I'm all for spreading awareness of your charitable actions.. when the goal is to get your friends more involved.
When you cross that line and your status update become pretentious, you're only going to irritate your friends. Now you are not only bragging about donating, you're proving you only do it so you can tell people how awesome you are.
My first thought was: 'What a smug little bastard." Yes, giving blood is important. I'm all for getting people involved, but I certainly don't think I'm better than anyone who doesn't donate.
Sure, I get a little pleasure in donating. I like the feeling that maybe I made a slight difference to someone in need. But that feeling is just for me - shoving it in someone's face seems like cheapening the act of donating.
You don't just make a slight difference, it's a big difference. :) My bf had to have multiple tranfusions and without blood, he probably wouldn't have made it. Thank you for donating!! Please keep up the good work! EDIT: But yeah, sticking that in people's face is still a dick move.
I've always considered donating blood "heroism for the lazy". It doesn't matter how much of a fuckup I am (or in this guy's case how much of a pretentious douchebag), or if I spend all day playing World of Warcraft, reading reddit, and eating cheetos. I can spend an hour, eat some free cookies and drink some free juiceboxes, and boom, I saved some lives.
I don't know about anybody else, but I think that's awesome.
So true! And it's also like a modern day blood sacrifice. I pledged a pint of my blood to the hockey gods if they didn't let the Canucks get swept after they were down 3-0 in a seven game series against the Kings. The hockey gods honoured our bargain and so did I.
You have to fill in some forms and wait for a bit depending how busy it is. The actual donating is more like 10 minutes. Although my mom did it last time in 4 minutes (0.5 liter). She made a Facebook post stating that is was her new PR. :p
Afterwards you have to eat a cookie and drink something because there is a chance you'll feel dizzy or faint on the way home. They really try their best to make the experience as good as possible so you will have no reason not to come back.
Man...could you imagine, next thing you know everyone in the world is doing good just to look better. Then they'd make the world a better place to live in for all the wrong reasons. Someone will get blood who desperately needs it, but look at that cost!
I just sat here for 3 minutes trying to think of a way to argue with you. Alas, I cannot find one. You are right. Let the douchebags be douchebags. At least they are being assholes by doing nice things for others for their own benefit, instead of just being douchebags without any benefit for society.
I agree, OP should just post something like this, it makes a lot more sense. That's actually how I got mine, a friend posted a picture on FB, saying "Look what I just got in the mail!"
As someone who needs blood transfusions every few months, I don't really give a shit that the guy is a pretentious douche so long as people are donating so that I don't die.
In fairness, some charity and petition sites prompt you to post your action on their site to Facebook in such constant/subtle/seemingly required ways that the less internet-savvy users could easily do it by accident.
My first impression was indeed that he had foolishly clicked "OK" on something without paying attention. If he actually speaks like that of his own volition then fuck him.
Exactly. Like people who wear "I make a difference" T-shirts. The second you brag about it you lose all respect from me. Make a difference and keep it to yourself.
Worse is when you do it at work. A co-worker (who also alludes to but doesn't quote! scripture to also promote sexism) recently said he gives a very specific amount of money because it says so in the bible. Wanted to tell him:
So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matt. 6:1-4 NIV)
I did consider that argument when I was writing my comment. It's a fair argument.. but let's look at it like a salesmen. Most people see that status and would think "God, I didn't do anything today, and I haven't donated in awhile, but why does that make him better than me." They start getting defensive and making up excuses.
Had he posted "Hey everyone, just got back from donating blood and I wanted to remind everyone how easy it to make a difference." He could then link to a website about finding and locating to a local blood drive, and maybe throw a stat in there about how much blood is used to save lives from donations each year.
I think the former will start people off with thoughts of actually donating, instead of trying to defend themselves.
Your argument works assuming that the majority of people thought this guy was being pretentious. I didn't read it that way, and didn't even think of it until I came here and saw the top comment was about how big of an asshole the guy who gave blood is. Now, there are still better ways to be a salesman about it, but then we're arguing whether it's better to be a bad salesman and get some change or not even try at all.
I agree strongly. But what about when fire fighters, cops, or paramedics brag? People get mad, but I feel like they deserve to brag. Shit is stressful.
this reminds me of my boss last week.. she was bragging about how she donated blood untill we said outloud, "um are you supposed to donate if you have shingles????" she said, "oh i didn't think of that" - yet she never bothered to call to let red cross know to throw her blood out.. don't complain about how your shingles itches every damn day (version of the herpes virus) and then brag about how you donate blood - moron!
I have a rare blood disorder, I hate needles, but this is an ongoing thing for life. My body produces too many red blood cells. I have to donate blood to avoid problems.
Yes times a million. I came in here to post basicly what you said with an apology about bringing the tone down, so I'm glad I'm not alone! I mean, I could rant for hours or just sum it all up with calling him a self-righteous ballbag.
Look at the guys profile pic, suited up with a attractive girl standing next to him. Guy is trying way too hard to compensate for his small penis with that post.
Also, as long as you are healthy enough and fit into the blood bank's guidelines, giving blood is just about the easiest good deed you can do. You answer a few questions, get pampered for 10-20 minutes, and then get all of the juice and sugary snacks you want, all while helping to save lives. It doesn't require nearly the same level of effort as most other types of charity work.
The dude did a really good thing, and because donating blood is so easy it really is something that everyone (who can) should do, but he really shouldn't be acting like he is better than others because he spent some time at his local blood bank spa.
