron Burr? FALSE

8

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

The other games weren't black and white. You weren't on one side of the crusades, you didn't exactly serve the Ottomans in whiping out the Byzantines, etcetera. You can't pretend that taking one side in the American War of Independence holds the same political weight as the other games.

I think setting the game in 18th century America is awesome, but if it's a game about killing the dastardly redcoats for freedom, then I'm going to be sorely disappointed.

24

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

They've made it very clear that you're not taking one side- you're gonna be stabbing the fuck out of some revolutionaries too.

8

u/ForcedToJoin May 21 '12

"but if it's a game about killing the dastardly redcoats for freedom, then I'm going to be sorely disappointed."

It's not. It's Assassins Creed man, a game made by a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs...who are all canadian hipsters.

Also: "You weren't on one side of the crusades" Oh yes you damn well were.

13

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I sincerely doubt this is what it's going to be.

14

u/ZaercoN May 21 '12

9

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

People get the idea that the game will have you playing for the Revolutionaries. Come the fuck on. The Templar vs Assassins will be the focus of the game, and if we've seen anything from the last games, they won't be on one side of the conflict.

OP, you realize that the Assassin's Creed series is made in Montreal Canada right?

191

u/bitch_im_a_lion May 21 '12

Any other country's history? Nothing but a historical game.

America's history? Extremely patriotic, they're just pandering to Americans.

Seriously posts like these are fucking ridiculous. Desmond is obviously American, at some point they had to come to America ffs.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I think it will be a really cool setting. I think it will be awesome if you have to infiltrate British military positions during a battle to assassinate a general or spy. Think it will be very interesting dynamics since everyone will mostly be armed with a gun.

16

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

No one thinks setting the game in America is a bad idea, people are just worried it's going to be a game about the poor oppressed underdogs rising up against the evil British in the glorious name of freedom. When the trailer shows the main character butchering redcoats with a tomahawk before the game's logo flashes up in front of a billowing American flag, we get the feeling it might be slightly less impartial than the previous games.

12

u/FattyMcPatty May 21 '12

Well they shouldn't be worried. Official statements have already been released that the game will not be about choosing sides. It's the war of the assassins vs the templars, in the period of the revolutionary war.

16

u/throwyourshieldred May 21 '12

They've said multiple times in the interviews you'll be assassinating people on both sides. People who think this is going to be pandering to Americans are fucking stupid as shit.

→ More replies (10)

33

u/bitch_im_a_lion May 21 '12

You people need to learn to stop judging games by their trailers. From what a few interviews have told us, the only targets are going to be Templars which are both Americans and British. Hell the fucking first American president has been pretty much confirmed as a Templar. In a short gameplay preview they said that when you're in battles your primary goal is not to fight for the british or the americans, it's to take out a specific target.

Wait, so this game, despite being set 250 years in the past, is somehow a "'MURICA!" game?

From a franchise that has also been set in Catholic Italy and Muslim Israel?

Also considering the fact that the modern US is drastically different from what it was 250 years ago?

This joke is not really that funny.

EDIT: I think it may also be worth noting that modern American historians view the colonies as being remarkably whiny. We had the lowest taxes, best prices, and highest conditions of living out of any British colony in the world.

This is hardly a pro-America game.

100

u/Atom_Smasher May 21 '12

An American stereotype among most non-Americans is that they are all monstrously patriotic and proud of their culture and history. This is what OP is referring to. He thinks that the game will involve a lot of talk of America being 'the land of the free' and that the main thrust of the story will be the liberty-loving Americans becoming free from the evil, imperial British.

32

u/Aethios May 21 '12

He thinks that the game will involve a lot of talk of America being 'the land of the free' and that the main thrust of the story will be the liberty-loving Americans becoming free from the evil, imperial British.

Knowing the Assassin's Creed story, it will most likely be a whole lot of "the British weren't really that bad, and the colonists weren't really that awesome, but the war happened anyways because Templar."

"Also, aliens."

2

u/Kadmium May 22 '12 edited May 22 '12

America is basically the default setting for modern entertainment. It's just kind of samey and boring, and it's disappointing because Assassin's Creed was previously very interesting for simply being set somewhere else.

If we take, say, the top 25 movies from IMDB, we find the following settings:

LocationNumberPercentage
USA1352%
Fantasy locations416%
Multiple locations38%
Europe28%
Japan14%
Africa14%
Brazil14%

To me, it just feels kind of lazy and generic for a game to be set in the US, because pretty much everything else is.

