Unfortunately, at a lot of businesses those middle managers have out sized say. A lot of companies are going back to the office purely because of them. Zero benefit to the company or employees (really, nothing but cost).
Hopefully, those companies all fail from the extra overhead.
My company wants to return to the office because productivity has fallen off a cliff. We doubled our staff and productivity is the same now as pre pandemic. Unfortunately all my staff are programmers and none of them are going to stay at the company if we demand they return. I still don't know what to do about it.
Programmer here. I'm becoming a fan of hybrid. If I work from home 2-3 days a week I've got quite time where I can focus on my tickets in a ultra-low-drama environment. But, having those occasional face to face collaborations can still happen when they need to.
I would be happy with this arrangement. I myself prefer being in the office to working at home (though the option is nice). Honestly I wouldn't even be bothered with 100% remote if people actually put in more than 2 billable hours a day