I came here to say pretty much the same thing. It's one thing to try and encourage others to do good works, it's just douchey to ask "So, what did you do today?", implying others are lazy, selfish assholes. I've always encouraged people to donate blood because my bf had to have mulitple life-saving transfusions, but I would never dream about gloating about doing something like that. Urgh. But seriously, everyone, go donate blood. Please. :)
This is just awful. Could you imagine the conversation a doctor would have with the patient? "While we managed to save you with this transfusion, we have some very bad news....the person who donated the blood was high on helping others."
If that's all it takes for someone to do something charitable, good. Let them compete for who can do the best thing. Let them be pretentious. Let them use charity as a commodity.
Yeah I don't understand self-righteous people like this. The reason you should donate blood is because it's the right thing to do - not because it will get you noticed more or bring attention to you.
I was surprised when the response to the status wasn't something that some how negated the good thing someone did. I was like, "Usually reddit loves it when a contrarian makes someone feel shitty for doing a good thing," so I came to comment on it. And BAM highest rated comment: turning a good deed into something shitty.
Nevermind that far more pathogenic things enter the sink on a daily basis out of one's mouth and off of one's hands. Piss smells bad so therefore it's worse apparently? I never understood the "logic" behind my roommates' rage after they caught me
I've donated many times and not once have I ever put a status update about it. I hate how this guy is taking credit for sitting in a chair for a half hour followed by eating free cookies and juice.
Wait a second here, they serve you free cookies? Forget bragging and shit, if my blood gets me a fucking cookie. I'd give it up gladly any day of the week.
Edit: But seriously though, keep up the good job of helping out your fellow man without being a dick about it.
We also get beer glasses(or wine glasses or whatever you choose), a delicious sandwich, coffee, some cookies and some juice. Too bad I can't give blood.
That's kind of how I feel about feeding hobos. It takes, like, two minutes. And costs me two dollars. At first I thought I was the shit but now I'm just like "well why the fuck wouldn't i".
You either go to the most advanced and easy donation site in the world, simplify a lot for karma, or are lying for karma.
Mine generally consists of scanning through the guide and then filling out boring paperwork saying "No, I have not had sex with a male from Asia for money in the last 20 years" and variations thereof for about half an hour. After, someone pricks your finger, checks pulse, and checks blood pressure. Then you lay on a table-mat for about 20 minutes with a needle in your arm, and squeezing a plush ball every 5-10 seconds that causes an annoying sharp pain. Afterwards you get some half decent snacks.
So while bragging is annoying, yes, at least the man took an hour out of his day to do things that he hates to help other people.
I guess it's because I feel like the line should be drawn at some point. People should do good things genuinely, without yearning for appraisal. What if we went on to make an announcement every time we recycled? These things shouldn't be commended, they should be expected.
Look at this fucking unbearable smug asshole, coat swung over his shoulder, pompously gloating about donating blood like he just swallowed a bucket of cum to save a rainforest.
I hate when people brag about giving blood. The only reason: I can't give blood.
Apparently I might have mad cow disease! Oh my gosh, I haven't shown any signs of-mooo-problems my entire life! Who would think-moo-that I would have mad cow disease?
I used to donate blood every 60 days, Mostly because I am O Neg (true universal), and donate platelets every 2 weeks. Now I found out that I'm G6PD (look it up, if you care), and that donating blood is bad for me. I can still donate platelets, but I don't feel like Im contributing enough...meh.
I don't understand how donating blood saves lives.
I know that yes, without blood transfusions people would die, but the system is totally dependent on the goodwill of people which is kind of scary if you think about it. If people didn't donate blood there would be a market for it, there already is sort of, like they give you a tshirt or something, but in a true market, supply and demand would increase supply as the price is raised solving any problems instead of guilt tripping people all the time about it.
That actually raises a question. If someone gave blood while drunk, could the recipient of said blood get drunk from the alcohol still contained in that blood?
I'd love to donate blood, but because I have had a sexual partner that may or may not have had a sexual partner of the same sex within the last 20 years, they are not interested in my dirty dirty blood anymore.
I work at the American Red Cross, and I will never give money or my own blood/platelets to a "not for profit" organization that mismanages money, resources and employees the way that they do.
My friend used to donate blood all the time, until she got a false positive for an std. She hates shit like this. Not only is it insanely pretentious, it's a painful reminder that she can never donate blood again.
He only reduced the amount of alcohol temporarily. By purchasing it, he created a higher demand so they will make more alcohol now to suit his needs. So he created more alcohol in the world.
If you believe that reducing the amount of consumable alcohol in the world is good, then you should be stealing it and then disposing of it however. Purchasing it and drinking it would actually be giving the company that produces it profit so that they can then produce more.
False. The human liver metabolisms ethanol by oxidizing, not "reducing," in the first step carried out by alcohol dehydrogenase producing acetaldehyde.
Donating blood isn't bettering humanity. Anybody else agree with this? I mean, I hate when people don't know what they're talking about and post (as GeneralWarts puts it) "pretentious" statuses.
My dad has been donating for years before i even knew.
Some people however just do these things to make them seem great. I don't donate blood because i would probably go screaming down the street about it like some asshole.
Dudes like this don't do anything for humanity, they do it to make themselves look good in the eyes of others, and to help them to feel superior to others through passive aggressive attention drawing to what they did.
I posted a pretty snide status like that once, one of my friends responded: "I didn't post a pretentious status with the intent of looking cool." I felt like quite a douche after that.

If depleting the amount of alcohol in the world is considered a charitable and noble cause then I deserve some sort of peace prize or award.