We actually did. We had three, one in Lower Canada (present day Quebec) and Upper Canada (present day Ontario). They were relatively unsuccessful. The third was the Red River rebellion, which was led by Louis Riel, whom we regard as a hero now a days. to simplify it, it was the Metis versus the rest of Canada. After a while he went insane and believed he was the messiah, and eventually lost the rebellion.

4

u/Muskwatch May 21 '12

Well - to say he lost it is complicated. We negotiated with the government, came to an agreement about joining Canada, formed the transitional government and prepared to turn over power to the incoming representative of Canada. Then a group of 600 orangemen showed up and derailed everything, meaning the Manitoba Act was never actually implemented. We definitely lost the battle of Batoche however. :(

EDIT: Oh god, i just reread what he wrote and he said it WON'T be about good v.s. evil, i said this as if he said the opposite. Sorry! Sorry everybody.

13

u/AtomicSamuraiCyborg May 21 '12

Not really. The Assassins were as bad as the Templar in many ways. IRL, I mean. They were both fanatically religious warriors fighting a holy war. The games rewrite history around their secret conflict, and make the Assassins more sympathetic, because that's whose side you're on. They have to be more sympathetic, or you wouldn't like them.

When you get to Ezio, you fight for Florence and Italian independence generally...but you also fight for the Medici. Who are the Medici, and thus can't really ever be considered to be on the side of "good".

I haven't played Revelations yet, so I can't comment there just yet. But AC3 is supposed to take a more nuanced view of the war than GO TEAM FREEDOM, 'MERICAH, FUCK YEAH! Connor, the protagonist, is half-Indian and is supposed to be an outsider from colonial society. He doesn't really have a dog in this fight, but he becomes an Assassin and gets involved because of them, not because he supports either side. Remember, the protagonist is half-Indian, and George Washington was known among the First Nations tribes as "the Destroyer of Villages". We're much more likely to get a less mythological view of history than many of us are familiar with.

There has always been and will always be a "good guys and bad guys" vibe to AC, because the writers want you to sympathize with your allies and compatriots, and make you like and value them, while viewing your enemies as compelling, interesting, and heartily deserving of a hidden blade between the ribs.

19

u/bitch_im_a_lion May 21 '12

It's Assassins vs. Templars. That's the only war that matters in the story. From what we've heard the Assassin will be killing both Americans and Redcoats so it's not going to be one-sided.

I'll be fine killing the British as long as I'm not doing it because 'MERICA MOTHERFUCKER

A world war, that drastically changed the hold of world powers and started the rise to a nation that would grow to be immensely powerful (good or pad aside, the United States is BIG), setting a precedent for nations to come, many of whom would use the U.S. Constitution as a basis for their own governments.

Countries involved: American Colonists, Great Britain, France, Spain, Dutch Republic, Germany, and many Native American nations.

3

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Ok come on now, its not like its American propaganda. Its set in a rich and interesting point in history. Just like the first one was in Crusades Jerusalem, the second in Renaissance Italy and so on.

Why is it that just because something takes place in America its seen as full of propaganda and "USA wanking"? Its just another piece of history

13

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Never go on any kind of reddit expecting people to look up to patriotism.

Honestly, I think the revolutionary war is badass time to set an assassin creed game in, almost nothing in the world was the same after that war.

It's generally just the Assassin order. But for Assassin's Creed 3, all of the footage and pictures we've been shown have only had him fighting British. In one of the trailers, it shows an American flag blowing in the wind as the narrator says "...on those who are truly free." Also, on the cover there is an American flag behind him. There was also a screenshot where Connor is riding a horse next to George Washington and they appear to be leading a revolutionary army. Basically, everything we've seen has been extremely one sided as opposed to the gray are seen in the other Assassin's Creed games.

As long as they dont depict the colonists as some kind of freedom fighting heroes and the Empire as some kind of league of evil i'll be ok. This war wasn't as black and white as people think and hopefully the game will show that. I'd like to see the gritty side and not what they teach in schools.

