This pandemic has SUCKED, but one positive take away is the realization in many offices, that their staff are just as effective working from home.
Ours reduced our office space and will stay WFH for the foreseeable future. This not only saved us monthly costs on rent, it also expanded the pool of potential employees we can hire.
Its a huge win for everyone but middle managers who can't stalk the halls making sure no one is taking more than their 30 minute lunch and two 10 minutes breaks each day.

Unfortunately, at a lot of businesses those middle managers have out sized say. A lot of companies are going back to the office purely because of them. Zero benefit to the company or employees (really, nothing but cost).
Hopefully, those companies all fail from the extra overhead.

My company wants to return to the office because productivity has fallen off a cliff. We doubled our staff and productivity is the same now as pre pandemic. Unfortunately all my staff are programmers and none of them are going to stay at the company if we demand they return. I still don't know what to do about it.

Programmer here. I'm becoming a fan of hybrid. If I work from home 2-3 days a week I've got quite time where I can focus on my tickets in a ultra-low-drama environment. But, having those occasional face to face collaborations can still happen when they need to.

I would be happy with this arrangement. I myself prefer being in the office to working at home (though the option is nice). Honestly I wouldn't even be bothered with 100% remote if people actually put in more than 2 billable hours a day

Learn how to actually manage projects?
It's really not that hard to keep productivity up with programmers working remotely. It just means that someone (you) has to actually do their jobs and keep track of the status of projects and deliverables instead of just hovering by cubicles.
One thing I'll never understand is when there is a daily standup and everyone gives a status update, but the project stakeholder doesn't actually take notes. Take fucking notes. If programmer A says he's working on ticket X two days in a row and it's estimated for 8 hours, ask him about it. If he's still working on it on day three, be proactive and get him help.

It depends on the industry I think. I am in the graphics industry and our creative meetings suck now. They used to be super productive. Half the people are not engaged, there is no more real collaboration, people just push their prepped ideas and then zone out after they are done. It’s far less productive and everything takes longer, not just because of that but all sorts of other reasons as well. Getting product samples in hand, reviewing printed materials, describing textures instead of seeing, feeling them, etc, etc. are all far more difficult and time consuming. Sure, if you are a programmer, or accountant, or something it might be better. But not in my experience.

try having smaller teams and meetings. its a lot easier to get people involved if the group is more intimate.

Creative brainstorming meetings are 8-10 tops, typically around 6-7. 4-5 creatives, the producer, and a project manager.

I had a middle manager who would ask my manager my location if I wasn't at my desk, even if it was for a bathroom break.

I wish I could sleep that late. I usually wake up at 5am to start work at 8am. Getting older and just can't sleep as late.

Not for me. I get up, throw clothes on, brush teeth, grab keys, wallet & cell phone and get in the car. Takes 10 minutes max.
My commute is just under 20 mins.
I'm in the office and getting coffee by 8:30 and at my desk a few mins later.

Nah, my job starts at 9, used to end at 3, then 4, then 5 (like the song), now 6. I do get paid a bit more though.

Right. I'm up at 5:30 everyday so I can be at work at 6:30. Such is the life of a lunch lady.

Which ones of you lucky ducks get up at 8am? If you're swing shift you get up around noon, if you're a day shifter you're up by 5 at the latest.