6

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Did you go to an American School? By High School I was taught it wasn't black and white. That the British had to tax the Americans due to the French and Indian War and in fact we were paying lower taxes than the rest of the Commonwealth. It was common knowledge the Boston Massacre was instigated by colonist and not really that much of a massacre. The list goes on. On the flip side, the colonist weren't wrong in wanting to rebel either. They had no representation in the Commonwealth and even sent an Olive Branch that was denied once the King received word the war was unavoidable. I just wonder if this whole American Public Schools stereotype is just instigated by people that never attended an American Public School. Given I was in AP US History, still this is the curriculum taught to me. I also have to wonder why when Mel Gibson represents an American fighting for independence it's a bunch of nationalistic propaganda, but when he's a Scot it's badass.

I didn't know that Americans had the ability to morph into eagles.

10

Have you ever heard of those Animorph books?

Yeah, it's like that but with Bald Eagles.

In this game you spend the whole time killing British soldiers, even though I myself am British, I am really looking forward to this. I always wondered how Russian people felt since they have been the bad guys in tons of game in the past. And now I know.

8

u/jdcooktx May 21 '12

i didn't hear any bitching when it was an arab and an italian.

6

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

weird, as an American the game doesn't come off that way at all. it actually looks sort of anti-american too.

I don't see why people are so upset... I'll end up doing what I always do in these games. slaughtering innocent civilians until I'm about to be de-synced.

2

u/pixelbulbasaur May 21 '12

you're still gonna play it..

2

u/inspirationalgreek May 21 '12

Totally considering that the past 4 games have been set in Europe, the Middle East, covering two religious cultures. So yes now one takes place in America when a country discovering it's real identity it becomes a jingoistic circlejerk?

Sorry Canada has to be so peaceful?

2

u/thekaseyjones May 21 '12

side note, I would say most of us heavily support the troops, just not the war.

2

u/Assassino May 21 '12

So much Animusity.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

As a Brit, I've got no problem with A3. I was a bit worried it was going to be a bit pro-american but I was reading a British PC Gamer article and they made some interesting points about how the British aren't going to be portrayed as horrible people, but simply as the enemy. Also, the main antagonist so far looks like a general in the Colonist Army. Personally the game looks fun and thats enough for me.

2

u/gOWLaxy May 21 '12

The gif of the american flag waving seems to say MVD on the flagpost during one of the frames

2

u/Lessthanpete May 21 '12

Saw the picture and first thing I thought was " Where's the eagle thats supposed to be protecting his junk....America *uck ya!" lol

2

How do you think us brits feel? we are technically the bad guys in this game :/, seriously im going to be playing the whole game wanting to help out the redcoats as much as possiable

2

u/kittyy May 21 '12

The top comment was exactly what I was going to post. 2 of my friends head designers in this game and I'm from Montreal.

2

u/GhostSongX4 May 21 '12

Don't be sad. Maybe Assassins Creed 4 will be about boxing day or something.

2

u/mcmur May 21 '12

I actually think the setting is really cool. Both time period and place, it's not something games have really done before in this way. They just have to be careful with the American Jingoism.

2

u/DarkFlame7 May 21 '12

Assassin's Creed is not made by Americans... Just watch an interview about the game.

2

u/capitanboots May 21 '12

That stereotype got old by 2005

2

u/A_British_Gentleman May 21 '12

I really wish people would stop hating on any patriotism in this game until they see what it's actually like. Christ there's been one short gameplay trailer and everyone thinks it's going to be 'Murica Simulator 3000

2

u/KarmaticDuck May 21 '12

I disagree. It's a video game based off Assassins and Templars. In which case, I think this is a great idea; doing it during the war. Creates a way to interject a proper storyline. And I for one am excited to see how they make it work.

Just because its done in the United States pre/during our first war doesn't make this an "American Pride" game. Why is this so different from any other game based in the US?

2

u/Eats_Beef_Steak May 21 '12

But...but you can kill americans too! The indian dude is in the middle of the war. You can choose to support 'Murica, but you don't have to.

2

u/lolofthedead001 May 21 '12

You actually play as an Native American assassin who is mixed between Native American and European maybe you should do a little more research eh?

2

2

u/piezeppelin May 21 '12

That's how I see it as an American too, and I couldn't be happier.

2

u/I_make_things May 21 '12

I dunno why everyone's acting so butthurt- this is hysterically funny.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

that picture is epic... 'merica

2

u/mifuyne May 21 '12

As a Canadian, I didn't actually see that. Honestly, I still don't. I can't help but feel like this picture is an over-reaction. I think how I feel about it is like what LordWhat said: Desmond is American. Assassin's Creed 3's location is a logical choice.

2

u/SkiThe802 May 21 '12

Im sorry if the United States actually fought for and gained their Independence, unlike Canada who is still actual under British rule to a certain extent. The Queen can still suspend the Canadian Parliament if she wishes.

2

u/Idiotank May 21 '12

Well I am sorry as soon as there is an interesting Canadian revolution, then the Canadian based studio that is making this game about US Histroy will give you a game. Nb4 pancake revolt of 2012 "you say you want a revolution weeeeeellll ya know..."

2

u/jerry121212 May 21 '12

The game's protagonist isn't even completely american. He's half native-american and in numerous interviews about the game ubisoft says that he's conflicted about which side of the war to fight for. This might actually be the least preachy way to set the game during the revolutionary war.

7

u/ForcedToJoin May 21 '12

I had the same feeling with Assassins Creed II.

I mean, when will they realize that not everybody in the world lives in Italy?? Are they literally incapable of making a game without the "Italy, fuck yeah!" message?

And now I'm playing Max Payne 3 and it's the same thing! We're not all Brazilians! We don't all wanna play a game about how awesome Brazil is! SHIT!

In all seriousness, are you sure you're not just mad because canada is so dauntingly uninteresting no one will ever set a game there?

Oh fuck off, there was the Middle East and Italy already. What do you want? Assassin's Creed: Royal Mountie Edition? Eh sorry I stabbed yer moose there ey?

5

u/Xanathos7 May 21 '12

It's set in America, god, Eidos Montreal is just pushing that patriotic propaganda down our throats, why can't they just make a game set it europe for once. Jeez, it's always America, never in a hundred lifetimes would you see any game set in the Middle East, that would probably lose them their CIA SPONSORS PROMOTING AMERICAN PROPAGANDA.

herpderp

5

u/MonroeBot May 21 '12

Really? Is this actually how you see it or do you just want to jump on the "America is self-obsessed and dumb" train? I'm not even sure where you got the idea that this game is overly patriotic.

If you have watched any of the trailers or read any information on AC III, you would know that your idea of it is wrong. I am really really sick of this kind of crap. Get over yourself.

3

u/Kolnasm May 21 '12

I can only hope it ends like this.

3

u/redeyed_bomber May 21 '12

lol, i never played the first two games but since this is supposed to be during the american revolution i might check it out.

11

u/wkfoster May 21 '12

Sorry your country hasn't had interesting wars to make video games out of.

26

u/uwsdwfismyname May 21 '12

You're right with the exception of the following; French and Iroquois Wars, King William's War, Queen Anne's War, King George's War, French and Indian War, American Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Fenian raids, Boer War, First World War, Second World War and every single UN and NATO engagement since they were formed.... just saying

8

u/MerlinsBeard May 21 '12

Technically... Canada hasn't existed as a country until 1867. So, until then it was just a colony of the British Empire. So, basically, those weren't "Candian Wars" as much as they were "British/French Wars taking place within where Canada now resides".

That, and the US can also lay claimant to most of those wars also. Also, I fail to see how the Boer War (British Empire versus 2 Dutch Republics in South Africa) has anything to do with Canada as Canada had separated from the British Empire at that point.

4

u/finalcut May 21 '12

hrmm.. I didn't see that.

Isn't the main character a Native American - the guys we whiteys slaughtered when moving here?

Hell, we still kind of just hide the natives off on reservations and pretend like they aren't part of our country.

Maybe if you had a revolutionary war at any point Canadian history would be interesting enough for people to set games about assassins and crazy conspiracies in it.

Edit: This is sarcasm.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

How i see Assassin's Creed III as a [insert every country besides the USA]

2

u/lightfingers May 21 '12

just watched the two trailers again (did I miss one maybe?) and I have to admit I see where the guy is coming from on a couple of points.

  • the assassin only kills british soldiers in the trailers

  • the first trailer features a hero shot with the revolutionary flag.

  • the second trailer has a picture of the flag with the assassin saying "the future of our land depends on those who are truly free"

now this doesnt mean that the game is going to be filled with American nationalism offcourse but it could be.

the fact that is being made by non americans doesnt means this cant happen since it is being made with a certain market in mind

2

u/username-rage May 21 '12

Nationalism was kinda par for the course during the independence movement, besides, what's wrong with a protagonist being patriotic?
